Lucas Pov

I watched the Gala on the screen and noticed she seemed different. It wasn’t just the wealth; there was something else about her. Elena had left just three years ago, completely broken, but the woman I saw wasn’t the wife I divorced. How had she managed to build so much wealth in just three years? I had been too hurt and devastated to think straight. I had questioned my decision to let her go over and over again. I felt I had been too harsh, but the reality of the DNA result staring at me stopped me from excusing her and running after my wife as she left the house that day, completely devastated. I had been conflicted, and my heart ached when my family humiliated her, but she caused it. She betrayed me. She betrayed our love. There was no way the DNA result was a mistake. It came from one of the best labs in the city.

Since she left three years ago, my life has not been the same. Mia and Max were already a part of me, and it hurt to let them go. But I had to move on. She was the one who betrayed me—at least, that’s what I told myself anytime her memory crossed my mind.

“She probably slept her way up the ladder of success…” Sabrina’s voice cut through my thoughts from behind me.

“Once a slut, always a slut,” Isabella added, her tone biting.

I turned and saw my sister and Sabrina, who was now my PA. They had become incredibly close—maybe too close. I didn’t respond. I remained quiet. Mother came in after them. They were like three musketeers..They did everything together. They were leaving for Paris in the next two hours, a girls' trip according to them. The trip was fully funded by my mother.

“How are you, Lucas?” she asked, giving me a quick peck on the cheek. Her gaze fell on the television, and she took the remote, turning it off without asking for my permission. “I can’t believe you’re watching that betrayer. Her wealth reeks of harlotry.”

“I came here to discuss important matters…” she continued, gently pulling me to sit on the sofa. “We’ll be in the other room,” Isabella noted. It felt like they all knew what the discussion was about, but I remained silent and waited for Mother to speak.

“It’s been over three years, Lucas. You need a woman in your life. I know she hurt you… It must have been very devastating, but it’s about time you get a wife.”

It was exactly what I had anticipated. My jaw clenched, my muscles tight.

“Mother… I will get a wife when I am ready.”

“When will that be, Lucas? Is it going to be when you’re old and gray? Don’t you know the presence of children solidifies your position in the Sterling Empire? Your uncles have been eyeing your position since your father died… Lucas…”

“Mother… I will find a woman when the time is right…”

“You’re surrounded by enough women, Lucas… you can just pick one.” She pressed, her tone insinuating.

“Mother… being surrounded by women is different from being surrounded by the right women.”

“Oh, come off it, son. I’m tired of beating around the bush. What about Sabrina? She’s been good to you… If not for—”

“Mother... She is Elena’s sister.”

“Half-sister.”

“It doesn’t change anything, Mother. They are still sisters.”

“If not for her, you would have still been stuck with that liar… She saved you from—”

“And I am grateful. You asked me to make her my PA. I accepted out of courtesy for you. You made me sack my loyal PA… Isn’t that enough?” I said, trying to keep my anger at bay.

“Son… she will make a good wife…”

“You don’t get to determine who will make a good wife for me, Mother. I know how to pick.”

“Well, you picked Elena, and she betrayed you. You’re not exactly good at making—”

“Mother…” I shouted.

“Don’t tell me you’re still in love with her…”

“That’s not your business. When you’re done, you know how to find your way out. Your flight to Paris leaves in two hours,” I muttered, getting up.

Fighting my raging emotions, I hurried out of the living room, with no specific destination in mind. I got into my car and zoomed off. My phone beeped, and I picked it up. It was a message from an unknown number.

(“Elena didn’t cheat on you… It was all a lie. Max and Mia belong to you.”)

I slammed the brakes on my car, and it came to a complete halt. The impact jarred me back against my seat, but I didn’t care. I stared at the message, completely confused.

My head hurt from the impact, but I ignored it. Was this some prank to mess with my emotions?

(“Meet me at Sag’s cafe in one hour. I have all the details…”)

My heart pounding, I pressed the pedal. My speed was dangerous, but I didn’t mind. I sat at Sag’s restaurant, patiently gazing at the door. A man with a dark face cap walked toward me. My defenses were suddenly up. What if this was a setup?

“I am Jake…” he said as soon as he sat down.

“What do you want?” I asked, looking at him suspiciously.

He threw a brown envelope in front of me. “Elena never cheated on you. It was a set up…”

I opened the envelope immediately. Inside were photos, emails, and another DNA result.

The photos showed Sabrina meeting with the same doctor I had gone to see at a cafe. The emails revealed the back-and-forth between Sabrina and the doctor.

Lastly, there was the real DNA result. It was indicated in bold letters.

“This can’t be true…” I whispered, my voice shaking.

“It is…”

“No…oh no!!!…”

He brought out his phone and played a recording. It was Sabrina's voice. She was thanking the doctor for a job well done, and they both laughed, saying dirty words to each other. She told him how she couldn’t wait to see the shock on my face and Elena’s humiliation. The next sounds were kisses and moaning. They were in a room.

“Why are you showing me all this now… after three years?”

“Because it’s the right thing to do…”

“Who are you, Jake? How did you find all this?”

“I’m a journalist who sees all and knows all…”

I nodded. I was numb. Jake walked out, but I didn’t move. I couldn’t. I clenched the brown envelope tightly, and memories flooded back. Her humiliation, the backlash from the press, from my family.

My harsh words. I had called my own children bastards. I had hurt the woman I love. Elena wasn’t the one who broke the promise. I was. The painful reality almost knocked me out.

