YOU'RE MINE...

Abigail hadn’t expected the call.

It came two days after the club meeting, in the quiet hour just before lunch. She’d been curled up on the sofa with a book, enjoying the rare silence, when her phone lit up with an unknown number.

“Abigail Vandell?” The voice was smooth, cultured.

“Yes,” she said cautiously.

“This is Carmen Lois Cruz. I thought it was time you and I spoke… outside of the club.”

Abigail straightened in her seat. “I… appreciate you calling. May I ask why?”

“Because,” Carmen replied without hesitation, “if you’re going to last in that room, you’ll need more than polite smiles and perfect posture. And I think you already know that.”

Abigail exhaled slowly. “Are you offering advice?”

“I’m offering perspective,” Carmen said. “Over lunch. Tomorrow. There’s a place I like private, discreet. I’ll send you the details.”

And with that, the call ended.

Luke didn’t seem surprised when Abigail mentioned it that evening.

“She called you?” His brow lifted, but his voice stayed calm.

“Yes. Invited me to lunch.”

Luke took his time with his response, swirling the amber liquid in his glass. “You’re going.”

Abigail hesitated. “What if it’s… not exactly a friendly gesture?”

“That’s exactly why you’re going,” he said simply. “Carmen doesn’t waste time. If she’s making the effort, she has a reason. I want to know what it is.”

Abigail frowned. “You make it sound like an assignment.”

Luke’s gaze was steady. “In a way, it is. Let’s not make it seem complicated”

There was no point in arguing Luke had already decided.

The next day, Abigail arrived at the restaurant Carmen had named. It was understated from the outside, the kind of place you could pass without noticing, but inside it was a world apart dark polished wood, muted lighting, and a quiet hum of wealth that didn’t need to announce itself. It was empty she wondered why but gave herself the answer right away.

Carmen was already there, seated at a corner table. She rose as Abigail approached, offering a small, deliberate smile.

“Mrs. Vandell,” Carmen said, her voice like silk. “You’re even prettier in daylight.”

Abigail returned the smile, careful to keep it neutral. “Carmen. Thank you for inviting me.”

They sat, menus untouched.

“I’ll be direct,” Carmen began, resting her hands lightly on the table. “At the club, appearances are everything. They will test you. They will measure your worth by how little they can make you flinch.”

Abigail held her gaze. “I noticed.”

Carmen’s lips curved faintly. “Good. Then you also noticed I didn’t step in to rescue you. Not really. I simply… shifted the air in the room.”

“Yes,” Abigail said slowly. “And I wondered why.”

Carmen leaned back, studying her. “Because I wanted to see if you’d ask me that question. Most women in your position would simply be grateful and leave it at that.”

Abigail didn’t answer immediately. She wasn’t sure if Carmen was complimenting her or baiting her.

“I’m not in the habit of taking sides for strangers,” Carmen continued. “But Obetta” She paused, eyes glinting. “Obetta is tiresome. She’s been circling those rooms for years, desperate for relevance. Watching her try to rattle you was… predictable.”

“And you don’t like predictable?”

“I don’t like wasting my time,” Carmen corrected. “If you’re going to be in that room, I’d rather see someone with potential than another interchangeable ornament.”

Abigail frowned. “Potential for what?”

Carmen’s smile deepened. “That depends on what you decide to do with your place there. The club may not be about business on the surface, but influence is currency. And influence… is very easy to spend if you know how. In that room being competitive isn't what they spell out, it's something everyone carries st the sole back of their minds. It's already written. it's like something everyone already or rather should know, it doesn't really have to be spelt out.”

There was something almost dangerous in the way she said it, as if she were offering more than just social advice.

Abigail kept her voice steady. “I’ll keep that in mind.”

“Do more than that,” Carmen said softly. “Use it.”

The rest of lunch was polite, but layered every question Carmen asked seemed to measure Abigail’s reactions, every story she told carried an undercurrent of meaning.

By the time they parted, Abigail felt as if she’d passed some kind of invisible test… though she wasn’t entirely sure what the prize was.

What Abigail didn’t know was that somewhere else, Obetta was already planning her next move.

She sat in her penthouse suite, the city skyline glittering behind her, phone in hand.

“She went to lunch with Carmen?” she said to the voice on the other end.

“Yes,” the caller confirmed.

Obetta’s lips curved in a smile that was anything but warm. “Perfect. Carmen will grow bored of her soon enough. They always do. And when that happens, I’ll be there to remind Abigail exactly where she stands.”

Her gaze drifted to the glass of champagne in her hand. “Luke may have chosen her, but the club… the club will never truly be hers.”

She hung up, her smile sharpening. The game was far from over and in as long as Abigail was still in the game sure isn't going to end anytime soon.

***

That night, when Abigail told Luke about the lunch, his reaction was subtle too subtle.

“She tested you,” he said simply.

“Yes,” Abigail admitted. “I think I passed.”

Luke’s mouth twitched in that faint, unreadable smile of his. “You did. But remember Carmen doesn’t make allies. She makes investments.”

“Do you think I’m an investment?”

Luke’s eyes locked on hers. “You’re mine. That makes you everything.”

The way he said it left no room for argument.she was happy he acknowledged her.. unlike the beginning, she merely even had the right to act as his wife between themselves she sure doesn't know what the rest of the year Is going to be like but whatever it is she was ready.

