Hey Ama

Ama's pov:

Hey! My name is Ama.

I'm 18 years old, and I just became a senior at Westbrook High School.

I have an older brother named George, and his best friend, Jackson, has been part of our lives since childhood. Those two are practically inseparable. Wherever George goes, Jackson is never too far behind.

Jackson is always showing up at our house, looking for my brother. They do everything together, from hanging out to going on random adventures. Sometimes, I wonder if Jackson even has a home of his own because he practically lives at ours.

Unfortunately, that means I'm stuck with him.

And trust me, being around Jackson is a full-time headache.

He's always been a jerk. Messing with my hair, stealing things from my hands, making annoying comments, and finding new ways to get on my nerves are some of his favorite hobbies. He acts like annoying me is his personal mission, and the worst part is how much he enjoys it.

Honestly, I hate him for it.

But somehow, everyone else seems to adore him.

Jackson is one of the most popular guys at Westbrook High. He's a racer, ridiculously handsome, and has that effortless confidence that makes girls lose their minds. His messy hair, charming smile, and those stupidly attractive eyes are enough to make half the school forget how to behave whenever he walks by.

Girls practically throw themselves at him, and he knows exactly how much attention he gets.

Every girl wants Jackson.

Every single one of them.

Except me.

I know better than to fall for his pretty face and annoying charm.

And I intend to keep it that way.

The school cafeteria was unusually crowded that afternoon. Students filled almost every table, laughing, gossiping, and arguing over the last pieces of pizza.

Bella and I had managed to grab two seats near the windows. I was busy enjoying my chocolate milkshake while she scrolled through her phone.

“Hey, look at this, Allison is so hot.....she said, turning her screen toward me.

“Bella, I actually don't give a rat ass about Allison and her Shitty face".

“Your loss.”

I rolled my eyes and took another sip.

“BOOO!”

I jumped so hard that my milkshake splashed all over the front of my dress.

“OH MY GOD!”

I stared at the mess in disbelief.

Behind me, Jackson was practically dying of laughter. He bent forward, shaking his shoulders as if he'd just witnessed the funniest thing in the world.

“You should have seen your face!” he wheezed. him

I slowly turned toward him.

“You absolute idiot!”

That only made him laugh harder.

“You ruined my dress, Jackson!”

He glanced at the stain, then back at me, wearing that infuriating grin I wanted to wipe off his face.

“Did I?”

“Jackson! Stop!”

I tried to pull away, but he caught my wrists and pinned my hands against the wall.

“Let go of me!”

I kicked at the air, but he was stronger.

“Say please,” he demanded, staring straight into my eyes.

I rolled mine. “Please!” I spat.

He released me, blew me a kiss, and walked away like he hadn't just ruined my morning.

God, I hate this boy.

“He gets on my nerves!” I complained to Bella, who had been watching the whole drama while sipping her milkshake.

“Girl, he's so strong,” she said. “It's kind of hot how easily he lifted you.”

“Eww!” I made a disgusted face.

“What?” Bella asked innocently.

“Eww!”

“Every girl would die to have Jackson touch her.”

“Which is exactly why he's so annoying. He's a flirt who thinks every girl wants him. What a moron,” I muttered.

Bella smiled mischievously.

“Alright, Cleopatra. If Jackson isn't your type, then who is? Billie Hart?”

“What? douche face Billie?Girl, bye!”

My mother did not yell, which was how I knew it was serious."Sit," she said, pointing at the kitchen table with her spatula. It was seven in the morning. Jackson was parked at one end in his chair with a blanket over his lap, looking like a boy awaiting sentencing. George sat beside him, suddenly fascinated by his cereal. Evelyn had been invited in for coffee at midnight and had slept in our guest room. She now sat very straight with both hands around a mug."Nobody is in trouble," Mom said, in the voice of someone who had decided exactly how much trouble everyone was in. "But I am going to ask some questions, and you are going to answer them honestly. Jackson first.""Yes, ma'am.""Did you tell my daughter to leave you yesterday?"Jackson swallowed. "Yes, ma'am.""Did you mean it?""No, ma'am.""Then why say it?""Because I was scared she'd leave first."Mom studied him for a long moment. Her face didn't soften, exactly. It just stopped being a wall."You have eaten at this table si

