Arthur’s POV

His number was saved on my contact with an initial that couldn’t raise suspicions if any busy nose scroll through my contacts.

R. Harlow.

It was neither his real name nor a nickname. It was a name I gave him myself. In over for decades of navigating complex old-money family affairs, I had learned that the most useful people in your life were the ones nobody knew about.

Raymond had started working for me long before Xavier was born.

If you ask me one thing I loved about him, it’s the fact that he’s so discreet and professional, only people who understood the cost of indiscretion could be as that. He’s a wide man who understands that information handled carelessly had a way of becoming a fire that could burn everyone, including the person who started it.

I called him on Sunday evening, after Aria had collected Bryan and the estate had moved back into its usual quietness.

I sat in my study with the ledger on the desk in front of me, the one Bryan had discovered in the east wing of the estate, I had the old photograph together beside it.

I had this particular heaviness of a man who already knew the answer to the question he was about to ask but needed it confirmed outside the walls of his own conviction.

Raymond answered almost immediately, as if he was waiting to get a call from me.

“Mr. Beaumont,” he called immediately he answered.

“I need background information on a birth,” I said, “discreet as usual, no mistakes that could leave a trail.”

“Of course,” he said. He asked no questions, he never do. That was a core professionalism trail about Raymond, he understood that the questions were mine to carry and how diligently the questions were answered was his.

I gave him all the full details to successfully execute the job. Aria Ashford’s name, Bryan’s name and date of birth, as close as I could estimate from what Aria had mentioned in one of the familiarity discussions over dinner, Bryan would be six in four months, which placed his birth approximately five years and eight months ago.

His hospital of birth and his father were both unknown, which I suspected meant the birth certificate carried Aria’s name alone.

“What exactly are we looking into?” Raymond asked.

“I need to know the precise birth date,” I replied. “And anything on record about the circumstances of the pregnancy.”

“Give me forty-eight hours,” Raymond said.

“I will be expecting you,” I replied and ended the call.

***

It was my phone ringtone that woke me up very early on Tuesday morning. Margaret had not even brought the breakfast tray.

I opened my eyes sluggishly and reached out for my phone on the drawer beside the bed. I had been expectant of the response from Raymond that sleep itself had not been cooperative.

“The boy’s full name is Bryan James Ashford,” Raymond said, immediately I pressed the answer button. “He was born on the March 14th, 2021 at Westbrook General Hospital. His birth was registered by Aria Ashford, his mother. The father’s section on the birth certificate was blank.”

“Hold on.”

I put on my glasses, fetched a journal and pen from the drawer and jot the date down.

“The fourteenth of March,” I repeated.

I stared at the date for a moment. “2021. That was obviously five years ago. Are you certain?”

“I’m hundred percent certain,” Raymond answered, “I pulled the information from legit sources in the hospital. It is confirmed.”

“Thank you. I will contact you if I need more of your service. The agent will wire you your balance.”

“Always at your service, sir.”

Then he ended the call.

The doubt that has lingered in my mind since the day I met Bryan returned with a lightning speed. Each of the what ifs sitting comfortably in my mind.

I stared at the journal again.

Five years ago on the fourteenth of March.

I opened my phone and navigate to calendar. I turned back to five years ago, my wrinkled hand tracing through the date with the patience of a man who already knew the answer to what he was searching for.

Then, I saw it.

That day. That was the exact day Xavier missed a dinner schedule at the estate, one I still believed till date that he did intentionally.

That night, his line was unreachable and I had no idea where he could have been. His personal assistant at the time… a nervous young man named Frederick whom I believed should be the vein closer to his neck, even said he was not aware of his movement.

Xavier, in thirty years of growing up under my watch, had never once been unreachable without a reason

Not until I showed him who the elderly one was. I feigned a medical crisis, and guess who ran down to the estate in less than an hour.

My beloved grandson, Xavier.

The look on his face when he opened the door to the private medical wing and saw me hale and hearty… oh my God, it still cracks me up.

He didn’t say much to me about where he was the night before or what happened, and I just let it slide. Afterall, he was not a kid to monitor, and he was not a lady for me to say maybe he may have met some bad boys and got raped. The most important thing was that he came back hale and hearty.

But now, thinking about it again, it feels like there’s more than meet the eyes.

Conception, working backwards from the birth date, put the relevant night approximately nine months prior — the middle of June, five years and nine months ago. The same week Xavier disappeared.

The week he had come back looking like a man who had made a decision.

I dropped my phone back on the drawer top.

Bryan’s personality suddenly starts replaying in my head, how inquisitive, kind, playful and sweet as he was. I had seen that personality once in my lifetime.

And that was Xavier.

My mind drifted back to my family historical story from the journal, that of the Beaumont fortune built on the determination of a forgotten child who had refused to stay forgotten.

It suddenly feels like the staggering irony of history was arranging itself into the same shape again, one generation further down, in the same estate.

I was not a man given to sentiment. Across seventy-eight years of my life, most of it spent in difficult season the Beaumont name had weathered. I know practically better now.

One thing is forming formidably, and if my assumptions are certain, it only leads to one doubtful truth.

Bryan James Ashford was my great-grandson.

But I couldn’t phantom this on pure assumptions, because of some date alignment and facial look alike. I need something more concrete and proofreading.

Suddenly, my brain clicked.

DNA… I need a DNA test

I reached for my phone immediately and dialed Raymond back.

