The receptionist at Thorne Holdings didn’t even look up when I walked in.

“Do you have an appointment?”

“I do. Palesa Mokhosi. 9AM. Architecture internship.”

She finally glanced at me. At my second-hand blazer. At my shoes that I’d polished three times last night.

“Sit. Mr. Thorne is running late.”

Late. Right. I clutched my portfolio to my chest like it could protect me. Inside was every project I’d done at National University of Lesotho. Every late night. Every “you’re so talented, girl” from my lecturers.

It also held the hospital bill folded in four. R347,892. Due in 7 days. Or they pull the plug on my mom’s dialysis. The glass doors opened and the whole floor went silent.

He was taller than his pictures. And colder. Black suit, no tie, jaw sharp enough to cut glass. Michael Thorne. 32. CEO rumored to have fired 3 people before lunch last Tuesday.

“Miss Mokhosi,” his voice was low. No smile. “My office. Now.”

I followed him. The office was all glass and steel and no warmth. He didn’t sit. He stood by the window overlooking Maseru like he owned the whole mountain view.

“Your portfolio is impressive,” he said. “Your GPA is perfect. So why are you here?”

“Because I need the job, sir.”

He turned. Dark eyes dragged over me.

“I don’t hire desperation.”

My throat closed. “Then don’t. But I’m the best junior architect you’ll ever interview this month. And I work 70 hours a week and I don’t complain.”

A beat. Then the corner of his mouth twitched. Almost a smile.

“Interesting.” He walked to his desk and pulled out a folder. Not a contract. A marriage certificate. My brain short-circuited.

“What is this?”

“My grandfather’s will. I inherit Thorne Holdings in 30 days if I’m married. If not, the board takes it.”

He slid it across the desk.

“Marry me for one year. R5,000,000. Paid in two installments. You live in my house. You attend 4 events a month with me. You do not fall in love with me. You do not touch me. You do not ask questions.”

I stared at the number. R5,000,000. Mom’s surgery. Twice over.

“This is illegal.”

“This is business,” he said. “Do we have a deal, Miss Mokhosi?”

Outside, the Maseru wind hit the glass. Inside, my whole life balanced on one word. I swallowed.

“Yes.”

He picked up a pen.

“Good. The wedding is on Saturday.”

The dress was white. The marriage was fake. But the ring on my finger weighed like a brick. Saturday came too fast. No guests. No priest with a kind smile. Just me, Michael, and a government magistrate in a grey office in Maseru who looked bored out of his mind.

“Do you, Palesa Mokhosi, take Michael Thorne to be your lawfully wedded husband?”

I glanced at Michael. He was in a black suit again. No emotion. Like we were signing a business merger. Which we were.

“I do.” My voice didn’t shake much.

“Do you, Michael Thorne...”

“I do.”

Stamp. Signature. R5,000,000 was apparently now mine. The first R2.5M hit my account before we even left the building. I paid the hospital before lunch. Mom was going to live. That should’ve been the end of it.

 **The Thorne Mansion**

It was not a house. It was a fortress on the hill overlooking Maseru. Glass, black marble, and staff who bowed when we walked in.

Michael stopped in the foyer.

“Rule 1: My bedroom is off limits.

Rule 2: You don’t speak to me unless spoken to at events.

Rule 3: You don’t leave Lesotho without telling me.

Rule 4: You don’t touch me.”

The corridors of the private wing at St. Jude’s Private Clinic in Maseru were silent, save for the rhythmic click of Michael’s polished oxfords against the marble floor. He walked with a mechanical stiffness, his expression a mask of indifference that had become his default setting. Behind him, the hospital staff scurried, their faces etched with a mixture of awe and apprehension. They weren't just delivering a baby; they were delivering the heir to the Thorne empire.Inside the luxury suite, the air was thick with the scent of antiseptic and expensive lilies. Nancy lay in the center of the oversized bed, her face pale and exhausted, but her eyes were wide and alert. In her arms lay a bundle wrapped in the finest white cashmere."Look at her, Michael," Nancy whispered, her voice raspy but triumphant. "She’s perfect. A true Thorne."Michael approached the bed slowly. He looked down at the i

