EVANGELINE

"Welcome to your new home," Cordelia exclaimed, linking her arm with mine and pulling me inside as soon as we arrived.

The house I'd once visited as a guest had now become my permanent residence.

The thought should have been exciting, instead it felt like entering a beautiful prison - one with no hope of escape.

The mansion was even more imposing at night, its Gothic architecture casting long shadows in the moonlight. Windows glowed like eyes watching my every move, and I couldn't shake the feeling that I was being observed, judged, and found wanting.

I followed Gael with my eyes as he crossed past me with wide strides, climbing the stairs to the upper floor.

He made no effort to hide his anger at the situation, his shoulders rigid with barely contained hostility.

"Don't mind him," Cordelia whispered to me. "He's always moody after social events. He'll settle down."

I wished I could believe her optimism, but I knew better. This wasn't about social anxiety - this was about a man who had finally gotten what he wanted. He’d gotten complete control over someone he intended to destroy.

I exhaled deeply when Mrs. Dettling approached me with a warm, motherly smile.

"Oh, my dear Evangeline," she said, taking my hands in hers with genuine affection. "You look absolutely exhausted. This has been such a long day for you both."

Her eyes sparkled with joy as she continued, "You should go rest now, sweetheart. Tomorrow you can start settling into your new life properly, but tonight... well, tonight is special."

She winked at me in a way that made my stomach churn, completely oblivious to the terror coursing through my veins.

"Thank you, Mrs. Dettling," I managed to say.

"Please, call me Mom now," she corrected gently, squeezing my hands. "You're family now, dear. My son is so lucky to have found someone as wonderful as you."

If only she knew what kind of man her son really was.

Cordelia’s face glowed with excitement. "Oh, Evangeline! You were such a beautiful bride today. I'm so happy to finally have a sister!"

She pulled me into an enthusiastic hug that I barely had the strength to return.

"Get some rest," she whispered in my ear. "Tomorrow we can have breakfast together and you can tell me all about how romantic my brother was tonight."

The thought made bile rise in my throat, yet I forced a smile.

"Goodnight, everyone.” My voice trembled slightly.

"Goodnight, dear!" Mrs. Dettling called out. "Sleep well!"

"Don't stay up too late, you lovebirds!" Cordelia added with a giggle.

Soon, all I could hear was the thundering of my own heartbeat and the echo of my footsteps on the marble stairs. Each step took me further from the warmth and safety of the family below, and closer to whatever nightmare awaited me in the darkness above.

Should I knock?

The door was open.

Why would I need to knock?

How should I interact with him now?

Oh God, why did I feel so terrified?

These questions swirled inside my head while my body remained frozen in front of the bedroom door.

This was supposed to be our wedding night, the beginning of our life together as husband and wife. Instead, it felt like I was about to enter the lion's den.

I gathered what little courage I had left and took my first steps inside, darting my gaze around to inspect what would now be my prison.

A spacious room dominated by black decor, with a large bed in the center that looked more like an altar for sacrifice than a place of rest. A balcony on the far side overlooked the estate grounds, and I could see the iron bars that decorated the railing.

The room also included three separate doors.

I speculated that one led to the bathroom, another to a dressing room, but I couldn't determine what lay behind the third door. Something about that unknown space filled me with dread.

The room was undeniably masculine. It felt cold, unwelcoming, like the man who inhabited it.

The air itself seemed heavy with menace, as if the very walls had absorbed years of dark thoughts and darker intentions.

"What are you doing here?" Gael’s voice appearing out of nowhere startled me completely, and I spun around to find him coming out from what I now realized was a walk-in closet.

He'd changed out of his wedding suit into dark jeans and a black shirt.

"You scared me!"

"I asked what you're doing here." His voice was getting more dangerous.

I swallowed hard, confused by his increasingly heated tone as he blocked my path with his imposing frame.

In the dim lighting of the bedroom, he looked less like a man and more like a predator.

"Where else would I go?" The question came out smaller than I'd intended, revealing just how lost and frightened I felt.

I bit my lip in fear when he took a step toward me.

"Don't dream of staying in the same room with me!" His voice was a low growl that raised every hair on my body.

I looked at his hand pointing toward the door, then at the sparks flying in his eyes. This wasn't just anger - this was hatred so deep it seemed to have its own gravitational pull.

"This is my room too now. We're married. It's done."

I tilted my head away when he suddenly moved his face closer to mine, my feigned boldness evaporating instantly under his intense glare.

His proximity was overwhelming, suffocating, like being trapped in a cage with a wild animal.

“Is that so?” The way he said it made my blood run cold.

There was promise in his voice, anticipation, as if he'd been planning this moment for a long time.

I looked into his eyes, trying to understand the meaning behind his cryptic words, but as usual, he remained vague and unpredictable.

I flinched when his hand suddenly snaked around my waist, grabbing it and pulling me toward him until my chest collided with his.

