EVANGELINE

I instinctively wrapped my arms around Gael’s neck to steady myself and my legs circling his waist.

He settled back down with me straddling his lap.

The position was intimate, more intimate than we'd ever been. I could feel the heat radiating from his body, could smell the mixture of cigarettes and cologne that clung to his skin.

My heart hammered as the reality of our position sank in. I was trapped. The thin fabric of my nightgown did nothing to create a barrier between us, and I could feel every plane and angle of his body beneath me.

"What are you doing?" Panic cracked through my voice as I tried to pull away from his iron hold.

This wasn't what I'd meant when I talked about acting like a real couple.

The cigarette still burned between his fingers and his grip on my waist tightened, holding me firmly in place.

Calm eyes met my terrified ones, and I realized with growing horror how impossible it was to predict this man's next move.

  • THE BILLIONAIRE'S RELUCTANT BRIDE    CH.40

EVANGELINEI scrambled away from Gael until my back was pressed to the headboard, tears gathering in my eyes. The possibility that had been lurking in the back of my mind suddenly felt very real.He wouldn't force himself on me. Would he?The question echoed in my mind as I watched Gael straighten at the foot of the bed.He remained there, hands casually tucked into his pockets while he regarded me with cold detachment. His phone buzzed just then, cutting through the tense silence that had settled over the room.He answered without taking his eyes off me.I felt put on display, unable to escape his scrutiny."Where are you?" His tone was entirely different now. Softer, intimate, tender in a way he'd never spoken to me. "Coming."The change in his voice made my blood run cold. He was speaking to another woman, and he didn't care that I was witnessing this blatant display of infidelity. The cruelty of it transformed my expression from fear to disgust. Was he really going to flaunt his a

EVANGELINEThe way moonlight carved the angles of Gael’s face made him look almost otherworldly if not for the absolute coldness in those black eyes that promised nothing but pain. He'd changed from his earlier clothes into dark pajama pants and nothing else, his chest bare and marked with abs I'd never been allowed to feel.I struggled to catch my breath, lungs still burning from the toxic smoke."Can you please smoke somewhere else? I can barely breathe." The plea came out more desperate than I wanted, hoarse from sleep and the bitter poison that kept filling the room.My throat felt raw. I could taste the nasty nicotine coating my tongue. The smoke seemed to stick to everything, making the air thick and suffocating.Gael showed no reaction to my suffering. Instead, he smoothly got up from the bed, walking toward me with careful, measured steps that echoed in the choking silence.Terror crept up my spine.I hugged myself protectively, pulling the thin blanket closer to my shaking bo

EVANGELINEI let out a shaky breath, pressing my fingertips to my temples where a killer headache had settled in.The tension in my shoulders finally started to ease up as I walked toward our bedroom, but my heart was still pounding.Gael had disappeared after our blowout, leaving nothing behind except the echo of his nasty promise.I'd spent the whole day sneaking around and taking the long way through the mansion. The fear of facing whatever payback he had planned had eaten up every single thought, every breath and every second I was awake. The memory of that look on his face still messed with my head. The total shock that flashed across his features when I ripped those divorce papers to shreds right in front of him. He never expected me to fight for this dead marriage, never saw coming my sudden switch from victim to fighter.Honestly, neither did I.The decision had hit me just as hard. I'd been all set to sign those papers and get the hell out of this cold, loveless prison. Most

EVANGELINEI stood outside our bedroom door later that evening, my hand trembling on the handle. The conversation with his parents had left me emotionally drained, but I knew this confrontation was inevitable. I had made a decision, one that surprised even me, one I was determined to see through.I could hear movement inside. The clink of glass, the scrape of a chair. Gael was drinking again, drowning his sorrows in alcohol as he had been doing since our wedding day.I entered the room and the first thing I saw was his figure standing on the balcony, smoking while holding a glass in his other hand. The sight was so familiar now. Gael drowning his sorrows in alcohol and nicotine. The city lights of Aldermere spread out below him, but he seemed oblivious to the beauty of the view.He looked at me from the corner of his eye before setting down the cup, stuffing out the cigarette and walking toward me.I remained still and followed his movements with my eyes until there were only a few st

EVANGELINEThe flight back to Aldermere felt endless. We sat in separate sections of the private jet, the tension between us thick enough to cut with a knife.Gael buried himself in his laptop, pointedly ignoring my existence, while I stared out the window at the clouds below, my mind racing with questions I couldn't answer. The flight attendant this time wasn’t Sarah. She was a young woman with kind eyes. She approached me several times to offer refreshments, but I could barely manage more than water. My stomach was in knots, and every time I looked toward Gael's section of the plane, I felt anger and something else I couldn't quite identify. Hurt, maybe. Or disappointment.I tried to piece together the fragments of conversation I'd overheard, the tears in his mother's eyes, the desperation in Arthur's voice when he'd called me to his office that day. There was a story here, a complicated web of relationships and secrets that I was only beginning to understand. As we began our descen
