EVANGELINE

Three days passed in tense, suffocating silence. Again, Gael barely acknowledged my existence, speaking to me only when absolutely necessary and treating me like an unwelcome stranger. The cold shoulder treatment was almost worse than his anger - at least when he was furious, I knew where I stood. This indifference left me constantly on edge, waiting for the other shoe to drop.

I spent most of my time in the garden or library, avoiding the main areas where I might run into him. The household staff seemed to sense the tension. Even Cordelia had taken to eating her meals in her room, claiming she wasn't feeling well, even though I suspected she simply wanted to avoid the toxic atmosphere that had settled over the mansion.

On the fourth morning, I was sitting in the breakfast room picking at my food when the security guard approached hesitantly.

"Mrs. Dettling? I have the information you requested about the taxi."

My fork clattered on my plate as I looked up eagerly. "You foun

EVANGELINEThe next day passed quietly and peacefully. I went out for a walk with my Mom through the neighborhood. We strolled past the houses where my childhood friends had lived, the park where I'd played as a little girl, the corner store where my Dad used to buy me candy as a special treat.I enjoyed every moment with her, and it lifted a significant weight of worry from my heart. She truly was my happiness hormone, the person who could make everything better just by being there."You seem more relaxed today," she observed as we walked past the old elementary school I'd attended. "Yesterday you looked so tense, so worried. I'm glad to see some color back in your cheeks."I squeezed her arm affectionately. "Being here helps. Being with you and Dad helps. I forget sometimes how much I need this.""You're always welcome here, you know that. This will always be your home, no matter what."The words brought tears to my eyes, though I tried to hide them.In the evening, I began preparin

EVNAGELINEHe looked away from me, blinking slowly. Those simple gestures confirmed everything I'd suspected about what I'd just said to him.A brief silence stretched between us."I won't force you to tell me what really happened, but please... stay away from her."Our eyes met in a long stare that seemed to last forever. I couldn't figure out the meaning behind his unclear expression - there were layers there, depths I couldn't reach or understand. His face remained unreadable, giving nothing away. After we finished eating in uncomfortable silence, the tension so thick I could barely swallow my food, I decided to leave.I said goodbye and headed for the door.Once I reached my car, I checked my phone that I'd left inside earlier. The screen lit up immediately, showing dozens of missed calls and messages from Cordelia and Gael flooding the display. My heart sank as I scrolled through them.I started the engine and put the phone to my ear while pulling out of the parking space."Evang

EVANGELINEThe clock on the dashboard read 8:47 PM as I navigated through the empty streets. The silence in the car was broken only by Thaddeus's occasional groans and the hum of the engine.I watched Gael's motionless figure in the rearview mirror until he disappeared from sight, swallowed by the darkness behind us.A transparent layer of tears resumed accumulating in my eyes, blurring my vision and making it difficult to focus on the road. The doubts that always haunted me might actually be true. Maybe I was fooling myself about Gael, about who he really was beneath all that anger and violence. Maybe Thaddeus was right, and I was just clinging to an illusion of the man I thought I knew.I knew there had to be a valid reason for his anger. No one becomes that emotional in a vacuum. He might be suffering from some disorder or trauma, something that explained his volatile behavior. He might have been exposed to something terrible in his past that made him what he is now.I was a psycho

EVANGELINEThat voice was enough to send waves of panic crashing through my very being like a tsunami.I could feel Gael’s eyes darting between Thaddeus and me, taking in the compromising position we were in.Thaddeus holding me this way, his arms wrapped around my waist while I struggled against him, looked incredibly suspicious. My heart rate spiked instantly. All my focus centered on separating Thaddeus's arms from around me.The urgency of the situation gave me strength I didn't know I possessed. With tremendous effort, I finally managed to break free from his embrace. My feet hit the ground solidly, and I stumbled back a step to regain my balance. Only then did I allow my gaze to find Gael’s familiar frame advancing toward us.The moonlight caught the sharp angles of his face, highlighting the dangerous glint in his eyes. Even from a distance, I could see the tension in his shoulders, the predatory way he moved. He looked like a man on the hunt.We exchanged tense looks across th

EVANGELINEThe rest of the day passed in a blur of forced normalcy. Sebastian and Thaddeus returned from town with several bottles of spirits, their cheerful mood a contrast to my increasingly dark mood. The group gathered on the terrace as planned, settling into comfortable chairs arranged in a loose circle.Gael didn't join us, and I found that his absence was both a relief and a disappointment. Part of me had hoped that our confrontation might have shaken something loose in him, might have made him reconsider his choices. But apparently, I'd been naive to think that one conversation could undo months or maybe years of poor decisions.Margaret was the first to feel the effects of the alcohol, giggling at jokes that weren't particularly funny and telling rambling stories that seemed to have no point. Her uninhibited laughter was infectious, and soon the entire group was more relaxed than we'd been since arriving at the lake house.I found myself watching Thaddeus with growing concern

EVANGELINEEvery eye turned toward Seraphina, who leaned back in her chair with what looked like calculated casualness."And with Gael," Margaret continued.I looked at Seraphina, knowing she was about to say something that would make the situation infinitely worse. Her expression was that of someone who thought they held all the cards, someone who believed they could manipulate any situation to their advantage."It was me," I said quickly, before she could respond. "I couldn't sleep, so I went for a walk in the garden. The darkness must have made it difficult to see clearly."Margaret frowned, clearly not satisfied with my explanation. "Am I so blind that I can't tell the difference between you and her? I know what I saw!"I sighed in exasperation, turning my full attention to her. "The garden was quite dark last night, Margaret. Without proper lighting, it would be easy to mistake one person for another." I paused, then added with just the right amount of indignation, "Besides, what