  • Highschool sweetheart   Come and get Me

I went down in my socks, with a hoodie over my pajamas and my heart in my throat. The house was dark. Mom and Dad's door was shut, and a thin line of light showed under George's. I eased the front door open and stepped onto the porch, and the night air bit through my sleeves. The car at the curb was Evelyn's rental. She sat behind the wheel with both hands in her lap, looking straight ahead, the way people do when they are trying very hard not to listen. In the passenger seat, Jackson had already opened his door. The wheelchair was folded in the back, and he was half out, one hand on the frame, the other gripping the roof of the car."Don't," I said, crossing the lawn fast. "Stay in the seat.""I wanted to come to you.""You can't walk.""I know." His mouth twisted. "That's why I'm saying it. I couldn't come to you. I had to be driven, like a package."I stopped in front of him. Up close, he looked terrible. His eyes were swollen, his shirt was buttoned wrong, and a fresh scrape ran a

  • Highschool sweetheart   The worst Thing He Could Say

I didn't go back on Saturday.I told George I had a headache, and he didn't push. He had a trophy for second place sitting on his desk and a grin he couldn't hide, and for once I let him have the house's good mood without dragging mine into it.On Sunday, Mum asked why Jackson hadn't been over for dinner in a week."He's busy," I said."With what?""Recovering."She gave me a long look over the rim of her tea. "That boy has never been too busy for my cooking. Something's wrong.""Nothing's wrong.""Ama.""Mum, I'm fine."She let it go, the way she did when she knew she'd get the truth later. I went upstairs and lay on my bed and stared at the ceiling, replaying Friday night. *It's already over.* The way he'd said it, so calm, as if he'd practiced.I had told him he didn't get to decide. But I'd walked out anyway, and that felt a lot like letting him.---On Monday, I was crossing the quad when I heard it."Did you hear? Jackson's not even coming back for the final.""Because of the le

  • Highschool sweetheart   Without Him

The semi-final went ahead without Jackson, and nobody had the decency to pretend it wouldn't.By Friday, the whole school was talking about it. Posters hung in the corridors, the race club sold wristbands at lunch, and a banner across the cafeteria read **GO WESTBROOK**. Whoever finished in the top three would qualify for the Grand Prix final. Nobody mentioned that the boy who had won every race that season was sitting in a conservatory, learning to stand."It's rude," Bella said, tearing a poster off her locker door and stuffing it in her bag. "Like he died.""He didn't die.""I know. That's why it's rude."I let that sit. I had arrived at school braced for Allison, because of Bella's text, and had spent the first two periods checking every corner. In the end she found me at the water fountain, and I almost dropped my bottle. She looked tired. No flowers, no phone, no audience. Just a girl in a school blazer with her arms folded across her chest."You wanted me?" I asked."I wanted t

  • Highschool sweetheart   What the Threat Cost

For a long moment, neither of us moved."Say that again," I said.Jackson kept his eyes shut. His hand was still over mine on his arm, damp and trembling. "He said if I didn't end it, he'd make sure your family lost everything.""Your dad said that.""Yes.""Your *dad*, who sat in my kitchen last Christmas and ate my mother's jollof.""I know."I pulled my hand away. The conservatory suddenly felt too bright, the glass walls too thin. "And you believed him?""Ama, you didn't hear how he said it." He opened his eyes. They were red-rimmed and exhausted. "He wasn't angry. He was calm. That's what scared me. It was the same voice he used when he told Mum that if she fought him, she'd see me on supervised weekends."I stood very still."I'd heard that story my whole life," he went on. "How he took everything from her without raising his voice. And I thought, he'll do it to George. To your parents. To you. I didn't know if he could, but I knew he'd try, and I couldn't stand being the reason

  • Highschool sweetheart   Say it like you Mean It

Monday morning, the gates of Westbrook High were crowded, and for once nobody was looking at me.They were looking at the black sedan idling at the curb, and at the girl climbing out of the back seat with a bouquet of white roses and a set of crutches she clearly didn't need.Allison.She wore a pale blue dress, her hair curled, her makeup perfect again. Her three-day suspension was over, and she had walked back into school like someone entering a stage. Phones were already rising around her."Oh no," Bella breathed beside me. "She's doing a bit.""Those crutches aren't hers.""They're a *prop*."Allison planted herself in the middle of the path, the roses against her chest, and waited until enough people had stopped to watch. Then she turned her head, found me, and smiled."Ama," she called. "Can I talk to you?"My stomach dropped. I had thought we'd finished in the corridor. She had said she wouldn't come after me again."Don't," Bella murmured. "It's a trap.""I know.""Then why ar
