CHAPTER THIRTY-NINE.Adele's work at the publishing agency was no different from what she used to do back at her first job site. She had her office and was in charge of editing and reviewing articles before they were published to the media. She loved her job and her new colleagues. They warmly welcomed her and most of them fell in love with her rich British accent. Sometimes, they asked her questions just so she could talk to them so they could hear her beautiful accent. She loved everything about the workplace and looked forward to helping them grow. Even her pay and benefits that came along with it were good.In less than no time, she was going to be able to get herself a car. Jamal once sent a car over for her, but she sent the driver back with the car, saying she didn't need anything from him and she was serious. She had no plans of ever receiving anything from him! That evening, she was frying pancakes to have for dinner when her doorbell rang. She quickly turned off the fire ben
CHAPTER FORTY.Jamal was in his study that evening, signing a few documents when he heard a knock on his office door. He wasn't in the mood to talk to or see anyone and so wanted to ignore, but the thought of that being his grandmother who had come with good news crossed his mind and he decided against his decision."Come in." He said out loud and immediately, the door creaked open. He looked up, expecting to see his grandmother, but a wave of disappointment washed through him when he saw his sister, Shannelle, walk into the office with a smile plastered on her face."Hello." She greeted calmly as she closed the door behind her and stood it.She could not remember the last time she was in that office. That was about five years ago."What do you want, Shannelle?" Jamal asked in disappointment as he returned to what he was doing."I… I just want us to talk." "I'm busy right now, I can't talk to you. Leave!" He ordered, but Shannel did not obey. Instead, she walked over to his office tab
CHAPTER FORTY-ONE."Interesting." Adele murmured to herself as she stepped out of the elevator with her eyes focused on her watch. The time read eight pm and she was just returning from work. There was so much work at the office and they all had to work overtime. The good thing was that the next day was Saturday, weekend and she did not have to go to work. All she wanted to do at that moment was go into her apartment and sleep from that time till the next morning because she was very exhausted. As she approached her door, she took out her key from her bag and swiped it on the lock for the door to open up. She stepped into the house and the first thing she did was take off her shoes and put on the fluffy slippers she always put in her little corridor before heading to the living room. When she stepped in, she froze on her tracks when she saw Jamal comfortably seated on one of her sofas in the living room. His tux jacket was resting on another sofa and he was watching a football match
CHAPTER FORTY TWO.ONE YEAR LATER."Adele!" A voice called from behind as Adele was heading towards the elevator. She immediately stopped on her tracks and turned around to see who it was. A wide smile spread on her face when she saw her colleague, Chase, walking towards her, smiling as well. Chase was a senior editor at the publishing firm himself and he was employed one month after she had been employed.Since they worked together on many projects, they had gotten quite close and many people in the firm thought they were having an affair.Chase himself had been making advances towards her, but she had done her best to keep her distance as she wanted nothing to do with him."Hey, Chase. What's good?""Everything, I guess." He replied, shrugging his shoulders as he came to a halt before her. Chase was a very cute guy, the kind of guy who was almost as beautiful as a girl and most girls in the firm threw themselves at him, but he didn't like it.He was always very neat and his outfit w
CHAPTER FORTY-THREE."Adele." The voice came through again after several minutes of silence. Adele, who was exhausted at that time, found a nearby seat and slumped on it. From the very overwhelming conversation with the doctor and now a call from Jamal. The men were definitely bent on making her lose her sanity that afternoon."Jamal." She finally whispered. "Why are you calling me?" Her voice was shaky. It had been one year since she heard from him, but he had suddenly shown up again and she had no idea what he wanted."It's been one year since we last saw or spoke to each other, Adele… don't you miss me?" His voice was calm and if Adele didn't know the man who was taking over the phone all too well, she would say his words were genuine, but knowing Jamal to be a beast who had no interest in her, she knew he was lying, she just didn't know why he was lying to her."I don't." She simply replied."I highly doubt that.""That's your problem, not mine. What do you want, Jamal?" She aske
CHAPTER FORTY-FOUR.Adele arrived at the work office where she shared with three other editors and she was shocked to see that Chase had not come to work yet. He was always the first to arrive at the office and he was always made fun of by the male colleagues. She greeted the others who were already present and walked over to her cubicle, but with her gaze focused on Chase's. She noticed it was totally empty. His laptop and desktop were gone. Paperwork and stick notes were nowhere to be found. It was as if the place wasn't occupied by any human at all."What… what happened to Chase's cubicle." She asked the girl close to her and she sighed heavily."Well, no one knows. We've been asking ourselves the same thing since we got in. Chase is an early bird, it's shocking that he isn't here already and it's even more shocking that his cubicle looks deserted. Maybe he has been fired.""Fired!" Adele screamed, getting the attention of the others."Who has been fired?" One other guy asked as he
CHAPTER FORTY-FIVE.Adele bit her lips hard as she let his words sink in her brain. He was striking every nerve in her body and getting her extremely enraged with every word he said. The only thing she could feel for him at the time was hatred. She hated the fact that he had come back to her life, she hated the fact that he had the power and connections to do whatever he wanted at any time, she hated him for ruining her life. She loathed him with every fibre in her body and if she were to set eyes on him at that moment, she would give him two solid snacks on both his left and right cheeks, then maybe her anger would subside after that. "You are nothing but a sick bastard.""I am just an unfortunate man who married a very beautiful woman. A woman who looks pleasant in the eyes of every man. The most desired woman in the world. I have to protect her at all costs, otherwise hungry lions will devour her for me before I even realise it.""The only hungry lion devouring me right now is yo
