EVANGELINE

My gaze remained fixed on the doctor, unblinking as overwhelming shock washed over me.

Liver failure.

The words didn't seem real.

I opened my mouth in disbelief, but no sound came out.

Then a laugh bubbled up, completely inappropriate and uncontrollable. It quickly turned into loud, unrestrained giggles that I couldn't stop as I looked at Gael.

His face was dark and thunderous, more serious than I'd ever seen it. For the first time since I'd known him, I saw genuine shock decorating his usually composed features.

I laughed harder, the sound bordering on hysterical as my gaze darted between the doctor's surprised face and Gael's stunned expression.

"Yesterday, I was actively looking for a way to kill myself. Now there's a time bomb inside me that's going to do the job for me."

Tears formed at the edges of my eyes, though whether from laughter or despair, I couldn't tell.

"Don't worry, Mrs. Dettling. We'll strive to find a suitable donor for you as quickly as possible. Don't

EVANGELINEGael drove toward his penthouse in complete silence. My mind and heart were fighting an intense internal battle that had no solution. My heart was pushing me toward the edge of despair and self-destruction, while my rationality refused to give in, leaving me stuck between the two like a bridge under too much weight. These heavy emotional chains were getting tighter around my limbs with each passing hour, making even simple movements feel hard and exhausting. It was like the entire world had closed in around me until it couldn't hold the size of my pain anymore. How would I face everyone now?I didn't want to see those looks of pity directed toward me, the careful expressions people wore when they encountered someone whose life had become a cautionary tale. They would only increase my pain and confirm that I really had become someone with broken wings, unable to fly or even walk properly through the world."Aren't you going to get out?" Gael's voice cut through my spiraling

EVANGELINEThe person was partially concealed behind a parked car.Who was it and why inform my parents of our location? The question was answered almost immediately as the figure stepped into clearer view.Seraphina.She closed the distance until she was directly across from us with the widest, most satisfied smile spread across her face. The look of someone who derived genuine pleasure from other people's pain and suffering.Gael followed my gaze and his jaw tightened when he spotted her. He reached for the door, but I stopped him.My breathing turned ragged with fury as anger flooded my system. My gaze involuntarily landed on a pen in the car's center console and I picked it up without hesitation, my fingers wrapping around it with deadly intent. With that, I climbed out of the vehicle, walking toward her with sparks flying from my eyes, every step fueled by rage that had been building for far too long. The months of cruelty, the snide comments, her attempt on my life… it all cryst

EVANGELINE"I'm a ghost wearing a dead baby's name, living in a dead woman's place! I'm built on a foundation of corpses and crimes! How many people had to suffer for me to exist as Evangeline Morrison?" My voice rose with each word, climbing higher and higher until I was nearly screaming."You're not..." Gael started to speak, but I cut him off."Don't tell me I'm not those things! Don't tell me I'm real when everything about me is fake!" My entire body shook with sobs.Gael ran his palm up and down my back in long, soothing strokes. "You're not nothing. You're not fake. You're Evangeline. You're real. You're here, in front of me, breathing, alive and real.""But who is Evangeline?" My voice broke on every syllable. "The dead baby? The stolen orphan? The fake daughter? Which one am I supposed to be? I don't even know my real name! I don't know when I was actually born! I don't know where I came from or who my real parents were! Everything about me is a lie!""You're the woman in fron

EVANGELINEGael's eyes searched mine with an intensity that made me want to look away, checking the sincerity behind my request and probably trying to gauge whether I could handle what he was about to tell me.Then he reached for my hand and cradled my fingers."Are you sure?" The question was loaded with meaning, a final chance to turn back before crossing a line we couldn't uncross.I stayed still for a long moment while our eyes remained locked. Then I nodded slowly. My heart pounded so hard I thought he must be able to hear it in the quiet room.Gael's gaze softened. I could see the reluctance in his eyes, the way he clearly didn't want to be the one to destroy whatever remained of my world. He knew how much I needed to know, understood that the not knowing was eating me alive.I pulled back slightly to look at him. "I'm sure you know everything, Gael. Tell me the truth. Where am I from?" My voice cracked on the last word.Gael's palm moved to stroke the back of my hand while his

EVANGELINEMy mind felt disconnected from reality, as though I were watching everything unfold from somewhere far away.I couldn't process the weight of his words or the meaning behind them, couldn't make sense of anything except the overwhelming need to escape. When Gael tried to pull me back toward the hospital entrance, I planted my feet firmly on the ground and refused to move another step."I don't want to go back there." My body started trembling again, more violently this time.Gael’s gaze moved between my bare, injured legs and my terrified face. Without warning, he bent down and scooped me into his arms as though I weighed nothing at all.My arms instinctively wrapped around his neck, seeking stability in the chaos consuming me.I found myself staring at his profile, at the hard line of his jaw, at the exhaustion carved into every feature of his face. He looked as though he hadn't slept in days, as though the weight of the world rested on his shoulders and he was barely manag