The gala for the Thorne Holdings Anniversary was a masterclass in deception. The ballroom of the Mount Nelson Hotel was a sea of gold, champagne, and the kind of wealth that didn't just speak—it screamed. Every influential figure in the city was there, their eyes fixed on the man of the hour: Michael Thorne. To the photographers and the socialites, Michael was the pinnacle of success. He stood at the center of the room, a glass of vintage Cristal in his hand, wearing a bespoke tuxedo that fit him like armor. Beside him, clinging to his arm with a possessive grip, was Nancy.Nancy was the perfect accessory. She was stunning, draped in a shimmering silver gown that caught every flash of the cameras. She smiled the right way, laughed at the right moments, and played the role of the devoted partner with a precision that was almost mechanical.Together, they were the image of a power couple who had m

  • THE CEO'S CONTRACT WIFE: I didn't fall for him...Until I did    CHAPTER 68: DO I GO?

The invitation sat on Lindiwe’s mahogany desk like a live grenade. For three days, she hadn't touched it. She had stared at the elegant cream stationery and the embossed Thorne Holdings seal, feeling a mixture of visceral nausea and an intoxicating sense of triumph. The Annual General Meeting was the altar where corporate gods were made or slaughtered. For Michael, it was meant to be a victory lap—a display of strength to reassure the shareholders. For Lindiwe, it was the moment she would pull the rug from under his feet. But the thought of seeing him—of smelling his expensive cologne, of hearing that arrogant, commanding voice—made her skin crawl."You're overthinking it," Tinah said, leaning against the doorframe of the office. She was holding two cups of coffee, her expression knowing. "You've spent three years preparing for this. You didn't build an empire just to hide in t

The silence of Lindiwe’s home was no longer the oppressive, hollow silence of a woman in hiding; it had become a sanctuary. In the weeks following Naledi’s fever, the house felt warmer, filled with the chaotic energy of a toddler who had decided that every piece of furniture was a mountain to be climbed. Lindiwe sat in the living room, a glass of red wine in her hand and a stack of financial reports on her lap. To the outside world, she was the conquering hero of the corporate world, the woman who had quietly seized thirty percent of Thorne Holdings. But here, in the dim light of her sanctuary, she was simply a woman trying to keep her heart from beating out of her chest. The front door clicked open, and the sound of muffled laughter drifted into the room. Lindiwe looked up and smiled as Tinah walked in, glowing in a way that had nothing to do with professional success. Following her was Julian, the architect Lindiwe had met a few weeks prior. He was a man of quiet strength and genui

While Lindiwe fought a silent, desperate war against a childhood fever in the sterile halls of a private clinic, Michael Thorne was fighting a war of a different kind. He was not in his office. He was in a dimly lit, smoke-filled room in the heart of Maseru, sitting across from a man who specialized in the things that didn't exist on paper. The man was called Elias, a "recovery specialist"—a polite term for a private investigator who dealt in secrets, blackmail, and the tracking of people who didn't want to be found. Elias didn't work for the law, and he didn't work for the board. He worked for the highest bidder."You're asking for the impossible, Mr. Thorne," Elias said, leaning back in his chair, a thin cigarette dangling from his lips. "Lindiwe Mokoena is a ghost. Her company, Naledi Ventures, is a masterpiece of shell companies and offshore trusts. She hasn't left a digital footprint in three years that isn't professionally curated. She doesn't use social media. She doesn't do

  • THE CEO'S CONTRACT WIFE: I didn't fall for him...Until I did    CHAPTER 65: FEVER AT 3AM

The world knew her as the "Iron Lady." They knew her as the CEO of Naledi Ventures, the woman who had terrified the board of Thorne Holdings and rewritten the rules of South African architecture. But at 3:14 AM, in the quiet dimness of her bedroom, Lindiwe Mokoena was not a CEO.She was just a mother, and she was terrified.Lindiwe sat on the edge of the bed, her heart hammering against her ribs. In her arms, Naledi was tossing and turning, his small body radiating a heat that felt like a furnace. His breathing was shallow, punctuated by small, ragged whimpers that tore through Lindiwe’s soul. She pressed a damp cloth to his forehead, but the fever didn't break. It only seemed to climb."I've got you, baby. Mommy's here," she whispered, her voice trembling. For the first time in months, the fortress she had built around herself felt like a prison. She ha
