Chapter Six: THE PRICE OF FAILURE

Raymond couldn't lift his chin.

His eyes were locked onto the edge of the dark wool rug beneath his feet. The silence in the massive corner office didn't just feel empty; it felt heavy, pressing down on his shoulders until his posture cracked.

At the far edge of the room, Ace Romano remained perfectly still, looking out through the floor-to-ceiling glass at the fog-shrouded skyline. His hands were tucked casually into his trouser pockets. He didn't acknowledge the heavy door clicking shut. He didn't acknowledge the ragged sound of Raymond’s uneven breathing.

A minute stretched into two. The only sound in the entire top-floor suite was the faint, rhythmic ticking of a minimalist black steel clock on the wall.

Raymond felt a bead of sweat break at his hairline, tracking slowly down his temple. He didn't dare lift a hand to wipe it away.

Finally, Ace turned around.

This was the first time Raymond had looked directly at him in months, and the impact was immediate. Ace wasn't striking because of conventional good looks; he was striking because he looked lethal. His presence was entirely dangerous before it was anything else. Dark, piercing eyes sat beneath a sharp, aristocratic brow. His charcoal three-piece suit was immaculate, completely free of creases, and the platinum watch on his left wrist cost more than Raymond’s entire yearly salary.

His face held no anger. No malice. It held absolutely nothing at all.

Ace walked smoothly toward his massive marble desk, but he didn't sit down. He simply stood behind it, leaning forward slightly to rest his fingertips flat against the dark stone.

He didn't ask what happened. He didn't demand an explanation.

Instead, he spoke in a quiet, low register that made the hairs on Raymond's arms stand up.

“Tell me something I don’t already know.”

The words hit Raymond like a physical blow. His stomach dropped into a bottomless void. He knows. He already knows everything.

“Sir...” Raymond’s voice cracked, dry and hollow. He swallowed hard, trying to force moisture back into his throat. “I... I apologize. The logistics... the security detail we hired in the southern sector, they—they lost tracking. The cargo never arrived at the warehouse. The entire shipment... it’s completely gone.”

Ace didn't blink. He just watched him, expressionless, letting Raymond choke on his own desperation.

“I just need time, Mr. Romano,” Raymond pleaded, his hands trembling openly now. “A few weeks. Ten days. I’ll hire a private recovery team. I will track down the breach myself. I promise you, I will fix this. I will get it back.”

Ace didn't yell. He didn't slam his hand on the desk.

Instead, he walked out from behind the marble structure. He moved with a slow, deliberate stride, his leather dress shoes making a crisp, terrifying click against the polished floorboards with every step.

Click.

Click.

Raymond’s chest heaved. He felt an instinctual urge to step backward, to run, to flee the room, but his feet were entirely glued to the floor.

Ace stopped exactly two feet away. He was taller, broader, completely blocking out the morning light from the windows. Raymond was entirely trapped in his shadow.

“Do you know why I chose you for this sector, Raymond?” Ace asked quietly.

Raymond's lips parted, but no sound came out. He shook his head entirely in silence.

“Because I believed you were competent,” Ace said, his tone perfectly conversational. He paused, letting the word hang in the air like a noose. “Apparently, I overestimated you.”

The quiet delivery of the line hurt infinitely worse than a scream. It was a cold, absolute dismissal of Raymond's entire worth.

“Do you have any concept of what that shipment was valued at?” Ace asked.

“I... I know it was substantial, sir,” Raymond whispered, staring at Ace’s silk tie.

“Four hundred and eighty million,” Ace murmured softly. “Before import tariffs. You lost a half-billion-dollar asset in a single afternoon.”

Raymond’s knees buckled. He actually stumbled half a step back, the sheer weight of the number suffocating him. A half-billion dollars. He couldn't pay that back in ten lifetimes. His family name, his assets, his life—everything was forfeit.

“Recover it,” Ace commanded smoothly.

Raymond looked up, his eyes wide with absolute panic. “But—Mr. Romano, I don’t even know who took it yet! The tracking array was completely fried from the inside. I don’t have the resources to—”

“You have seventy-two hours,” Ace interrupted, his voice dropping an octave, razor-sharp and final.

The last bit of color drained entirely from Raymond’s face. Seventy-two hours was an impossibility. It was a death sentence.

The pressure finally broke him. Raymond dropped heavily to his knees right there on the dark rug, his hands coming up in a desperate, humiliating gesture of entreaty.

“Please, sir,” Raymond begged, tears of pure terror finally burning his eyes. “Please. Seventy-two hours is impossible. They’ll liquidate me. The board will strip everything. My family... we’ll lose the house, the standing, everything. I’ll go to federal prison. Please, have mercy. Give me a week. Just one week.”

Ace looked down at the grown man grovelling at his feet. His expression didn't soften by a fraction. He looked at Raymond the way an analytical scientist looks at a flawed data point.

“There is another option,” Ace said quietly.

Raymond froze. He blinked through his tears, looking up with a sudden, desperate surge of hope. Across the room, the tension shifted, stretching thin as the bait was laid out.

Ace didn't look at him as he turned and walked back to his desk. He reached down, opened a slim leather folder resting on the marble, and pulled out a single glossy sheet of paper.

He didn't hand it to Raymond. He simply slid it across the smooth black marble, letting it spin to a stop right at the edge.

It was a photograph.

Raymond’s breathing stopped completely.

