He said it like I was a dog he just adopted.

“Understood,” I said.

“Good.” He turned to leave, then stopped. “Dinner is at 8. With the board. Don’t embarrass me.”

That night I learned what Rule 4 really meant.

 **Dinner with the Vultures**

12 men in suits. All staring at me like I was a scam.

Because I was.

Michael introduced me as his wife. His hand didn’t touch my back. His eyes didn’t meet mine. But when one board member, Mr. Khabo, said, “She’s... young. Are you sure this will last a year, Michael?”

Michael's whole body went still.

“She’s my wife,” he said, voice flat. “Watch your tone when you speak to her.”

The table went silent. I almost choked on my wine. On the drive home he didn’t speak. At the top of the stairs he did.

“Don’t get used to that,” he said. “I protect assets. You’re an asset.”

“Right,” I whispered. “An asset.”

I went to my room. The guest wing. King bed. Walk-in closet. And a note on the pillow.

*Transfer 2: R2.5M in 6 months. If you last.*

I should’ve felt relieved. Instead I felt... something else. Because when Mr. Khabo looked at me, Michael looked like he wanted to break his jaw.

Toxic? Yes.

Jealous? I don't know..

And I was stuck with him for 365 days.

The gala was at Avani Maseru. Crystal chandeliers, R5000 dresses, and people who all knew each other’s bank balances. I hated it.

“Smile,” Michael murmured in my ear as cameras flashed. His hand was on the small of my back. The first time he’d touched me on purpose.

“Like you’re happy to be Mrs. Thorne.”

“I am happy,” I lied. “R5 million happy.”

His jaw ticked. He didn’t like that answer. We made it 10 minutes before he was dragged away by investors.

“Stay here,” he ordered. “Don’t talk to anyone.”

Right. Because I’m a dog. I grabbed a glass of champagne and hid near the dessert table. That’s when I saw him.

**Tebello.**

My ex. From university. The one and only guy who left me when mom got sick because “he couldn’t deal with drama.” He saw me too. And his eyes went wide.

“Palesa? Holy shit. You’re... with Michael Thorne?” “Tebello.” I kept my voice flat. “What are you doing here?”

“My uncle works with Thorne Holdings. I’m a consultant now.” He stepped closer. Too close. “You look amazing. Rich looks good on you.”

“I’m not—”

“Can I get you another drink? We should catch up. For old times sake.” His hand brushed my arm. That’s when the room got cold.

“Remove your hand from my wife.”

Michael said behind me. His voice was quiet but deadly. Tebello snatched his hand back like he’d been burned. “Mr. Thorne, I didn’t—”

“Didn’t what? Didn’t know she’s married? Didn’t know she’s off limits?” Michael stepped between us. He didn’t yell. He didn’t have to. The whole room was watching.

“Let me make it clear. Touch her again and you’ll never work in this country again. Understood?”

Tebello went pale. “Y-yes sir.” He walked away fast.

Michael turned to me. His eyes were black. Furious.

“Car. Now.”

 **The Ride Home**

Silence. Thick and angry. In the mansion, he slammed the door.

“Were you going to go with him?”

“What? No—”

“Then why were you smiling?”

“I wasn’t smiling! He surprised me!”

Michael stalked toward me. He stopped 1 step away. Close enough that I could smell his cologne.

“Rule 4, Palesa. You don’t touch me. And no one else touches you either. Not while you’re wearing my ring.”

He grabbed my hand. Twisted the wedding band on my finger.

“This means something. Even if it’s fake.”

My heart was pounding. “You’re being ridiculous.”

“Am I?” He leaned in. His breath hit my cheek. “Because I saw the way you looked at him. And I didn’t like it.”

For a second I thought he was going to kiss me.

He didn’t. He pulled back.

“Go to your room. Gala’s are canceled for you until next month.”

“YOU CAN’T—”

“I can. I’m your husband.” The word sounded wrong in his mouth. Possessive.

“And I’m your CEO. Don’t test me.”

He walked away. I stood there shaking. Not from fear. From the way his eyes burned when another man touched me.

Toxic. Jealous. Mine.

For 1 year.

MICHAEL POV - MASERU 6:17 AM. Maseru Streets. My Toyota. The app pinged. New Ride: R35. Cathedral to Airport. I accepted without looking. Haven’t slept in 22 hours. My phone was on the dash. 3 missed calls from Nkosi. He never calls this early unless— It rang again. “Nkosi?” I answered on speaker. “Michael! Are you driving?” “Yeah. What?” “Pull over. Now.” I did. It felt like my heart just dropped in my throat. “What happened?” “The judge granted a rehearing. 9AM. Today.” Nkosi was breathing hard. “Someone sent the court the real asset declaration last night. Anonymous email. It proves Khabo forged the transfer docs.” I gripped the steering wheel. “So?” “So we have a chance. A real chance to get Thorne Holdings back.” I laughed. One sharp, broken sound. “After all this?” “Be there at 9. Suit up. This is it, Michael.” I hung up. Stared at the Uber app. R35 ride cancelled. Penalty: R35. I turned the car around. 8:55 AM. Maseru High C

