LOGIN“What do you mean by you will be going away?” Darren, Elizabeth’s brother inquired as he watched her type away on her laptop.
He could hardly understand why he had to be the one to take care of their mother at such young age, no offense or insult intended but he had his own life ahead of him and he could hardly imagine himself being bound by his ailing mother. To him he felt it was his sister’s job to take care of her and ever since their father had died some years ago, she had been doing that just fine without his help.
“I need to go work to get money for her treatment, Darren. You just have to be with her for some months and I will be back. This is really important to me and it is literally the only thing that can get us out of this level.”“What kind of job is it? You know I am playing for the local football club and I just recently got selected to represent at the international level. I cannot botch this, coupled with the fact that I have school and a life.”“Who do you think is working so hard so you could have this life you have always wanted? Do not mess with me, Darren. What is more important to you, mother’s life or your football career.”The look on her brother’s face was enough to tell her that he had chosen the latter without hesitation.Elizabeth sighed, closing her laptop
“I’m so sorry that I am springing this up on you but I had no idea this job would even come through, I merely applied because there was literally nothing to do and now I have to go because I have been chosen.”“You still haven’t told me what sort of job it is, what job has you going away for months without contacting your family or coming to see them.” Darren asked, folding his arms.“I cannot speak of it because I signed a non disclosure agreement but I promise it is nothing horrible, the person involved just thinks it is better I do not make any contact until I am done with it. Please Darren, try to understand me. I would ask Mara to check up once in a while and before you know it, I will be back.”“Yeah, whatever. I have practice right now so I will be leaving, see you.”Elizabeth watched him go and sighed again, this was not what she had expected when she had applied to be a surrogate for Jason, she had thought she would be allowed free access to her family and every other thing but it seemed that would hardly be possible.Elizabeth’s eyes went round her house and over to where she had dropped the card he had given her yesterday, it was his personal line and she was to call him by 7:00 pm today. She wondered what this was all about, her stomach knotting in anticipation.I find you utterly intriguingHis own words, not hers and still she could not stop thinking about how that had made her feel, the pounding of her heart as he smiled at her and the way she had been lost for words. This wasn’t supposed to be happening and not at the time, it was merely a job and she was going to get it over with. Even as she said this, she still could not stop thinking about that smile, he looked less like an asshole with that smile.Elizabeth waited till it was 7:30 before picking up her phone and giving him a call, her hands jittery.“You are late” he stated simply immediately she identified herself.“Yes I was just contemplating whether it would be wise to call on you at the exact time you gave me.”“I gave you that time for a reason, Elizabeth.”“Yeah sorry” she muttered and then wondered why she had apologized.“It’s alright; now according to the form you filled, you have a mother and a brother? How does your mother feel about the whole surrogacy contract.”“I did not inform her that I am going to be a surrogate.”“How old are you, Elizabeth and I do not mean the age you put in the contract, I want your real age.”“I am twenty four, why do you ask?”“What is a graduate of business administration doing working at a convenience store.”“What business of it is yours? Is this an interrogation?”“No, it is an interview. I would like to get to know the person I am employing and if you feel uncomfortable answering the questions, I could simply employ the help of a private investigator.”“That won’t be necessary.” Elizabeth retorted. She did not want to answer any questions this man had to ask but at the same time, she did not want him formally aware of her mother’s illness.“Why did you decide to be a surrogate for me?”“Isn’t that obvious, Mr Rodrigues. I want the money and also the five years extra on top of it.”“ I did not peg you for someone who had much interest in money but I might be wrong.”Elizabeth was quiet for a while before clearing her throat“You are absolutely wrong, now if you are done interrogating me, I would like to call it a day.”“Come tomorrow to my office and we will finalize our deal… and please for God sake, wear something less beggarly or you are going to be appearing on the six o clock news.”Elizabeth was still trying to form a rude retort before she heard the line click, he had hung up.The arrogant prick, she fumed but got up immediately to look for something presentable to wear, no need angering him before she actually had her foot in the door.Plenty of time later to tell him exactly how much of an overbearing asshole he was and by all means she was going to make sure he knew.
