LENA’S POV

“Have you eaten today?” Ethan’s voice comes from behind me while I’m standing in the kitchen, staring into the fridge like something might jump out and surprise me. The question is normal. Almost casual. That’s why it unsettles me.

“I will,” I say, closing the door. “I’m just… thinking.” He nods once, accepting that answer without pushing. He’s been doing that more lately letting silences exist without filling them. It makes him easier to be around.

Edward isn’t home yet. The house feels suspended because of it, like everything is waiting for his return.

I move to the counter and start slicing tomatoes even though I’m not hungry. My hands are steady, but my chest feels tight, like something is sitting there that doesn’t belong.

“You don’t have to cook,” Ethan says. “Staff will handle it.” “I know,” I respond. “I want to.” That gets a look from him. Not disapproval. Just mild curiosity. “Alright,” he says. “I’ll be nearby.”

He steps back, giving me space, but he doesn’t leave the room. I can feel him there quiet, present, grounded. It helps more than I want to admit.

Edward walks into the house shortly after. “Lena, come to my study now” I quickly left all I was doing and rushed after him to his study.

“I am expecting very important people tomorrow in this house I need you to on your best behavior well you know what happens when you disobey me.” He said with a tone that makes me know how serious this is. “That will be all.”

Immediately I left his study Edward picked up his phone to answer a call, pacing slowly, jacket off, sleeves rolled up. He holds up one finger when he sees me wait. His attention is elsewhere.

“no,” Edward says into the phone, voice calm, irritated. “That wasn’t the agreement.” He turns slightly, back half-facing me. “I don’t care how it looks,” he continues. “The man was warned. Multiple times. My heart starts to beat faster. “Yes. Her father.” The words hit before I can stop them. I don’t move. I don’t breathe. Edward keeps talking. “I said increase the dosage. Slowly. You rushed it.”

My ears start ringing. “No, don’t insult me. It worked. He died quietly. Doctors saw what they expected to see.” My knees feel weak. Edward sighs. “Illness is very convenient when people refuse to cooperate.” The room tilts.

“He thought hiding behind morality would save him,” Edward continues. “He was wrong.” I grip the edge of the desk to keep myself upright.

“Listen to me,” Edward says sharply into the phone. “This conversation is finished. Clean it up and don’t let it resurface.” He ends the call and turns.

I try to stable myself and not make any noise as I quietly leave the spot where I stood listening to him. I was shaking, my whole body was shaking, I took few steps and Ethan was next to me.

“Are you okay?” he asks quietly. I open my mouth. Nothing comes out. He doesn’t touch me. Doesn’t crowd me. Just waits. “I need air,” I say finally.

He nods. “Garden or terrace?” “Terrace.” We walk in silence. Every step feels unreal. The night air hits my face and I grip the railing hard. “He killed him,” I whisper.

Ethan doesn’t respond immediately. “Edward,” I say. “He killed my father.” Ethan’s posture changes not dramatically, but I feel it. Like a wire pulled tight. “How did you hear?” he asks.

I stare straight ahead. “He was on the phone. He didn’t know I was there.” Ethan exhales slowly through his nose. “What exactly did he say?” he asks. I repeat it. Every word I can remember. The dosage. The illness. The way he said it like it was a scheduling error. When I was done, my throat burns.

“That’s confirmation,” Ethan says quietly. The certainty in his voice makes my stomach twist.

“You’re not surprised,” I say. “No,” he replies honestly. “But I was hoping to be wrong.” I laugh once, broken. “I married my father’s murderer.”Ethan turns to face me fully now.

“You didn’t know,” he says. “That doesn’t change the fact that I sleep next to him.” Silence stretches between us. “You need to be careful,” Ethan says. “From this moment on.” “I have been careful,” I snap. “It didn’t save him.”

“That’s not what I meant,” he replies evenly. “You can’t let him know you know “I won’t.” “You can’t even let him suspect,” he continues. “Edward doesn’t forgive awareness. I close my eyes.

“Everything makes sense now,” I whisper. “The timing. How fast he appeared. How prepared he was.” Ethan doesn’t interrupt. “He wasn’t saving me,” I say. “He was finishing something.”

“Yes,” Ethan says. My hands start shaking again, but this time I don’t fight it. “I don’t know how to live with this,” I say. “You don’t,” he replies. “Not yet.” I open my eyes and look at him. “What does that mean?” “It means you survive first,” he says. “Feel later.”

I nod slowly. We stand there longer than we should. Finally, I straighten my shoulders. “He can never know,” I say. Ethan meets my eyes. “He won’t. As long as you don’t change.” “I’ve already changed. “Yes,” Ethan says quietly. “Internally.” That scares me more than anything.

Edward’s voice echoes faintly from inside the house. He’s laughing now. Relaxed. I look back at the lights, the windows, the place that has been my cage.

“I can’t stay here forever,” I say. Ethan doesn’t respond right away. When he does, his voice is careful. “Then you don’t rush. I nod. Not yet. But someday. I turn toward the door. “We should go back.” Ethan gestures for me to walk first.

As we step inside, I feel something settle inside me a combination of both grief and rage.