MASERU HIGH COURT - MORNING The courtroom smelled like sweat and old wood. I tugged at my collar. The suit was Michael Thorne’s. Past tense. “All rise!” Judge Moloi walked in. Didn’t look at me. “My lord,” my lawyer Mr. Nkosi stood. “We request the immediate unfreezing of my client’s personal accounts. The freeze was unlawful—” The judge raised a hand. “Mr. Nkosi. Did your client sign Exhibit B?” Nkosi flipped pages. Too fast. He slid a paper to me. “Michael. Was this your signature?” I looked. My blood went cold. Thorne Holdings Asset Transfer. Dated 3 years ago. My signature. Big and stupid at the bottom. “That’s for the subsidiary,” I said, voice rough. “Not my personal—” “Your honor,” Nkosi cut in, sweating. “We submit that this exhibit refers to—” The judge slammed the gavel. “Mr. Nkosi. You filed the wrong document.” She stared at me. “Motion denied. Accounts remain frozen. Next case.” BANG. Outside, I grabbed Nkosi’s arm. “What th

Week 2: Voss Architects, Cape Town The nausea hit me on a Tuesday. I was halfway through a site plan when my stomach flipped. I barely made it to the 3rd floor bathroom. Tinah found me 10 minutes later, washing my face. She didn’t knock, she just walked in. “Girl. What’s going on?”I was too tired to lie. “I’m pregnant.”Her eyes went wide, then softened. “How far?”“8 weeks.” I sat on the toilet lid. “Michael knows. We tried after the fake pregnancy thing to save the company, and it worked.” I laughed, but it hurt. “Now the company’s dead and I’m actually pregnant.”Tinah sat on the floor next to me. “You eat? You sleep? No? Come. I’m taking you to lunch.”That’s how Tinah became my person. She dragged me to the food court. Bought me ginger tea and told me about her 2 kids. “You’re not doing this alone,” she said. “Not while I’m here.”Week 3: Voss Architects, 7:30 PM I was the last one there. My phone buzzed. Voss Architects, Cape Town :The nameplate on my desk felt fake. Palesa Mokhosi - Junior Architect I ran my thumb over the letters. R25,000 a month. Medical aid. Lunch stipend. Real shit. I called Michael the second I sat down. My hands were shaking. He picked up on the third ring. Background noise. Car horns.“Hey. You made it?” His voice was tight.“Yeah. I’m at my desk.” I laughed, but it came out wrong. “How’s Maseru?”There was a pause and it became too long.“Good,” he said. “Michael.”He sighed. I heard him pull over. “Khabo froze everything, Palesa, ll of it. The accounts. Mom’s medical fund. Even the flat’s electricity account.” His voice cracked on the last part. “He’s claiming it was Thorne Holdings assets. Used for personal purposes.”The floor dropped out from under me. “What? But that was your inheritance—”“It’s gone.” Another car honked. “I gotta go. Got an Uber pickup in 5. I’ll call you tonight, okay?”“Michael—” He hung up.That night he didn’t call.

We lost everything in 48 hours. Thorne Holdings stock tanked when the fraud confession leaked. The board voted Michael out. Unanimously. Khabo took the CEO chair with a smile that made me sick. And me? I went from Mrs. Thorne to “that gold digger” on every blog in Lesotho in one night.Day 1: The Mansion Eviction notice on the door. “Thorne Holdings property,” the lawyer said. “You have 24 hours.”Michael didn’t fight it. He just started packing. No staff. No Auntie Nthabiseng. Just us and 2 suitcases.“You okay?” I asked as he taped a box. He looked at the empty nursery. “Yeah,” he said. “For the first time in years, yeah.”We moved into a 2-bedroom flat in Maseru West. R8,000 a month. No marble. No view. But the bed was ours. One bed. No space between us. That night we ate instant noodles on the floor. “Remember the steak dinners?” I asked.“Remember the 2AM eggs?” he answered. He pulled me into his lap. “I’d trade every billion for this.”I believed him.Day 7: The Job Hu

“The pregnancy...”The word hung between us like glass. Michael set his whiskey down. Slow. “What about it.”His voice was dead. I could hear my own heartbeat in the silence.“It wasn’t real.”He blinked. Once. “Don’t joke about that.”“I’m not joking.” Tears were already falling. “Michael, we planned it. Month 8 miscarriage. The bump, the photos, the doctor’s note. All of it. It was fake.”He stared at me. Then he laughed. Not a real laugh. The ugly kind.“Right. Because that’s funny. Because I’ve been crying for 3 days over nothing.”“I’m so sorry—”“SHUT UP!” The glass shattered against the wall. Whiskey ran down like blood. He stood. Pacing. Hands in his hair. “You let me... You let me hold you in that hospital. You let me think I killed—” He couldn’t finish. “I didn’t know how to tell you,” I sobbed. “You were breaking. And Khabo— and the company— I thought if I told you, you’d hate me.”He stopped pacing. Turned to me. “I do hate you.”The words cut deeper than the