ISABELLA“Oh, you have got to be kidding me!”I stared in horror at the muddy water splattered all over my white pants. The car responsible was already halfway down the road.Of course.Of course this would happen today.I had spent twenty minutes deciding what to wear for this interview. Twenty whole minutes standing in front of my mirror debating whether the white pants looked professional enough. It is official. The world is conspiring against me. This is what I get for trying.I grabbed the packet of wet wipes from my bag and attempted to clean the stain. The dirt only smeared further.Wonderful.Absolutely wonderful.I checked the time on my phone and groaned. It did not matter now.I was already running late. There was no point standing around feeling sorry for myself.I shoved the wipes back into my bag and hurried toward the massive black gates looming ahead. The property behind them looked more like a private estate than a house.I pressed the buzzer.A crackling voice immedi
EPILOGUEDARREN“Who would have thought?”Camilla laughed as she adjusted the veil draped over her shoulder. The afternoon sun caught against the diamonds around her neck and for a second, she looked exactly like the little girl who used to follow me around in family gatherings asking impossible questions.Only now she was wearing a wedding dress and she was married."I know," Camilla said, shaking her head. "Trust me, I still can't believe it either."The reception buzzed around us.Music drifted through the air.People laughed and champagne glasses clinked.Nathan stood across the room speaking with Lucien while Jason danced with Elizabeth like they were the only two people in existence. Some things never changed."I am happy for you, Cami."Her smile softened."Thank you for everything. You actually pushed me to go after what I wanted.""That sounds unlike me."She laughed at this. “You know, Uncle… I know you have had the worst luck in women but I cannot wait for you to meet the on
CAMILLAThe drive to Nathan's place was silent,.My hands rested in my lap, fingers laced together, and I could feel my heart beating in my throat, in my wrists, between my thighs.Nathan drove with one hand on the steering wheel, the other reaching across to rest on my knee. His thumb traced lazy circles against the fabric of my dress, and every brush of his skin against mine sent a ripple of heat through my body.I watched his profile in the dim light of the dashboard. The sharp line of his jaw, the way his lips parted slightly when he breathed, the tension in his shoulders that I knew had nothing to do with the road.He pulled into a private driveway and killed the engine. For a moment, neither of us moved. Then he turned to me, and the look in his eyes made my breath catch."Are you sure?" he asked quietly.I reached out and placed my hand over his, still resting on my knee."I have never been more sure of anything in my life."He held my gaze for a long moment, searching my eyes f
NATHAN“And how pray tell did you find this cozy ice cream place at the end of the world?” Camilla’s eyebrow rose as we drove out of the city.“Well, I wanted to recreate our first date minus the racing of course, and Christian mentioned he knew someplace that he was sure you would absolutely love so I decided to check it out myself and he is right, you will love it.”I turned to her and she had a smile on her face.“What?” I asked.“You just said our first date.”“Well, yes to remind you while you think about forgiving me the reason you fell in love with me in the first place.”“I was not in love with you at the race.” she muttered indignantly but she was blushing furiously too.“Yes, you were. And you were grateful for me, remember?”Camilla rolled her eyes.“You and I seem to have a very different version of the same event.”“Let me see…” I pretended to think. “Nope, I think my version is very much accurate and it is okay if you do not want to admit it.”Camilla chuckled at this and
CAMILLA“Before you kill me…”My father’s voice greeted me the second I stepped into the living room.I paused in the doorway and narrowed my eyes at him.He sat comfortably on the sofa, one ankle resting on his knee, looking entirely too pleased with himself for a man who had conspired behind my back.“How did it go with Nathan?” he asked.“I cannot believe you would band together with Nathan Clark to manipulate me into speaking to him.”My father placed a hand over his chest in mock offense.“I cannot believe it either but here we are, little dove.”Despite myself, my lips twitched. He patted the empty spot beside him.“Besides,” he continued, “you were miserable and I wanted to do anything I could to cheer you up.”A reluctant smile tugged at my mouth as I crossed the room and collapsed onto the sofa beside him.“I can see you are cheered up,” he observed.I let out a dramatic sigh and flopped sideways, resting my head against the back cushion.“He explained everything and I told h
NATHANFor a man who had gone through the roughest arc of life and came out on top, I had never been more terrified than I was at the moment.Camilla kept her eyes on me, waiting, her fingers tapping away at the table.Sarah appeared with two steaming bowls of soup and a basket of bread. She placed them between us and looked from Camilla to me then she narrowed her eyes at me.“If she stabs you with the spoon, I saw nothing.”“Thank you, Sarah,” Camilla said sweetly.Sarah patted her shoulder.“You are welcome, sweetheart.”She cast me another glare before she walked away.I watched her leave before turning back to the woman who had completely ruined me for every other woman on the planet. Her expression was unreadable so I had no idea how to know what she was thinking.I took a deep breath.“I am sorry.”“That is your opening line?” Her eyebrow arched at this.“Yes and I mean it.”She picked up her spoon and stirred the soup absently.“You vanished for two weeks, ignored my calls and
Mara got no call from Lucien about the dress theme for the party they were supposed to go for and she only assumed he probably had forgotten to give her the text she had asked for, she sighed and picked up her phone to call him instead. Her meeting with Alexander Russo had gone well until he had ask
“You want it to be a marriage arrangement?” Mara squealed. She had agreed to sign a contract with Lucien to be his girlfriend not his wife and sitting across from him now, she could hardly believe her ears.“Just being my girlfriend will not be enough to satisfy the ravenous crowd seeking for news abo
Lucien smiled as Mara opened the door wider, allowing him in. He inhaled the flowery scent of her, allowing himself a moment to think about the last time they had seen; at his brother’s wedding where she had teased and called him a gigolo. He was over all that now but it did not stop the smile from
ELIZABETHI was deliciously aware of his presence, his calloused fingertips running through the insides of my thigh and his mouth kissing mine with reckless abandon. His name was the only thing on my lips and my back arced when his fingers connected with my core…“Elizabeth… Liza, wake up” I was rough
