The next morning, the Academy hummed with life. Aera awoke in her assigned dormitory—a small room with high ceilings, whitewashed walls, and a single window that let in the first pale rays of dawn. She sat on the edge of her bed, staring at her palm. The sigil from the relic burned faintly, a steady pulse that she couldn’t ignore.

Kael sat across from her, leaning against the wall. His expression was unreadable, but his dark eyes lingered on her hand.

“You didn’t sleep,” he said softly.

“I couldn’t,” Aera admitted. “It’s… the sigil. I don’t understand it.”

Kael stood and walked toward the window, hands behind his back. “You will. But not here. Not yet. Today, you’re meeting the Headmistress formally. And… others. People who will judge you, test you, and, in some cases, fear you.”

Aera’s stomach twisted. She had thought the first lesson was overwhelming. This sounded worse.

The main hall of the Academy was already bustling with students. Many were gathered in groups, practicing minor spells or discussing yesterday’s lessons. Aera felt the weight of hundreds of eyes on her as she entered. Whispers traveled like a current:

“She has a sigil.”

“She’s awake.”

“The Chosen One…”

Kael kept close, his presence grounding her. “Ignore them,” he whispered. “Focus on your steps. Focus on yourself.”

They reached the Headmistress’s office—a grand chamber atop a spiral staircase. The door swung open before Kael could knock, and they were ushered in. The Headmistress sat behind a desk carved from black oak, her silver hair falling in waves around her shoulders. Her eyes—sharp, calculating—studied Aera like a hawk observing prey.

“Miss Vale,” she said, her voice smooth and commanding. “You have begun your journey at Astryss. I trust you understand that attendance here is not a privilege—it is a responsibility. And your presence here… unusual, to say the least.”

Aera swallowed, trying to appear composed. “Yes, Headmistress.”

Kael’s hand brushed hers briefly as he stepped back. He didn’t need to say anything. The tension between them was unspoken but heavy.

The Headmistress stood and gestured to a series of chairs arranged in a semicircle. “These students will be your classmates. Observe them. Learn from them. But also… beware them. The hierarchy of bloodlines at Astryss is ancient and rigid. Power is measured not by talent alone, but by lineage, control, and alliances.”

Aera’s pulse quickened. She had heard whispers of bloodline hierarchies, but seeing it laid bare made her stomach churn.

“Some of these students are descendants of royal families, Chosen Ones, and ancient lines. They may not accept you. They may… challenge you. You will need to navigate carefully.”

Aera’s eyes scanned the semicircle of students. Some regarded her with curiosity, others with disdain, and a few with barely contained fear.

One girl in emerald robes, the same who had confronted her in the corridor, rose slightly, her gaze sharp. “We’ll see if your blood—or your magic—is worthy.”

Aera’s jaw tightened. She wanted to reply, but Kael’s glance warned her. Not yet.

The Headmistress continued, “We will begin with a test. A practical demonstration of magical aptitude. Each student will summon energy unique to their lineage. Control, form, and intent will be evaluated. Miss Vale, you will go last.”

Aera’s stomach knotted. Every lesson so far had made it clear: her magic didn’t follow rules. The relic, the sigil—it was something else. Something unpredictable.

Students stood one by one. Sparks, orbs, small flames, and shields appeared effortlessly. Whispers of admiration and envy rippled through the hall.

When it was her turn, Aera stepped forward, palms clammy. She closed her eyes, focusing on the sigil burning faintly in her mind. She remembered the relic, the murals, the whisper:

You are mine. Do not fail.

She extended her hands. A flicker of blue light appeared. At first, it seemed small, timid, like yesterday. Then it expanded. Her energy poured outward, forming a floating halo of light that spun and twisted, reacting to her emotions. The room went silent.

Other students gasped. Some took a step back. The girl in emerald robes stiffened.

The light pulsed, growing stronger, responding to her heartbeat, her fear, her wonder. Aera tried to shape it, but it refused commands—until she stopped trying.

Then it obeyed.

It swirled around her in elegant patterns, casting shadows on the walls. Symbols similar to those in the Forbidden Wing murals appeared in the air, glowing faintly. The Headmistress leaned forward, expression unreadable.

Kael’s eyes widened slightly. He had never seen her fully harness the sigil like this.

The halo dissipated, leaving a faint glow on the floor in the shape of an intricate pattern. Whispers broke out across the room.

“She’s not just powerful… she’s something else.”

“The Chosen One… or more?”

The girl in emerald robes stared at Aera, lips pressed tight. “It’s… unnatural.”

Aera felt her chest tighten. That word—unnatural—echoed in her mind, but it wasn’t fear. It was truth. She wasn’t like the others. She never would be.

After the test, the Headmistress addressed the group. “Magic is only a tool. Bloodline is only a legacy. What matters most is intent and control. Miss Vale, your abilities are… unprecedented. You will require guidance. Kael, see that she receives it. And all of you,” she said, gesturing to the other students, “observe her closely. The world reacts to those chosen by fate.”

