The morning brought another uncomfortable encounter at the breakfast table.

"Good morning." I spoke with embarrassment, still not accustomed to my new situation, to the fact that I had become Evangeline Dettling now.

"Good morning, dear Evangeline. Did you sleep well?" Mrs. Dettling asked with a knowing wink that made my cheeks burn with mortification.

I understood her implication perfectly but chose to feign ignorance, nodding in response.

Cordelia pulled me to sit beside her, patting my back covertly to ease my embarrassment.

Gael settled into the chair next to me a few minutes later, beginning to eat his breakfast quietly like everyone else.

Only the sounds of silverware could be heard as everyone focused on their plates.

I tried not to look at him, but I couldn't help noticing that he'd covered his arm with a long-sleeved shirt despite the warm weather.

"Gael, what happened to your hand? Is that a bite mark?" His uncle’s wife asked with obvious curiosity.