LET THEM SCHEME..The evening sky over the Vandell estate was painted in strokes of violet and fading gold, the hush of twilight settling like a shroud over the gardens that only hours ago had been alive with chatter and power games. Now, the house seemed quiet, but silence in the Vandell world was always deceptive. Beneath it, tensions moved like currents, pulling in different directions.Carmen sat in her private lounge, the scent of sandalwood perfuming the air. Her glass of wine gleamed ruby red in the lamplight as she twirled it absently, eyes fixed on the ornate fire dancing in the hearth. Across from her, Obetta fidgeted, still flushed with anger.“You should have seen her,” Obetta hissed, leaning forward, her voice sharp with indignation. “Kate dismissed me as though I were a fool. And then then she turned around and praised Abigail without saying the words outright. Do you know how humiliating that was? Me, scolded like a child in her pr

YOU HELD YOUR GROUND...The Vandell gardens were at their peak in early spring, a riot of roses and lilies framed by carefully pruned hedges. The family estate had been chosen to host a luncheon for a select circle of aristocratic women an event that, on the surface, appeared to be a simple gathering of elegance, but in truth, was as much about power as it was about leisure.Kate Vandell had orchestrated the luncheon with her usual precision. Invitations had been sent only to those whose names carried weight. Nothing in the event was left to chance, not the seating, not the menu, not even the order of conversation. And now, as the guests began to arrive, Kate watched them with the poised gaze of a queen surveying her court.Among the guests, Abigail stood out. Not because of flamboyance, but because of her restraint. She wore a soft ivory dress, simple yet graceful, her dark hair pinned neatly back, a touch of pearl at her ears. She moved with careful steps, offering greetings where n

IT WAS CHALLENGING.. The Vandell mansion was a place of understated grandeur. Its walls held not only wealth but secrets legacies of power and pride layered into every corner. And at the heart of it all sat Kate Vandell, matriarch of the family, a woman whose presence alone commanded respect. It was mid-afternoon when Obetta arrived. Her heels clicked against the polished floors as she was escorted into Kate’s sitting room. Sunlight poured through tall windows, catching on the crystal vases and gilded frames, but nothing in the room shone brighter than Kate herself. She sat at a high-backed chair near the window, dressed elegantly in a deep emerald gown, pearls at her throat, a cup of tea poised delicately in her hand. Obetta curtsied slightly in greeting. “Lady Vandell.” Kate’s eyes swept over her, sharp as ever. She offered a small nod. “Obetta. You seem… restless. What brings you here unannounced?” Obetta perched on the edge of the opposite seat, her expression a mix of indign

YOU TURNED HER INTO A HERO...The night was far from over, though the glitter of the gala had begun to fade into memory for most of its guests. The chandeliers dimmed, the chatter waned, and yet two very different storms brewed in separate corners of the city.Carmen and Obetta:Obetta slipped into Carmen’s suite at the hotel where the event had been hosted, her gown still sparkling but her confidence long since dimmed. Her painted lips were pressed into a tight line, and her posture, usually upright and commanding, sagged under the invisible weight of humiliation.Carmen was waiting. She hadn’t left the ballroom immediately after Abigail’s triumph; instead, she had lingered, socializing, smiling, controlling the narrative as only she could. But when she finally dismissed her entourage and ascended to her suite, it was with a storm simmering in her chest. The moment Obetta entered, Carmen’s expression hardened. She didn’t stand to greet her. She didn’t offer a drink. She merely fixed

LETS GIVE THEM A SHOW...The night of the charity gala arrived with the weight of inevitability. The Vandells had been invited weeks before, but the timing could not have been more charged. Whispers about Maya had spread like a plague through the social circles, seeded carefully by Carmen and nurtured by Obetta’s sly tongue. To many in the city’s elite, this gala was less about charity and more about theater an opportunity to watch Abigail either falter or rise.Abigail knew it. That was precisely why she had made her decision: she would not walk into that glittering hall alone.Earlier that evening, the estate’s grand foyer bustled with the quiet efficiency of preparation. Abigail stood before the full-length mirror, smoothing down the soft folds of her midnight-blue gown. Diamonds shimmered at her ears, but it was the quiet determination in her eyes that stole her reflection.“Ma’am,” her driver said, bowing slightly as he approached. “The car is ready.”“Good,” Abigail replied. THEN I'LL FALL STANDING...The city’s night skyline glimmered like a thousand jewels scattered carelessly across black velvet, but for Carmen, there was no beauty in it. She stood at the tall glass windows of her penthouse, a glass of red wine swirling in her hand, her reflection sharp against the glittering lights.Abigail’s words replayed in her mind quiet, precise, cutting in their own way. And yet with him, I’m everything you’re not. It wasn’t just defiance; it was mockery. And Carmen couldn’t abide mockery. Not from someone she considered a child playing in a world she didn’t deserve. “You’re too quiet.”Obetta’s voice drifted from the silk-draped lounge chair where she sat, legs crossed, her own glass of wine untouched. She had been watching Carmen with that sly smile of hers, the one that always suggested she had an angle no one else could quite see.Carmen turned, her expression cool. “Silence doesn’t mean surrender.”“It almost sounded like it,” Obetta drawled. “She humiliat
