Arthur’s POV

I gave Bryan three rules over the weekend.

The first was that he could go anywhere on the ground floor of the estate without asking.

The second was that the koi pond was for looking, not touching, after the incident two weekends ago where he had attempted to personally introduce himself to the largest fish and we had nearly lost a shoe.

The third was that the east corridor’s rarely used wing was off-limits, nothing dangerous lived there but the last time a new staff went to that side of the estate unsupervised, we spent about forty minutes locating a missing staff member who had only gone there for a lightbulb but lost his way around the layout.

Bryan nodded at all three rules with the solemn attentiveness of a child who was already calculating which ones had the most flexibility.

Soon, he had tested the first one enthusiastically, he already learnt from the past incident with the second one, so, he only watched the fishes as they swam in the water, with a considerably measured distance from the pond.

I had assumed that will be the case with the third one too, but Bryan amazed me like he always did.

I was in my study reviewing foundation correspondence when Margaret rushed in, startling out of my wit.

“Mr. Beaumont,” she panicked. “We can’t find Bryan, it seems he went to the east wing, and now, we couldn’t find him.”

“East wing?” I jumped out of my chair, grabbed my walking stick by the side of the chair and dashed out of the study, Margaret followed behind.

We were almost at the the east corridor. I could see staffs scampering all over the east wing.

Then I caught hold of Bryan, walking out of the side entrance, his little hands clutched around a ledger firmly.

I ran over to him in careful steps. “Bryan.”

He was actually holding two things, I saw the other clearly when I moved closer to him.

I led him back to the main wing and sat him down on one of the sofa in the sitting room.

The ledgers still clutched to his chest. I reached out for it.

One was an old photograph, sepia-edged and mounted on the stiff card backing of the previous century’s portrait studios. The second was a leather-bound ledger that had no business being in the hands of a five-year-old.

That ledger was older than everyone currently alive in this building combined.

He looked up at me with his bright, entirely unrepentant eyes.

“I found a secret corridor,” he announced, like he was announcing a moment from an Ultimate Search, “behind the door that looked like a wall.”

I say down on the sofa beside him.

“It had dusty stuff in it,” he said. “And this,” he pointed to the old photograph in my hand, “looks so much like me. Why am I in this photograph, Arthur?”

I burst out laughing.

“What do you mean, you?” I laughed again, amused at his innocence.

That old photograph was that of Xavier when he was younger, around same age as Bryan now. The little man as mistook the younger Xavier as himself, except that, as little as he was, he knew that picture was not taken in this era and age.

If Xavier and Bryan were to be of the same age now, I would have mistook Bryan for Xavier as well. The resemblance was too striking. That was the first thing that attracted me to Bryan.

Bryan was looking at me all along with he complete, unselfconscious certainty of a child who had recognized his own face in an old photograph and simply wanted an explanation about why it was there.

“That’s not you, my boy,” I said finally.

Bryan frowned, took the photograph back and stared into it like the answers to his questions will come to him when he stares enough.

“This is me, Papa” he argued. “Look at it very well, he has my face,” he touched his face and tilted the photograph sideways, as if angled enough will make me see that the boy in the photograph was him.”

Bryan now calls me Papa, and whenever he called me that, I feel so much joy in me. It feels like I’m being called by my own blood.

“Can I keep it?” Bryan asked.

“No,” I said, gently taking it back. “But I’ll tell you who it was another time. I promise.”

Bryan pouted in mild disagreement but he released the photograph.

Then he pointed to the ledger with renewed enthusiasm. “What about that? It has old writings in it when I opened it. Most of the words in it were too big for me but I saw Beaumont written somewhere in it. And I know you’re a Beaumont. Is it a family book?”

I looked at the again, I had dropped it on the sofa beside me.

Then I looked at Bryan again. “You know it’s wrong to go through stuffs not handed over to you directly… right?”

Bryan scowled slightly. “I’m sorry, Papa.”

“It’s okay,” I smiled and pulled him closer.

I took the ledger and opened it.

The handwriting inside was that of my grandfather’s. I know the handwriting with more than certainty. Growing up, my father always tell me one story, and that was about his own father.

A story of how my grandfather was born out of wedlock and was almost casted out of the family even when he was found. Reasons he said, was because his mother doesn’t fit into the elite circle social status as his father.

It was said that it took the intervention of God and the determination of my grandfather’s father to prevent his own relatives from denying him access to the family and its businesses.

The Beaumont fortune existed today because a forgotten child had refused to stay forgotten.

I looked at Bryan, his attention was already on the cartoon series now displaying on the television.

I closed the ledger and reached for my phone.

It was time to make the call I had been contemplating on.

