Detective Bennett was halfway through his first cup of coffee when his phone rang.

"The lab?" he answered.

The fingerprint analyst didn't waste a second.

"We've completed the comparison."

Bennett straightened.

"And?"

"The fresh fingerprints recovered from Victor Hale's notebook don't belong to Victor."

"Do we have a match?"

"No."

Bennett's shoulders sank.

"They're not in any criminal database."
