THE REJECTION

PART ONE

Mia barely slept.

She lay on her side with the blanket pulled up to her chin and replayed it all: his stillness, the way he had looked at the window instead of at her, the careful kindness of I appreciate your honesty. It wasn't the answer she had spent three years imagining. It wasn't a no, either. She told herself she had been honest, that honesty was enough, and almost believed it.

She was at Vale International before most of the floor had turned on its lights.

"You're early," the receptionist said, smiling.

"Couldn't sleep."

"Big day?"

"Very."

In the elevator, she studied her reflection in the mirrored wall. Dark hair tied back, jacket pressed, face calm. Calm on the outside, at least. She pressed her palms flat against her skirt to keep them still and rode up to the executive floor.

Alexander's office door opened before she had decided whether to knock.

He wore a charcoal suit and a tie that sat perfectly straight, and he looked as though he hadn't slept much either. "Mia."

"Good morning, Mr. Vale. I have your schedule ready."

"Good."

She waited. He seemed about to say something more, but a pair of analysts walked past the glass, and his eyes followed them. When he looked back, whatever he had been about to say had closed behind his face. His thumb moved along the edge of his watch.

"We'll talk later. Noon, in the executive lounge. Bring the board deck."

"The lounge?"

"The executives are already meeting there at noon."

It was not an answer, but he was already walking away.

The morning dragged. She sent emails, rescheduled a dentist's appointment for one of the vice presidents, and checked the conference room door more times than she would ever admit. At eleven thirty, it finally opened, and Alexander's inner circle filed out. Among them was Gregory Harrison, one of his oldest business associates, a broad, loud man who treated every conversation as an audience and every joke as a small cruelty at someone else's expense.

"Still here, Mia?"

"I'm always here."

"Of course you are." He laughed at his own answer.

Alexander walked past without looking at either of them.

At noon, she carried the board deck down the corridor, her tablet tucked against her ribs. The executive lounge was all leather and glass, with long sofas and a bar in the corner, and a view that stretched to the river. Alexander stood at the window with his back to the room. Three men sat on the sofas. One was pouring himself a drink at noon without apology.

"So this is the famous Mia," Gregory said.

She gave him a polite smile. "Hello."

"I've heard a lot about you."

She looked at Alexander. He didn't turn around. He didn't explain.

"Should I leave?"

"No." He faced her at last. His face was smooth as glass, and when he spoke, his voice was flat in a way she had never heard from him, as if he were reading from a card. "Stay. Close the door."

She closed it. The latch clicked, very loudly.

"About last night," he said.

No one in the room moved. Gregory raised an eyebrow. "Last night?"

Heat spread up Mia's neck. Alexander kept his eyes on her. "You told me something yesterday."

"Yes."

"I've thought about it."

She swallowed. "And?"

"You misunderstood the relationship between us."

A chill went through her, quick and clean. She kept her voice level. "What do you mean?"

"You work for me. I'm your employer. You should never have confused my kindness with something else."

"I didn't confuse anything."

Gregory gave a quiet laugh. Alexander's eyes flicked toward him, then back to Mia. His thumb was pressed hard against the face of his watch, hard enough that the knuckle had gone white. She saw it, and didn't understand it, and filed it away because there was nowhere else to put it.

"You told me you love me," he said. "Did you really believe I'd have a relationship with my assistant?"

"I wasn't asking you to,"

"You should have thought about your position before you said it."

The silence was so complete that she could hear the ice settle in someone's glass. Her eyes stung. She would not let them spill. "I understand."

"I don't think you do." He came a step closer and lowered his voice, which was somehow worse. "You and I live in different worlds."

"I never said I wanted to change your world."

"Just tell her plainly, Alexander," Gregory said, bored.

Mia turned her head and looked at him. Alexander's jaw flexed.

Then he said it.

"You are a nobody, Mia."

Everything in her went still. Gregory stopped laughing.

"You work for me. That's all." He didn't blink. "You could never belong in my world."

The room seemed to shrink around her. She looked at the man whose coffee she had carried every morning, whose schedule she had guarded, for whom she had stayed late more nights than she could count. He was looking at her as if she were furniture.

"Good," he said when she didn't speak.

She nodded once. She turned and put her hand on the door.

Behind her, Gregory murmured, just loud enough, "She really thought she had a chance."

Her fingers closed around the handle. She shut her eyes for exactly one second. Then she opened the door and walked out.