Ivanna’s POVThe truth about my visit to the estate wasn’t because I had a genuine reason for going. For some reason I couldn’t phantom, Xavier was acting weird lately. I mean so weird, and it’s less than two weeks to our engagement already, I can’t afford to condone any lapses at this point. I went to check on him at his penthouse but he wasn’t there. I called him and he wasn’t picking either, so, I had to add one plus one and I guessed he could be at his grandfather’s estate.Though, going to the Beaumont’s estate means killing two birds with one stone. I know Xavier’s grandfather, Arthur had always had strong opinions about table positioning at formal events, an old habit developed across decades of hosting quite a number of it. Pamela had listed it out specifically that getting his input early would save at least two rounds of revision later. So, you can say I had a genuine reason also. Nevertheless, I’m already at the estate ground. The house was calm when I entered, on one of

Xavier’s POVI drove to the estate the next day around midday.I saw Pamela’s call few minutes after I left the penthouse. I silenced her call angrily, I can’t deal with that for now. Ivanna’s call came into my phone barely two minutes after I ignored Pamela’s. I silenced it too, put my phone on silent mode and dropped it in the drawer.I knew Pamela had already communicated with her and whatever Pamela was calling about earlier had already been relayed. The drive took almost an hour in light weekend morning traffic, the land slimmed gradually into the kind of landscape that made you understand why someone had bought twelve acres of it fifty years ago had decided not to sell. The estate gates opened immediately my car got there on recognition of my plate. ***Margaret met me in the entrance hall with a wild smile.“You’re welcome, Mr. Xavier,” she said with a little smile tugged on her lips before it disappeared, the kind that clearly says these kind of visits are rare. “Mr. Beaumon

XAVIER’S POVBy Friday of that week, my calendar had accumulated four additional engagement-related items without my active participation, a menu tasting Celeste had booked on my behalf for Saturday morning, a call with the Alderton Hall events manager that had appeared in my schedule overnight, a reminder about confirming the final guest list, and a note from Ivanna asking whether I preferred the champagne toast before or after the dinner service.I stared at the calendar for a moment before I closed it.My grandfather also had called twice this week. Both times I had been in the middle of meeting that couldn’t be interrupted, once a call with the legal team, the second time, a board meeting that had been rescheduled once and I couldn’t afford to disrupt. I had called back both times after I was done but my calls only reached his voicemail. I hadn’t called again after then.I had thought what he wanted to discuss couldn’t be anything other than the planning of the engagement party, s

  • THE BILLIONAIRE'S FORGOTTEN NIGHT   CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE

Xavier’s POVI was at my office in the company headquarters when I got a call from Ivanna’s events coordinator, a woman named Pamela. She was one of the A-list events coordinator in the city, her clients are mostly top personalities in the elite circle. I had met her at a couple of social events I attended. So, I wasn’t that surprised when my personal assistant told me Pamela asked to schedule a call with me, I knew it was Ivanna’s doing.“Hello, Mr. Beaumont. I am Pamela James, your event coordinator. I’m calling to confirm your engagement checklist and when you will be available for an appointment with the fashion stylist.I told her to go through Ivanna for every appointments and other things to do, she’ll handle it better. She answered in affirmative and I ended the call.My assistant came in with a cup of coffee I requested few minutes ago. I told her some other things she needed to do before I dismissed her.I was half way through with my coffee when I got a call from Ivanna.“P

Arthur’s POVI was having my breakfast when I got Raymond call. He has the result from the DNA test, the one I was almost dying to have.I picked the call immediately my phone vibrated against the dining table, my heart leaped for the next words I’ll hear from Raymond. Depending on what the result says, I know it will change my view on a lot of events happening around me lately.“The results are in,” he said. “Shall I read them or send the document?”“Read them first,” I said. That’s what I wanted for now, let me hear a third person read it to me first. I may collapse under anxiety in the next few seconds of waiting for the file. Raymond’s voice was calm and calculated as he read the result, knowing fully well how the burden of what he was reading may affect an old man if not read with care.“The DNA analysis confirms a biological relationship between Sample A and Sample B consistent with”“Say it plainly, Raymond,” I cut him abruptly. “No laboratory terms please, I’m too old for tha

Aria’s POVI heard boss’s engagement party from Priya. She had told me that morning in her teasingly manner.Priya was the accounts floor’s most reliable source of information about everything and anything that happened above the fourth floor, and the company at large. Feel free to call her the office blogger. It was on a Friday, around ten forty-something in the morning, I was midway through a secondary reconciliation Marcus had assigned me when Priya suddenly appeared at the edge of my desk, a file was in one hand, her tablet in another, but the look she gave me instantly told me that that wasn’t the bone of contention.“Have you seen the internal memo?” she asked.“Which one?”She turned her tablet toward me.It was a brief, formally worded notice from the Beaumont Group communications office. The kind of internal memo that dressed itself as informational while being, in substance, an announcement. The information was to inform staff that the company would be hosting a private ce

Aria’s POVI never got the chance to call him first.
