The evening was drenched in gold. We arrived at David Wolfe foundation anniversary in a slick black car that looked like it has never seen a drop of rain. Jake held my hand, his other pressing gently on my back. we stepped into a carpet. The flashes hit us instantly camera bulb popping like fire works. I blinked through t the blinding lights, smile frozen in place.

“Keep it natural.” He whispered curling his fingers around mine.

Then his voice shifted.

“Fuck!” He muttered under his breath sharp low.

It was the first time I’d heard him curse.

I followed his gaze. There he was David Wolfe..

“Well, well.” He drawled a  wolffish smirk playing on his lips.

“Look who is here! Jake and his fiancée fiancée charming.”

“Happy anniversary.” Jake said evenly.

“Don’t be hilarious.” David turned his eyes on me. Cold. Calculating.” And you my lady?”

“Im alright.”I replied holding my glass a little tighter.

“ enjoying the moment?”

“Absolutely.”

“Chloe?”

“Mackenzie, Chloe Mackenzie.” I corrected softly.

David smiled but it didn’t reach his eyes.

“How strange, Jake decided to keep you as a secret this long.”

“ I’m pretty sure you have  some secrets of your own.”

Jake shifted slightly beside me but didn’t speak.

“She’s a great thing.”he said finally.

“She is.” David echoed, staring at me like I was a puzzle he intended to solve.

“Excellent”

Then he turned with so much politeness.

“Would you mind giving us a moment? I’d like to speak to my brother politely.”

“Of course”, I replied forcing a gracious smile as I slipped away , unsure where to go. I wondered toward a group of women near the bar, their laughter too practiced to be real.

Jake Wolfe

David and I had never been friends. We shared blood but never brotherhood. Our entire lives were a performance two sons fighting for the approval of a man who measured love in power.

When were became adults we worked very hard to prove that we were powerful but David started blurred the lines between business and pleasure. When our dad found out he was very angry and disappointed at him at the same time. David was suspended, I didn’t celebrate but I didn’t stop him either.

I kept my head down, worked hard and won Dad’s trust. Eventually I was handled the reins of the company while David was still trying to prove that he had changed. Then our father died. And whatever small relationship we had was buried with him.

“So about your  fiancée!” He said to me smoothly

“ What about my fiancée?”

“I know you too well Jake.”

“ And what does that have to do with anything ?”

“ I mean, She too polite too polished. Like a scientist built her in the lab.”

“If you insist.”

“What are you planning Jake?”

“I breathe, you think it’s a strategy.”

“You always act like dad handed you the crown. He didn’t. He died before he could fix his mistake.”

“I earned everything goddamn thing I have.”I clenched my jaw.

“Really?” His smile faded “You think he’d be proud of you now?”

“You think so?”

“When he passed he told you to do thing and you didn’t. You know what it means? That you give no fuck about the legacy or him but your goddamn self.

I took a step forward, voice sharp. “Are we talking about killing people and buying them out of their homes David?”

“This is business,” he snipped. If you don’t take a shot someone else will. We are fucking wolves, mafias, I don’t even know when that will get into your head.”

“Like all blood that was spilt for you to build this foundation? That’s what  you mean?”

“So is the company your own! Don’t play innocent with me, we are not good people stop insisting. I always wonder what dad saw in you, so disappointing.”

He patted my shoulder, mockingly gentle.” Have fun little brother.”I clenched my fist.

Why does it have to be your own people who bring the worst in you?

Chloe Quinn

He found me again but the sparkle in his eyes was gone. He looked like someone carved light out of him.

“Are you okay?” I asked.

He nodded his body said otherwise.

“You are not good at hiding your emotions.”

“Im alright Chloe, please.”

“You sure? Because you look like a man hiding a secret.”

“I decide what not to tell you. For  your own good.”

“For my own? Or yours?”

He hesitated.“Both of us I guess.”

“Great,” I said quietly, watching him as he stared off in distance.

“Want to get for some fresh air?”

“Desperately.”

We found our way upstairs to a quite terrace, a soft breeze brushing against my skin. The silence between us was awkward. It was heavy. Like words were sitting between us unspoken.

“Do you want to talk about it?”

“No, I’m alright.”

“You know… we’re living in the same house now. You can talk to me, I may not fix it but I’ll listen.”

He gave a dry laugh.”And what’s that going to solve?”

“Maybe nothing . Maybe just a hug.”

He laughed again, real, loud, like it caught him by surprise.

“Sure?” He asked.

“Yeah.”

“That’s odd.” He said shaking his head with a crooked smile.

“What did you expect?”

“Not a hug, definitely not a hug.”

“You think I’m funny.?”

“Now I do, yeah.”

That was the first time I saw him like that. Real. Vulnerable. Human. He threw his head back a little when he laughed, looked away like he didn’t want me to see too much of him.

“Can I give you that hug?” I asked softly.

He hesitated, hiss hands in his pockets, he shrugged, awkward.

“No you’re not serious.”

“I’m afraid I am.”

He sighed. “Alright but don’t ever promise me a hug ever again.”

He said not wanting to get close to me.

I stepped closer. Slid my arms around him. He didn’t hug me back. But he didn’t pull away either.

I felt the tension in his chest, the beating of his heart beneath my my cheek. He stood still as a stone. But there was something in his silence that spoke louder than any word. Pain, pressure, grief he couldn’t name. And I realized he wasn’t a man made in stones . He was a man barely holding himself together. And somehow I was the first person he let close enough to feel it.