  • THE BODYGUARD MY HUSBAND HIRED FOR ME    CHAPTER TWELVE

ETHAN’S POVI couldn’t take it anymore. Two days. Two whole days of pretending Lena didn’t exist. Two days of watching her walk around the mansion quietly, carefully, like a shadow of herself. Two days of seeing the bruises on her face slowly fade while the sadness in her eyes stayed the same. And it was hurting me every second of it.I stood in the security room, staring at the camera that showed the hallway leading to her bedroom. She had just gone inside. Edward was still at work. Lewis was outside supervising the gate. It was the safest moment I was going to get. My chest tightened. I didn’t think again. I walked out.Her door was slightly open. I knocked softly. “Lena”. Then her voice came out quietly. “Come in.” I pushed the door open and stepped inside. She was sitting on the bed, reading something on her phone, but she looked up immediately when she saw me. Her expression changed. Surprise. Pain. Guarded emotion.“You came,” she said softly. The words hit me harder than anythi

  • THE BODYGUARD MY HUSBAND HIRED FOR ME    CHAPTER ELEVEN

LENA’S POVThe Paris trip ended too quickly. Not in a good way. In the kind of way where everything felt unfinished, broken, and heavy. No closure. No peace. No healing. Just silence. Cold, painful silence. We were heading back home. The private jet was already waiting at the airport, engines humming softly like nothing had changed in the world. But everything had changed. At least for me and Ethan.Edward walked ahead of us, speaking to Lewis about business schedules and meetings. Like Paris had been nothing more than a business stop. Like the bruises on my body didn’t exist. Like the tension between everyone didn’t matter.I walked behind them slowly, my sunglasses covering the fading bruise under my eye. My ribs still hurt. My arm still ached. But what hurt the most was the silence. Ethan walked a few steps ahead of me. Not looking back. Not slowing down. Not waiting. Just walking like I didn’t exist. Like we were strangers. Like Paris never happened. Like our fight never happened.

  • THE BODYGUARD MY HUSBAND HIRED FOR ME    CHAPTER TEN

LENA’S POVI woke up in pain. Not the normal pain I had gotten used to. This one was deeper. Heavier. My ribs ached every time I breathed. My arm throbbed. My face felt swollen, tight, like my skin didn’t belong to me anymore. For a moment, I didn’t move. Edward was still asleep beside me, lying peacefully like nothing had happened. Like he hadn’t nearly broken me the night before.I slowly slipped out of the bed, careful not to make a sound and walked into the bathroom. The mirror almost made me scream. Bruises covered my face. Dark purple under my eye. A cut on my lip. Finger marks on my arm. Red and blue patches on my shoulder and collarbone. Tears filled my eyes before I could stop them. I gripped the sink tightly, trying to stay calm. Trying not to break. But the pain wasn’t just physical. It was deeper than that. Because Ethan didn’t come. He saw me. He saw everything. And he walked away. My chest tightened painfully.I washed my face slowly, trying to hide the swelling with mak

  • THE BODYGUARD MY HUSBAND HIRED FOR ME    CHAPTER NINE

LENA’S POVParis looked beautiful at night. Cold air. Golden lights. Quiet streets. Soft music drifting from restaurants and passing cars. It should have felt amazing. Instead, it felt like a cage made of glass.I stood in front of the hotel mirror, adjusting the black dress Edward had chosen for me. It hugged my body perfectly, elegant and expensive, the kind of dress women dreamed about wearing in Paris. But my hands were shaking.Edward walked out of the bathroom, fixing his cufflinks. He stopped when he saw me. His eyes moved slowly over my body. Assessing. Possessing. “You look good,” he said calmly. “Thank you.”He stepped closer, standing behind me in the mirror. His hand rested on my waist. “You represent me tonight.” “Yes.” “You embarrass me, and you will regret it.” My chest tightened. “I understand.” He smiled faintly. “Good.”The dinner was worse than I expected. Rich men. Powerful men. Expensive suits and dangerous smiles. They sat around a long table in a private restaur

  • THE BODYGUARD MY HUSBAND HIRED FOR ME    CHAPTER EIGHT

LENA’S POVI knew something was wrong the moment Edward called me into his study. He never called me in the afternoon unless it was important. Or dangerous.I stood in front of his desk, my fingers locked together, trying to look calm while my heart beat unevenly in my chest.Edward looked up from the file in his hand. “You’re traveling with me.” The words hit me before I could process them. “Traveling?” I repeated quietly. “Yes.”He leaned back in his chair, studying me. “We are going to Paris for three days.” Paris. My stomach tightened instantly. Paris sounded beautiful. Romantic. Free. But with Edward, it sounded like a prison in another country. “When?” I asked softly. “Tomorrow morning.” The fear came immediately. So fast it almost made me dizzy. “Is there a problem?” Edward asked calmly. “No,” I said quickly. Too quickly. His eyes narrowed slightly. “You don’t sound excited.” I forced a small smile. “I am. I’ve just never traveled before.” That part was true. Edward watched me

  • THE BODYGUARD MY HUSBAND HIRED FOR ME    CHAPTER SEVEN

LENA’S POVThe first time I noticed him watching me, I was pouring tea. Not just looking. Watching. Studying.Lewis stood near the window, arms behind his back like every other guard in the house, but his eyes followed every movement I made. The way I picked up the cup. The way I stirred the tea. The way my hands slightly trembled. I felt it in my chest. This man was not here for security. He was here for me.I forced myself to keep moving normally, lifting the cup to my lips and taking a slow sip. Calm. Controlled. Not suspicious. From the corner of my eye, I saw Ethan enter the room. He didn’t look at me. Not even once. He walked past me like I didn’t exist and positioned himself near the wall. Professional. Distant. Cold. It hurt more than I expected. But I understood. Lewis was watching. Always watching.Edward walked in seconds later, his presence immediately tightening the air. “Good morning,” he said calmly. “Good morning,” I replied softly. His eyes moved between me, Ethan and