“I need a DNA test arranged privately,” I said as soon as he answered, “I’ll send you the details shortly.”

Ivanna’s POVThe truth about my visit to the estate wasn’t because I had a genuine reason for going. For some reason I couldn’t phantom, Xavier was acting weird lately. I mean so weird, and it’s less than two weeks to our engagement already, I can’t afford to condone any lapses at this point. I went to check on him at his penthouse but he wasn’t there. I called him and he wasn’t picking either, so, I had to add one plus one and I guessed he could be at his grandfather’s estate.Though, going to the Beaumont’s estate means killing two birds with one stone. I know Xavier’s grandfather, Arthur had always had strong opinions about table positioning at formal events, an old habit developed across decades of hosting quite a number of it. Pamela had listed it out specifically that getting his input early would save at least two rounds of revision later. So, you can say I had a genuine reason also. Nevertheless, I’m already at the estate ground. The house was calm when I entered, on one of

Xavier’s POVI drove to the estate the next day around midday.I saw Pamela’s call few minutes after I left the penthouse. I silenced her call angrily, I can’t deal with that for now. Ivanna’s call came into my phone barely two minutes after I ignored Pamela’s. I silenced it too, put my phone on silent mode and dropped it in the drawer.I knew Pamela had already communicated with her and whatever Pamela was calling about earlier had already been relayed. The drive took almost an hour in light weekend morning traffic, the land slimmed gradually into the kind of landscape that made you understand why someone had bought twelve acres of it fifty years ago had decided not to sell. The estate gates opened immediately my car got there on recognition of my plate. ***Margaret met me in the entrance hall with a wild smile.“You’re welcome, Mr. Xavier,” she said with a little smile tugged on her lips before it disappeared, the kind that clearly says these kind of visits are rare. “Mr. Beaumon

XAVIER’S POVBy Friday of that week, my calendar had accumulated four additional engagement-related items without my active participation, a menu tasting Celeste had booked on my behalf for Saturday morning, a call with the Alderton Hall events manager that had appeared in my schedule overnight, a reminder about confirming the final guest list, and a note from Ivanna asking whether I preferred the champagne toast before or after the dinner service.I stared at the calendar for a moment before I closed it.My grandfather also had called twice this week. Both times I had been in the middle of meeting that couldn’t be interrupted, once a call with the legal team, the second time, a board meeting that had been rescheduled once and I couldn’t afford to disrupt. I had called back both times after I was done but my calls only reached his voicemail. I hadn’t called again after then.I had thought what he wanted to discuss couldn’t be anything other than the planning of the engagement party, s

  • THE BILLIONAIRE'S FORGOTTEN NIGHT   CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE

Xavier’s POVI was at my office in the company headquarters when I got a call from Ivanna’s events coordinator, a woman named Pamela. She was one of the A-list events coordinator in the city, her clients are mostly top personalities in the elite circle. I had met her at a couple of social events I attended. So, I wasn’t that surprised when my personal assistant told me Pamela asked to schedule a call with me, I knew it was Ivanna’s doing.“Hello, Mr. Beaumont. I am Pamela James, your event coordinator. I’m calling to confirm your engagement checklist and when you will be available for an appointment with the fashion stylist.I told her to go through Ivanna for every appointments and other things to do, she’ll handle it better. She answered in affirmative and I ended the call.My assistant came in with a cup of coffee I requested few minutes ago. I told her some other things she needed to do before I dismissed her.I was half way through with my coffee when I got a call from Ivanna.“P

  • THE BILLIONAIRE'S FORGOTTEN NIGHT   CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR

Arthur’s POVI was having my breakfast when I got Raymond call. He has the result from the DNA test, the one I was almost dying to have.I picked the call immediately my phone vibrated against the dining table, my heart leaped for the next words I’ll hear from Raymond. Depending on what the result says, I know it will change my view on a lot of events happening around me lately.“The results are in,” he said. “Shall I read them or send the document?”“Read them first,” I said. That’s what I wanted for now, let me hear a third person read it to me first. I may collapse under anxiety in the next few seconds of waiting for the file. Raymond’s voice was calm and calculated as he read the result, knowing fully well how the burden of what he was reading may affect an old man if not read with care.“The DNA analysis confirms a biological relationship between Sample A and Sample B consistent with”“Say it plainly, Raymond,” I cut him abruptly. “No laboratory terms please, I’m too old for tha

Aria’s POVI heard boss’s engagement party from Priya. She had told me that morning in her teasingly manner.Priya was the accounts floor’s most reliable source of information about everything and anything that happened above the fourth floor, and the company at large. Feel free to call her the office blogger. It was on a Friday, around ten forty-something in the morning, I was midway through a secondary reconciliation Marcus had assigned me when Priya suddenly appeared at the edge of my desk, a file was in one hand, her tablet in another, but the look she gave me instantly told me that that wasn’t the bone of contention.“Have you seen the internal memo?” she asked.“Which one?”She turned her tablet toward me.It was a brief, formally worded notice from the Beaumont Group communications office. The kind of internal memo that dressed itself as informational while being, in substance, an announcement. The information was to inform staff that the company would be hosting a private ce

Aria’s POVI told Denise I needed until the end of the day, thanked her and walked out of the office. It wasn’t a real solution, just a delay dressed up as one, a way to buy myself a few hours to figure out which obligation I could push back furthest without consequences catching up to me first. Aria’s POVI sat with the acceptance letter and the pregnancy test side by side on my desk for three days before I made the decision.