It wasn't a corporate file photo. It was a candid shot taken from a distance. Alisha. She was walking out of a café, her hair catching the sunlight, a faint, genuine smile on her lips, completely oblivious to the camera lens tracking her.

Ace looked down at the photograph. His eyes traced the lines of her face with a cold, terrifyingly clinical focus.

“Your sister,” Ace stated smoothly.

Raymond’s heart stopped. The air in his lungs turned to pure ice. The absolute dread that filled him now made the half-billion-dollar debt feel like nothing.

Ace slowly raised his head, his dark eyes locking onto Raymond’s terrified gaze with absolute, unyielding power.

“Marry her to me.”

Raymond stared at him.

For one long second, he genuinely wondered if he had misheard.

“…What?”

His voice was barely a whisper.

Ace didn’t repeat himself.

He didn’t need to.

The silence confirmed everything.

Raymond’s lungs refused to expand. The photograph on the black marble desk seemed to burn through the glossy paper, the image of Alisha’s smiling face a stark, agonizing contrast to the absolute darkness closing in on the room. Raymond’s knees remained pressed into the rug. He couldn't move. He couldn't breathe. “Why...” Raymond’s voice was barely a rasp, a broken sound scraped from the back of his throat. “Why... my sister?” Ace didn't answer immediately. He turned smoothly on his heel and walked back toward the floor-to-ceiling glass, his long, dark silhouette cutting against the pale morning light. He slipped his hands back into his trousers pockets, looking out over the city as if the man groveling on his floor didn't exist. “That’s not your concern,” Ace said calmly. The sheer coldness of the response snapped something inside Raymond. The panic mutated into a desperate, reckless surge of protective instinct. He forced himself up from his knees, his hands clenching into

  • THE BRIDE HE SWORE TO DESTROY    CHAPTER 5: THE CALM BEFORE JUDGEMENT

No one spoke. Twenty-two senior executives occupied the main boardroom on the top floor of Romano Tower. Twenty-one of them explicitly avoided making eye contact with the man sitting at the head of the long black marble table. Floor-to-ceiling glass wrapped around three sides of the room, looking down on the vast, sprawling metropolis below. Through the pane, on the private rooftop pad directly adjacent to the glass, his sleek matte-black helicopter rested in silence, its rotors still. Ace Romano slowly turned another page of the leather-bound financial dossier resting in front of him. Ace didn't rush. His gaze lingered on a single figure buried halfway down the page. Without looking up, he circled it once with his fountain pen, the nib giving a sharp, dry scratch against the stillness of the room. The silence that followed was heavier than any screamed argument, thicker than any loud threat. Near the middle of the table, a junior vice president adjusted his tie. The silk fabric

  • THE BRIDE HE SWORE TO DESTROY    CHAPTER 4: THE SETUP

The Glass Citadel showed no signs of slowing down, even as the illuminated clock high above the grand staircase drifted past midnight. Downstairs in the main ballroom, the atmosphere remained electric. The heavy, rhythmic bass from the sound system vibrated right up through the polished marble floorboards, carrying with it the ambient hum of a crowd thoroughly enjoying themselves. Chilled champagne was still being poured liberally by attentive waitstaff in sleek black vests, and laughter echoed across every corner of the crowded room. Joe was right in the middle of it all, moving through the space with the natural ease of someone who owned the world. He glided effortlessly from one group to another, offering firm handshakes to senior business associates, sharing quiet jokes with old college friends, and effortlessly keeping the energy of the party alive. Near the center bar, he paused when he spotted Raymond. Joe stepped over, clapping a friendly hand on his future brother-in-law's

The applause inside the Glass Citadel echoed softly through the grand hall, but to Alisha Hart, the whole world felt deliciously light, warm, and utterly magical. Champagne flowed like water, glittering beneath the crystal chandeliers hanging from the high glass ceiling. Guests pressed in around them from every corner of the room, beaming brightly as they showered the newly engaged couple with overwhelming congratulations. “You two are absolute relationship goals,” one of their mutual friends teased, raising a flute toward them. Another guest laughed, shaking his head. “Seriously, we’ve been waiting three whole years for this proposal! It’s about time, Joe!” Alisha felt a sudden, giddy rush of warmth hit her cheeks, her skin flushing a bright rosy pink. Laughing shyly, she hid her face against the soft, luxurious fabric of Joe’s tailored suit jacket, breathing in the familiar, comforting scent of his cologne. Joe chuckled, wrapping a protective arm firmly around her waist, pulling

The Night Earlier… Unlike the nightmare that awaited her, Alisha Hart woke that morning believing life couldn’t get any better. Tonight was Joe’s birthday. And if her heart was right… It would also be the night he finally proposed. “Baby girl, how does my makeup look?” Alisha struck a playful pose, beaming into her phone screen. “Did I choose the right color of lipstick?” On the other end of the video call, Ella rolled her eyes dramatically. “Girl, you’ve asked me that at least a hundred times already!” She took a deep breath, giggling like a kid. “You look absolutely stunning with or without makeup. But tonight… you look unreal.” “That’s it, girl!” Alisha snapped her fingers in a dramatic flare. “That’s the exact energy I need right now. And you’re always the best to give it.” “But honey pie… all this intuition of yours is sending chills down my spine.” “Oh, come on!” Alisha laughed. “You have no idea how he’s been acting for the past few weeks!” Sweetheart, I want your d