  • THE BILLIONAIRE’S TEMPORARY FIANCÉE    VIVIAN

Jake The office was too quiet. The only sound was the soft hum of the city far below, like a distant heartbeat. I sat behind my desk, sleeves rolled up and my tie hanging loose, staring at a pile of contracts I didn’t really need to read. I wasn’t thinking about numbers or deals or mergers. My mind was somewhere else.It was on her. Chloe.I forced myself to look back at the papers. No. Not now. Not ever. She was just a contract. An agreement. A temporary fix for a problem I had created. She didn’t belong in my thoughts when I had an empire to run, enemies to watch, and a family legacy to protect. But I couldn’t stop picturing her anyway.I saw her in my head the way she had been at the gala wearing that elegant dress, looking fragile but somehow stronger than anyone in the room. She had smiled for everyone even when I knew she was scared. And those eyes… the fire in them when she pushed back against me. She wasn’t supposed to matter. She was supposed to stay on the edges of my worl

  • THE BILLIONAIRE’S TEMPORARY FIANCÉE    A STRANGER’S NOTE

The late afternoon streets of the city buzzed with life. Cars honked in impatient bursts. Office workers hurried toward subways or stopped to grab takeout. The sun dipped low behind tall glass towers, streaking the sky with gold and crimson, as if the whole city were burning at its edges.I told Rosa I needed some fresh air. That was partly true. Really, I had to escape the Wolfe mansion the house that felt like it was pressing in on me from all sides. Its expensive walls, its spotless halls, its silent corners they weren’t comforting anymore. They felt like traps.I kept walking, farther than usual, weaving through crowded sidewalks. But even among strangers, freedom felt fragile. Every sound behind me a cough, a footstep, a rustle made me glance over my shoulder. Twice, I caught the edge of a shadow disappearing before I could focus. My chest tightened. Maybe it was nothing. Maybe it wasn’t.When my nerves started to fray, I spotted a café wedged between two boutiques. Its windows g

  • THE BILLIONAIRE’S TEMPORARY FIANCÉE    THE BLACK INK

When we went back to the Wolfe family house. I kept thinking that it was a good idea to wander around, instead of sitting next to them. Jake wasn’t home yet, you can imagine. I went to their library which was big and classy. I loved the interior design and the smell of the books. The Wolfe family library was the kind of room that could swallow you whole. The shelves stretched from the floor all the way to the ceiling, carved from dark mahogany wood that gleamed under the soft lights. Ladders on shiny rails stood against the walls so someone could reach the highest shelves. The air smelled like leather, dust, and a faint hint of smoke, the kind of smell that reminded you these books had lived through decades. It wasn’t a cozy place. It was a room for power for secrets. A place where memories were locked away behind gold embossed covers. I wasn’t supposed to be there. Jake hadn’t said I couldn’t enter, but the library felt private, sacred, like a part of him I wasn’t invited to tou

  • THE BILLIONAIRE’S TEMPORARY FIANCÉE    THE WHISPER

The morning after the gala, the penthouse felt too quiet like the world had stopped moving. No clinking of breakfast plates came from the kitchen. No sound of Jake’s deep voice filling the hallway. Even his phone, which always seemed to buzz without pause, was silent. The air felt heavy, like the calm before a storm.I padded barefoot across the cool marble floors, my robe wrapped tight around me. The memories of last night still clung to me: the glittering chandeliers, the sharp edge of David’s words, the way Jake had looked at me on the balcony before shutting me out again. In the kitchen, Rosa was already at work. A vase of lilies stood in the center of the marble island, their white petals bright against the gray morning light. She looked up when I entered and offered her usual soft smile the kind of smile that always felt like a warm blanket.“Good morning, Miss Chloe,” she said gently, her accent making the words musical.“Morning,” I mumbled, forcing my lips into a weak smile.

  • THE BILLIONAIRE’S TEMPORARY FIANCÉE    THE MIDNIGHT TENSION

The gala ended in a blur of glitter, champagne, and fake smiles. But David’s words clung to me long after the music faded. Quinn. Ask Jake. They echoed in my head like smoke I couldn’t clear away. Even as we left the ballroom, even as cameras stopped flashing, even as Jake’s hand slipped from mine once we were inside his sleek black car the words followed me.The ride home was silent. Jake scrolled through his phone with the same cold focus he always carried, while I stared out the tinted window. The city lights blurred into golden streaks, but my thoughts stayed sharp, circling the same fear over and over.I wanted to ask. I wanted to turn, demand the truth about what David had said. But something inside me hesitated. Asking might shatter the fragile, careful thread tying Jake and me together. When we reached the penthouse, Jake stepped out first. He didn’t wait for me. Inside, he shrugged off his jacket, loosened his tie, and walked straight into his study without a single word.I

  • THE BILLIONAIRE’S TEMPORARY FIANCÉE    THE REMEMBERING WEEK

The remembering week was held annually. It was like a gala. And gala was not just a party it was the event of the year. For weeks, the city’s society pages whispered about it, speculating on the guest list, the fashion, the deals that would be struck in corners of the glittering ballroom. Invitations were rare, almost sacred. Politicians, foreign leaders, and the richest of the rich fought for a chance to attend pretending they care about Arthur Wolfe and what he did , but they didn’t. It was an excuse for them to show off and network for their businesses. Everyone loved it,except me.For me, it was another test. Another stage where I had to play the part of Chloe Mackenzie, Jake Wolfe’s perfect fiancée. Rosa had prepared everything for me hours before. The gown she laid out shimmered like midnight sky, a deep-blue silk that clung to me as if it had been sewn onto my body. The neckline dipped low, daring yet elegant, transforming me from a waitress into someone who belonged in Jake’s