The contact sent shockwaves through my system… not of desire, but of pure terror.

I tried to escape. However, he gripped my waist tightly, making any attempt futile.

His strength was overwhelming, reminding me just how helpless I truly was.

"What are you doing?"

His sudden movements and contradiction with his earlier words terrified me.

Gael leaned closer until his breath was hot on my skin. "In that case, I'll be happy to do things you won't enjoy. Things that will make you wish you'd never been born!"

EVNAGELINEHe looked away from me, blinking slowly. Those simple gestures confirmed everything I'd suspected about what I'd just said to him.A brief silence stretched between us."I won't force you to tell me what really happened, but please... stay away from her."Our eyes met in a long stare that seemed to last forever. I couldn't figure out the meaning behind his unclear expression - there were layers there, depths I couldn't reach or understand. His face remained unreadable, giving nothing away. After we finished eating in uncomfortable silence, the tension so thick I could barely swallow my food, I decided to leave.I said goodbye and headed for the door.Once I reached my car, I checked my phone that I'd left inside earlier. The screen lit up immediately, showing dozens of missed calls and messages from Cordelia and Gael flooding the display. My heart sank as I scrolled through them.I started the engine and put the phone to my ear while pulling out of the parking space."Evang

EVANGELINEThe clock on the dashboard read 8:47 PM as I navigated through the empty streets. The silence in the car was broken only by Thaddeus's occasional groans and the hum of the engine.I watched Gael's motionless figure in the rearview mirror until he disappeared from sight, swallowed by the darkness behind us.A transparent layer of tears resumed accumulating in my eyes, blurring my vision and making it difficult to focus on the road. The doubts that always haunted me might actually be true. Maybe I was fooling myself about Gael, about who he really was beneath all that anger and violence. Maybe Thaddeus was right, and I was just clinging to an illusion of the man I thought I knew.I knew there had to be a valid reason for his anger. No one becomes that emotional in a vacuum. He might be suffering from some disorder or trauma, something that explained his volatile behavior. He might have been exposed to something terrible in his past that made him what he is now.I was a psycho

All my focus centered on separating Thaddeus's arms from around me.The urgency of the situation gave me strength I didn't know I possessed. With tremendous effort, I finally managed to break free from his embrace. My feet hit the ground solidly, and I stumbled back a step to regain my balance. Only then did I allow my gaze to find Gael’s familiar frame advancing toward us.The moonlight caught the sharp angles of his face, highlighting the dangerous glint in his eyes. EVANGELINEThe rest of the day passed in a blur of forced normalcy. Sebastian and Thaddeus returned from town with several bottles of spirits, their cheerful mood a contrast to my increasingly dark mood. The group gathered on the terrace as planned, settling into comfortable chairs arranged in a loose circle.Gael didn't join us, and I found that his absence was both a relief and a disappointment. Part of me had hoped that our confrontation might have shaken something loose in him, might have made him reconsider his choices. But apparently, I'd been naive to think that one conversation could undo months or maybe years of poor decisions.Margaret was the first to feel the effects of the alcohol, giggling at jokes that weren't particularly funny and telling rambling stories that seemed to have no point. Her uninhibited laughter was infectious, and soon the entire group was more relaxed than we'd been since arriving at the lake house.I found myself watching Thaddeus with growing concern

EVANGELINEEvery eye turned toward Seraphina, who leaned back in her chair with what looked like calculated casualness."And with Gael," Margaret continued.I looked at Seraphina, knowing she was about to say something that would make the situation infinitely worse. Her expression was that of someone who thought they held all the cards, someone who believed they could manipulate any situation to their advantage."It was me," I said quickly, before she could respond. "I couldn't sleep, so I went for a walk in the garden. The darkness must have made it difficult to see clearly."Margaret frowned, clearly not satisfied with my explanation. "Am I so blind that I can't tell the difference between you and her? I know what I saw!"I sighed in exasperation, turning my full attention to her. "The garden was quite dark last night, Margaret. Without proper lighting, it would be easy to mistake one person for another." I paused, then added with just the right amount of indignation, "Besides, what

EVANGELINEThe next morning dawned bright and hot, with the kind of oppressive heat that made even the lightest clothes feel suffocating.I chose a simple dress that reached just above my knees, hoping the shorter length would provide some relief from the temperature. When I made my way downstairs, I found Sebastian and Cordelia already busy in the kitchen, working together to prepare what looked like an elaborate breakfast spread."Good morning," I called out, trying to inject some normalcy into my voice. They both looked up from their tasks and responded at the same time, "Good morning!"The timing made me smile despite my complicated mood. "Can I help with anything? I feel guilty just standing here while you do all the work."I moved to stand beside Cordelia, who was carefully slicing fresh strawberries into perfect, uniform pieces. Her movements were precise and methodical, and I found the repetitive action somehow soothing to watch."No, we're almost finished," she replied with a
