Chapter Thirty-one

Marina's shadow magic exploded outward on pure instinct.

Darkness erupted from her body, filling the Great Hall with writhing tendrils that lashed at Kael's warriors. Not to kill but to disorient, to buy precious seconds to think.

"Run!" Lyra grabbed Marina's arm, pulling her toward the eastern exit.

"No." Marina planted her feet, her hybrid nature recognizing the tactical mistake. "They're herding us. Whatever direction we run, they've already prepared for it."

  • THE ALPHA'S RUIN    What Remained

Two years passed the way years tend to pass once the worst of a story has finished, quietly, unevenly, full of small ordinary days that never would have made it into any account of the coalition's most dangerous winter, and Marina found, looking back on them from the vantage of a warm summer evening, that she remembered the ordinary days more clearly than she remembered the danger. She remembered Wren's first season as a full member of Bloodfang, tentative and watchful for months before she finally let herself believe the pack meant to keep her rather than simply tolerate her usefulness, the day she asked Renna to teach her the reverse channel technique not because anyone required it of her, but because she wanted, for the first time in her life, to learn something purely for the pleasure of understanding it. She remembered Vael's long, careful process through the council's judgment, the exile that had been proposed and the alternative Marina herself had argued for instead, a bounded

  • THE ALPHA'S RUIN    What They Chose This Time

They held the ceremony three weeks later, once Halvard had healed enough to stand without support, once the council had finished its long, careful process with Vael and Wren both, once the last of the frightened uncertainty that had gripped the pack house since the horn first sounded had finally settled into something calmer, more ordinary, the specific relief of a community that had faced its worst fear and found, on the other side of it, that it was still standing.Marina stood in the same clearing where the Blood Moon Hunt had first bound her to Silvain three years earlier, except nothing else about the ceremony resembled that night at all. There was no ritual disguise, no careful performance of a stranger's seduction, no political calculation weighing every word before she spoke it. There was only Silvain, standing across from her in the fading evening light, and the whole of Bloodfang gathered around them in a wide, unhurried circle, and her daughters seated at the front between

  • THE ALPHA'S RUIN    The Lock's Judgment

They gathered at Hollow Ridge before dawn, the same grey half light that had opened this entire ordeal now stretching pale across the formation's dark stone slabs, and Marina stood beside Silvain with the twins held between them, both girls awake and solemn in a way that made Marina's chest ache with how quickly they had been forced to grow past the ordinary innocence of childhood in the span of two days. She had argued against bringing them at first. Silvain had argued harder for it, reminding her of the promise they had made on the walk back from the council chamber, no more careful management, no more deciding for the twins what truths they were and weren't ready to carry, and in the end Marina had agreed, because some part of her recognized that whatever happened at this formation today, her daughters deserved to witness it rather than have it explained to them secondhand, softened for their comfort the way so much had already been softened before last night finally broke that hab

  • THE ALPHA'S RUIN    The Council's Choice

The council chamber filled again well past midnight, exhaustion carved into every face gathered around the long table, and Marina stood at its head with Silvain beside her, laying out the Custodian's offer with the same unflinching honesty they had promised the pack only hours earlier."He wants to prove his belief," she finished. "That the third archive holds something the First Circle sealed out of fear rather than wisdom. He's offered to let us witness it directly, under our own precautions, and to seal it permanently himself if he's proven wrong.""And you believe he's sincere," Dessa said, "even after everything.""I believe he genuinely holds this belief," Marina said carefully. "That isn't the same as trusting his judgment. A man can be entirely sincere and entirely mistaken, and the cost of being wrong here isn't something any of us can afford to treat lightly."Vael, seated near the council's edge with the same careful, provisional freedom he had been granted since the vault,

  • THE ALPHA'S RUIN    The Reckoning at the Stones

They returned to Bloodfang territory a little before nightfall, Halvard leaning heavily on Silvain for most of the final stretch, Wren walking close beside Marina with the particular wariness of someone who had spent her whole life being told the coalition was an enemy and had not yet fully learned how to stop bracing for betrayal that wasn't coming. The boundary stones were waiting for them.Marina felt it before she saw it, the hum rising sharp and sudden the moment they crossed into range, not the hollow, mimicked signal from the night before, but something real, something enormous, resonance building in the air around the stones with an intensity that made her steps falter and her heart climb into her throat. The Custodian stood at the center of the boundary line, unhurried, patient as always, and beside him, close enough that Marina's breath caught painfully in her chest, stood Astrid, her expression carefully blank in a way that told Marina immediately, before a single word was

  • THE ALPHA'S RUIN    What the Lodge Cost

Marina reached the southern door in time to see Ragnar driving one guard back against the collapsed remains of a support beam, his two wolves engaging a second near the doorway, the sounds of the fight sharp and fast in the enclosed space of the lodge's main room."There's a third," Wren said, close behind her, her voice tight with the particular urgency of someone who understood exactly what she was warning them about. "He wasn't visible from outside. He's been waiting in the cellar since before you arrived, in case negotiation failed."The warning came a half second before the cellar door burst open and a man moved into the room with a speed that told Marina immediately he was not an ordinary guard, his movements too precise, too controlled, carrying the same unnatural quality Vael had described in the Custodian's own careful, patient work.He went straight for Wren."You were meant to bring them to me," he said, and his voice carried none of the mild patience Marina had heard from
