Elena’s pov

I almost cancelled the appointment twice before noon.

The first time was while I was still in bed, staring at the confirmation email on my phone.

The second time was on the train, thumb hovering over the cancel link. Both times I closed the screen and kept going. By the time I reached the small brick building near the park, my hands were cold and my jaw ached from holding it too tight.

The waiting room was quiet. Soft chairs. A low table with magazines no one had touched.

I gave my

Elena’s povThe room was already half full when we arrived. Low lighting. A long table with wine glasses and a cheese plate that looked exactly as unimpressive as Daniel had promised. People stood in small clusters, talking in the easy, slightly loud way that came with networking events.Daniel glanced at me near the entrance. “Still good?”“Still good,” I said. “For now.”“If that changes, we leave. No discussion.”“I know.”We moved into the room. Daniel didn’t steer me or announce me. He simply walked at my pace and let me choose where to stop. The first few minutes were the hardest. My shoulders stayed tight. I scanned faces out of habit, half expecting someone who might recognize my name from the old public story. No one did.A woman in a gray blazer approached us with a polite smile. “Daniel. You actually came.”&

Elena’s povWe were leaving the library on Thursday when Daniel stopped near the door and turned to me.“Can I ask you something without it sounding like more than it is?”I adjusted the strap of my bag. “You can ask.”“There’s a small industry mixer next Wednesday. Architecture and planning people, mostly. Low-key. Bad wine.A few useful conversations if you can tolerate the rest. I usually go for an hour and leave.” He paused. “You’re welcome to come with me. No pressure. No expectations. Just an open invitation.”The offer sat between us for a second longer than I expected.“A mixer,” I said.“Yes. The kind where people stand in small groups and pretend the cheese plate is better than it is. You don’t have to talk to anyone you don’t want to. You can leave whenever you want. I just thought… you’ve been saying th

Elena’s povI was in the kitchen helping Mom unload groceries when the sound stopped me cold.Someone in the building’s hallway laughed, a short, low, controlled sound that cut cleanly through the thin walls. It wasn’t loud. It wasn’t even close. But it was enough. The bag of apples slipped from my hands and hit the floor.Mom turned quickly. “Elena?”I couldn’t answer right away. The kitchen was still the kitchen. The light was still ordinary. But for a few seconds I was back in the penthouse living room, still in the wedding dress, watching Alexander close the black folder with that same controlled finality. His voice from that night rose up without permission.I don’t need you to explain away clear evidence. This marriage is finished.I pressed my palm against the counter and forced a slow breath in.Mom stepped closer. “What is it?”&ldqu

Elena’s povWe were packing up at the library when Daniel glanced at the clock.“It’s later than I thought,” he said. “You need to catch the early train?”I looked at the time. The train I usually took was in twelve minutes. The next one was nearly an hour later.“I was planning to,” I said. Then I surprised myself. “But I don’t have to. Not tonight.”He raised an eyebrow slightly. “You sure?”“Yes. I can take the later one.”“All right.” He sat back down. “Want to stay here, or should we move somewhere with better chairs?”“Here is fine. It’s quiet.”We settled again at the same table. The library had emptied out even more. Only a few people remained near the front. The quiet between us felt different than usual, less like a pause and more like something we had chosen to keep.

Elena’s povI was packing up at my desk when my phone rang with a number I almost recognized. Marcus Voss. I stared at the screen for a second, then answered.“Elena.”“Marcus.” My voice stayed even. “I thought we were done with these calls.”“This isn’t about checking on you.” He sounded tired. “I need to ask you something directly, and then I’ll leave it alone.”I sat back down. “What is it?”“The folder from that night. The clinic form. The hotel records. The messages. Did Alexander ever have any of it independently verified? Before he used it. Or after.”The question landed harder than I expected. “Why are you asking me that?”“Because I asked him the same thing this morning. He dismissed it. Said the documents were consistent and he didn’t need a second opinion. But the way he shut it down didn&rsqu

Elena’s povWe were at the café near the library again, halfway through our usual order, when the door opened and a woman in a dark coat walked straight toward our table.Daniel looked up and exhaled. “Of course.”The woman stopped beside us, one eyebrow raised. She had the same dark hair as Daniel and the same direct way of looking at people.“You didn’t answer my texts,” she said to him.“I was working.”“You’re always working.” Her gaze shifted to me, curious but not unfriendly. “And you must be Elena.”I blinked. “I am.”“Isabella. His sister.” She pulled out the empty chair and sat without waiting for an invitation. “He’s mentioned you. Not in detail. Just enough that I decided to come see for myself.”Daniel gave her a flat look. “You’re impossible.”“I’