"Operations," Mia said. "Entry level. Shipping schedules, vendor calls, whatever the team needs. You'll be at a desk on the open floor.""Fine.""You'll report to Daniel."Alexander went still."Daniel Reyes?""He's a team lead now."Alexander looked at the floor, then back up. "Page nine," he said."Excuse me?""The last time I spoke to him at Vale, I told him he had until noon. He had the wrong column on page nine.""He remembers.""He told you?""He told me before he said yes to this." She sat down again. "Daniel asked if he could work with you. I told him he didn't have to. He said he wanted to."Alexander rubbed the side of his thumb against the edge of his wrist, where his watch used to be. It was a habit she had noticed years ago. Now there was nothing there, and his thumb kept moving anyway."Why would he?" he asked."You'd have to ask him.""I'm asking you. Why are you doing this?""I'm not doing it for you.""Then who?""Me."He waited for more. She didn't give it."Here's h

THE INTERVIEW Part OneEthan knocked once and opened the door."Mia. He's here."Mia kept her eyes on the paper in front of her. She had read the same line four times."Send him in."Ethan didn't move. "I can stay.""I know you can.""I'd like to."This time she looked up. "Ethan. It's fine."He held her eyes a second longer. Then he stepped aside.Alexander walked in. He still walked the same way, back straight, like the room was already his. But the suit was old, and it hung a little loose on him. He stopped in front of the desk and waited.Ethan shut the door behind him. Slowly."Ms. Carter," Alexander said.Mia almost smiled. In three years he had never said her name like that. Back then he said "Mia" when he needed something, and nothing at all when he didn't."Sit down, Mr. Vale."He sat.She picked up his résumé. One page. It looked like it had been written by someone who never needed one."This is short.""I've never applied for a job.""Never?""My father gave me my first of

It took six weeks for everything to go.The cars were auctioned first, then the jet, then the art, one piece at a time, each sale announced in a polite email. The board formally removed him. The investigators interviewed him four times, each time with the same patient face. His lawyer stopped saying when this is resolved and started saying if. He moved from the penthouse to a suite, from the suite to a room, from the room to a smaller room in a hotel off Eighth Avenue, where the carpet smelled faintly of other people's cigarettes. He applied for jobs. Every firm he had ever done business with sent the same careful reply. We're sorry. We can't get involved. A man whose hand he had shaken at a hundred dinners declined to take his call and had his secretary say he was in a meeting. His name, it turned out, was now a thing people crossed the street to avoid.Pryce could not be found. The Singapore accounts led nowhere. Someone had built the trap carefully, and Alexander could feel the wal

THE FALLPart OneThe phone rang at six in the morning, and Alexander almost let it go.His bedroom was still dark, the curtains drawn. It rang again. He reached for it blindly. "Hello?""Mr. Vale, you need to come to the office." It was his head of security, and his voice sounded wrong. "There's a problem.""What kind of problem?""I think you'd better see it yourself."He dressed quickly. On the way down in the elevator he called Julian Pryce, because the numbers were Pryce's business and Pryce would know. The call went straight to a recorded message: this number is no longer in service. He tried again. Same voice, same flat tone. By the time his car reached Vale Tower he had a vague, unfamiliar tightness in his chest that took him a moment to name.It was uncertainty. He hadn't felt it in years. The lobby was full. Employees stood in clusters, whispering, phones pressed to their ears, and when he walked in, the whispering died as though someone had turned off a tap. He walked towar

That afternoon, Mia was alone in her office, reading a contract she had already read twice, when Ethan appeared again."You have a visitor. Victoria Sterling."She looked up. For a second, nothing in her moved. "Send her in.""You're sure?""I'm sure."Victoria came in like a woman entering a room she already owned: tall, blonde, in a pale silk dress that cost more than Mia's first month of rent had. She smiled. "Mia. It's been a long time.""Victoria."She looked around the office, at the windows, the brass monogram, the long walnut desk. "You've done well.""Thank you.""I suppose leaving Vale International worked out for you.""It did."Victoria sat down without being asked. "You were very devoted to him. I remember that.""I was devoted to my work.""Of course." The smile didn't move. Something about the way she said it made the back of Mia's neck prickle. "I wanted to see you, that's all. I'm curious about the people who were close to Alexander.""Why?""We're to be married. A wo

THREE YEARS LATERPart OneThree years later, the woman who used to stand outside Alexander Vale's door waiting for instructions had a door of her own.It was glass, like his had been, and behind it Mia Carter stood at a wall of windows with her arms crossed, watching Manhattan wake. Carter & Co. took up an entire floor of a building she could once only afford to look at from the sidewalk. Behind her desk, in brushed brass, hung the company's monogram, a tall C she had chosen herself and paid for with the first real profit she ever made. Her dark-brown hair fell loose over a cream blouse. She no longer dressed to be overlooked."You're supposed to be in the conference room."Ethan Reed stood in the doorway, a mug in one hand and an easy smile on his face. He was tall and sunburned from a weekend she hadn't taken, with the kind of calm that made investors relax the second he walked into a room."I'm early," she said."You're always early. I came to make sure you'd slept.""I slept.""M