Furious, I dialed Sabrina’s number, but there was no response. She had probably boarded. Everything made sense now—her sudden closeness to my family, her niceness. I felt stupid. I should have known.

I should have repeated the test, as Elena had requested, but I was too blinded by rage. My dear wife. My Elena. Desperate, I went to her website to book an appointment with a different name. I needed to see her, to plead for her forgiveness, to see my twins.

Lucas's POV"What do you mean she sent you out of her house?" I said, standing up from my bed.Why would Elena hire men when Robert is more than capable?“She recruited men from Toplik security. They’re good. I can’t set up surveillance on her anymore, or I’ll be discovered. Toplik trains the best," Robert said, his voice strained.“You should have insisted, Robert,” I said, running my hands through my hair and letting out a frustrated sigh.“I did, but she was adamant. I’m worried about the kids too.”“How about you speak to the head of her security? See if he’ll let you monitor them from a distance?”“He wouldn’t allow it. Toplik security is strict with their operations. They won’t let an outsider near them.”I fell quiet for a moment. Protecting her and the kids was one thing, but I also wanted Elena back under my roof. I wanted to reignite the flames between us. It was selfish, but I had to take my shot.“Did you check out the worker who picked up the package from someone…?”“Yes,

Elena's POV"I've been waiting forever," I said into the phone, trying hard to keep my anger in check."We're sorry, ma'am. We needed to ensure we sent men suited for your situation. Also, one of our best men, Ardon, had escorted a dignitary to France and just returned two days ago. Apart from the others, he is also the man for the job. He’s leading the team.""Fine. My assistant told me they're on their way." I pulled Mia to my side. She kept looking around in fear, and I hated that."Yes, they should be there any minute now.""Alright. Send me an invoice and any other information I need to know.""It's been forwarded to your official email.""Can they start working right away?" I asked, looking up to see Robert standing in the doorway of my bedroom. Sighing, I got up, my eyes blazing with anger."Right away, ma'am. They are officially your bodyguards now until you no longer need them.""Thank you," I muttered and ended the call."Ma’am, we need to move you away from—" Robert started

"What the hell are you doing in my house? How do you know my address? How do you know when the men came into my house?" I said, glaring at Robert. I wouldn’t deny the fact that I was relieved; if they hadn't stepped in, my kids could have been hurt. Though Claire claimed one of the armed men was in my bedroom looking for something, while the other one held the nanny—who had my kids in her arms—at gunpoint. What could they be searching for? I wasn’t sure. But then she had stumbled upon them when she got into my house, ran, and hid in the closet of the guest room. That was when she called me.Hearts pounding, I had called Lucas, and he had the audacity to make a joke out of the whole situation."Ma'am..." Robert started."Now I’m 'ma’am'? What happened to Elena? I’m suddenly ‘ma’am’?" I said, throwing my hands in the air and shaking my head simultaneously.I saw the strain on his face. He had refused to let me enter Lucas’s mansion three years ago. He had stripped me of the respect he o

Lucas’s POVAs soon as Elena hung up on me, I exhaled, trying not to get upset. I had hurt her, and I had to endure whatever she threw at me in the process of trying to win her back.“Lucas, your chicken broth will get cold. You should eat it…” Mother said from behind me. I turned and walked to the dining area, exhaling softly due to the sharp jabs of pain I was feeling at my side. My mansion had been unusually quiet since I sent Sabrina packing. She had insisted it was a lie, but the evidence I had was more than enough proof. Since she left, my mother and sister had been extra cautious around me, and scared because of the attack I had at the hospital. As soon as the doctor arrived that day, they gave me IV medication to reverse the paralysis, but none of it worked until about an hour later, just like the woman had said.Who was she?!The police had searched the entire perimeter of the hospital, but it was like she vanished into thin air. The two bodyguards assigned to the entrance o

Elena’s POVA week had passed since I was discharged from the hospital, and everything still seemed vague. At different times, police officers visited my house, but there was no tangible information. I had to work from home, and some of my clients had to have their consultations with me via video conference. Victor had been calling to ensure I was fine, and despite my refusal, one of his bodyguards was sent to my house because the agency I reached out to was dragging their feet.I was overwhelmed, and I jumped at every sound at night. My beautiful life was suddenly exchanged with uncertainty. Still, I tried to remain positive. The police would get to the root of the matter. I kept telling myself over and over.It was time for my check-up, and I needed to visit the hospital. My driver drove me in my car while a police car trailed behind me. All the way to the doctor’s office, I refused to think about Lucas—or his touch! Especially his touch! One week, yet the memory of his hand around

  • THE BILLIONAIRE'S FIGHT TO WIN HER BACK   Chapter Twenty One

Lucas's POVWhen I entered my hospital room, my phone rang. Steadying my breath, I picked up. It was Robert. We’d already spoken earlier that day, so when his call came through, I knew something important had happened."What's the latest development?" I asked, lying down on the bed. I rubbed my temple, trying to ease the headache that was gnawing at me."The attacker has been caught by the police, but he poisoned himself before they could get any useful information out of him.""What?!" I sat up, panic flooding through me. This was no ordinary attack. Anyone willing to go as far as covering their tracks with murder wasn't just an average person."Yes, but just before the police picked him up, he met with a man on the outskirts of the city. We’ve been tracking this man. So far, his activities seem normal, but we’re not sure if he’s connected to the attempt on Elena’s life. He’s our closest link, though.""Are the police aware of this?""No, they aren’t. He was arrested only minutes aft
