The torches had burned out in the corridor beyond the war room.

Emereah was alone in the half-dark, Lunareth sleeping against her breast, her head ringing with the voice of Morgane.

The Queen will kneel.

The words clung to her like smoke.

There were footsteps.

Vera.

Her hair still wet from rituals of warding, her cloak with a dusting of rune-ash, her eyes bright—haunted, but unyielding.

"You haven't slept," Vera said softly.

"I don't know how," Emereah whispered, swaying her daughter. "Every time I blink, I see flames."

Vera moved closer, speaking softly. "Then perhaps it's time we face it."

Emereah blinked. "What are you talking about?"

Vera didn't dawdle.

"We have to visit the Temple of Forgotten Fire."

There was silence.

Emereah gaped at her.

"That temple is cursed," she breathed. "Sealed. Forbidden since the Age of Sundering."

"Because it is true," Vera said. "Truth regarding Morgane's tie to the flame. and yours."

Emereah remained silent for a moment so long.

Then nodded, slowly.

She stood to him, her eyes bright and unflinching. "Show me."And with that, the mood in the room shifted once more. The seriousness of the conversation, the promises they had made, lingered between them like a gossamer string, binding them together—fragile, but unbreakable. In that moment, Emereah realized there was much to come, but for the first time in what seemed like an eternity, she allowed herself the hope that maybe—just maybe—they could do it together. For Lunareth. For their future. And for the love that had not yet been fully expressed.Vladimir remained silent, standing beside them, knowing that whatever he did in the coming days would have to express more than words ever could. And for the first time, he was prepared to reveal it.The next morningThe air on the training fields was heavy with expectation, the sound of boots crunching into earth and the rhythmic thud of fists against leather echoing through the stillness. The sun was low in the sky, casting long shadows a

Emereah's heart ached at Lunareth's muffled sobs, the hunger evident in the baby's wails. Her chest ached, not just from the physical discomfort of motherhood, but from the burden of everything—everything that had happened and everything to come.Vladimir's face relaxed immediately as he hugged the child a bit more roughly, his lips pursing into a minute frown of concern. "I think she's hungry," he whispered, his voice uncertain. He was never the kind of person who would care for a baby, not like Emereah had, but the way he cradled Lunareth now, it was as if he were learning.Emereah nodded, her own arms already open to receive Lunareth once more. "It's alright," she cooed softly to the baby, her voice a gentle lullaby. "We will care for you."She placed Lunareth in Vladimir's arms, enveloping the baby into her chest as she sat on the next chair. The baby's wails grew louder, and it pained Emereah, the cry of her daughter's hunger echoing in her heart. There was, however, softness in

The room was a quiet sanctuary, softly lit with the gentle movement of swaying candles. Shadows had a tendency to move if they kept their course along walls, hiding the edges of a room that had experienced so much sorrow and pain. But so it was not.Emereah crept into the room, her legs fighting. She never once looked away from Vladimir, whose position was rigid, as if he braced himself against something he could not quite identify. Their tension and unspoken words boiled with heat, and yet their weight increased only to the rhythm of their breathing.Vladimir at the window, candlelight on his face casting gentle shadows, darkness outside of it. His jaw clenched, his eyes black and unyielding. But something more, something within—a tug Emereah felt as a string tugging between them, beyond her control. He stood waiting for her to enter, his eyes immediately going to the baby in her arms. His face relaxed, and a warm smile that Emereah had not seen in years came over his face. "Lunareth

Vera strode the length of the room, her mind a maelstrom of numbers and doubt. The walls looming above her, that had once been so cold and foreboding, now seemed fragile, as if they too could break under the stress of their own secrets.Rhovan strode by the window, his step stiff. He looked out into the outer gates, his thoughts beyond the horizon. He had known Emereah for years. Seen her in worse and better days. And yet there was a coldness about him now, an unsettling fear. Fear that Morgane was not dead."She must know," Vera said, her voice firm but soft. "She must know that the danger hasn't actually vanished."Rhovan's face twisted round in her direction, his expression a mask. "Yes," he said, low-voiced, his eyes black coals. "She must know. But it's not whether we inform her. It's how we do it. How we. prepare her."Vera stopped her pacing, her face hardening. "What are you telling me? She's a fighter, Rhovan. She's fought worse. She can withstand the truth."He huffed, runni

And in that delicate space between twilight and night, where the sky oozed amber into darkness, Emereah drew breath. Really breathed. Not the sort of breath hammered out in combat, thick with fury and smoke, but one pulled softly—tentatively—through a body that had not known what peace could be. It was filled with ash, yes, but with something more there too. Hope. She did not take Vladimir's hand. Not yet. But she did not leave either. And he did not push. He stood beside her in silence, respectful, waiting—not for forgiveness, not for a judgment—but simply to be near. That was the difference now. He had learned to wait. For a woman like Emereah, who had scorched cities with her rage and cradled kingdoms in her belly, silence was more than sufficient. The moon was pale above them, casting silver over the devastated fields that lay beyond the walls of the sanctuary. There were still fires burning in the distance—pains of what they had endured, and threats of what was yet to befall them

Every day after the battle was like every other. Ashes clung to the walls of the sanctuary, a noxious reminder of the fire that had threatened to burn everything they loved. Smoke lingered in the air and the sky was gray and clouded. But amidst all the destruction, the people labored to rebuild physically, emotionally, spiritually. But in rebuilding, something inside Emereah was breaking. She could feel it in her bones, in the flame which had once burned so brightly, now burning with a reluctant fire. The flame still burned, hotly so, deep inside of her, but it was altered now. It was no longer the tool of power that it had been. It was now a burden, encumbered with the weight of loss, of betrayal, of all that had been broken in the aftermath of their battles. And Vladimir, he was there too, his presence ever at her side. He was quieter now, the ferocity that had once been his hallmark trained back into something more serious, more reflective. She could sense his eyes upon her, ever-a