The hall emptied, and murmurs followed Aera through the corridors. Kael walked beside her, silent.

Finally, she asked, “Kael… what did that mean? ‘The world reacts to those chosen by fate’?”

Kael hesitated. “It means… your magic isn’t just yours. Others will notice it. Some will want it, some will fear it. And some… will try to control it.”

Aera swallowed hard. “Like the relic?”

Kael’s expression tightened. “Exactly. You’ve awakened something ancient. Something tied to your bloodline. The Academy… the Council… everyone will want to see what you can do. And not all of them will be kind.”

Her stomach churned. She had come here thinking she’d learn magic, maybe make a few friends. Instead, she had stepped into a world of politics, bloodlines, and hidden agendas.

As they reached the dormitory wing, Kael stopped. “There’s one more thing,” he said quietly. “You’re not alone in being watched.”

Aera frowned. “What do you mean?”

Kael’s gaze flicked to the window overlooking the courtyard. “Someone… or something is tracking your magic. I don’t know who it is yet, but they’ve noticed you since the relic.”

Aera felt a chill run down her spine. The whisper from the Forbidden Wing, the shadow in the corridor, the glowing sigil—everything connected.

“Kael… what if it’s dangerous?” she asked.

He knelt slightly, meeting her eyes. “Then we deal with it together. But you must understand—this isn’t just school politics. This is bigger. Much bigger. And it won’t wait for you to be ready.”

Aera nodded, determination hardening in her chest. She had faced fear before, but this… this was something entirely new. Something that called to her blood, her magic, her destiny.

And she would not run.

Just then, a muffled scream echoed from the courtyard below. The sound was short, urgent, and unmistakably real.

Kael’s hand went to the hilt of a dagger at his side. “Stay here,” he ordered. “Do not move.”

But Aera didn’t move. She couldn’t. Something in her gut told her this scream… was connected to her.

Kael’s eyes flicked to hers, warning and frustrated. “Aera, stay—”

Too late.

Aera bolted for the stairs, instincts overriding caution. The corridors blurred past her. Magic pulsed in her veins, responding to her fear, her adrenaline.

She reached the window and peered down. In the courtyard, a group of students was encircling someone—or something. Shadows twisted unnaturally around the figure in the center.

And for a heartbeat, Aera recognized the sigil—the same one branded on her palm.

Her heart froze.

The world had just made its first move.

  • THE CROWN THEY HID FROM ME   Chapter 52 — Motives

The air in the concealed chamber was oppressive, permeated by residual magic, the faint aroma of incense, and the palpable tension of impending confrontation. Aera Vale stood tall, the crown pulsing softly upon her head, accompanied by Kael, sword drawn, and Liora, whose hands glowed with a faint energy as she traced the residual currents left by the architect. Across from them, the hooded figure leaned casually against the wall, their eyes piercing, exuding an aura of confidence that even the seasoned guardians of Eldoria found unsettling.“Your vigilance has been commendable,” Aera uttered, her voice firm and composed. “However, caution alone is insufficient. Every action, every clandestine communication, every shadowed gesture led you to this juncture. Now, you must provide an explanation: why?”The figure responded with a soft chuckle, a sound that reverberated throughout the stone chamber, akin to a ripple of mischief and calculated audacity. “Why?” they repeated, their voice lac

  • THE CROWN THEY HID FROM ME   Chapter 51 — The Hidden Architect Emerges

The palace’s serenity was deceptive, a fragile illusion stretched over weeks of vigilant surveillance. The initial betrayal had been contained, the subtle web of conspirators unveiled—but Aera Vale was aware that vigilance alone would not safeguard Eldoria indefinitely. Somewhere in the shadows, a mind more astute than any she had encountered awaited its opportune moment. Someone had orchestrated the betrayal from the outset, someone patient, calculating, and audacious. It commenced with whispers on the wind—a courier’s hurried footsteps, an unmarked message intercepted, and a series of minor accidents that went unnoticed. Initially, they appeared coincidental: a lantern extinguished mid-corridor, a document misplaced, a minor spell in the palace gardens malfunctioning inexplicably. However, the crown pulsed sharply as Aera entered her private chambers, alerting her to a subtle, deliberate disturbance.“They are now operating beyond the shadows,” Aera whispered, her eyes narrowing. “T

  • THE CROWN THEY HID FROM ME   Chapter 50 — The First Betrayal

The palace lay veiled in a deceptive tranquility, a peace that emanated not from safety but from the absence of immediate conflict. However, Aera Vale, her crown pulsing softly upon her head, perceived the underlying tension that permeated every corridor, every hushed whisper, and every scrutinising glance. The remnants of the Veil had been shattered, subtle conspiracies had been uncovered and contained, and Eldoria’s governance was being restored. Nevertheless, shadows persisted where light dared not fully penetrate. It commenced with a solitary note, concealed within the folds of her private chamber. No seal affixed it, no signature betrayed its sender. The words, meticulously penned in precise script, conveyed a simple yet profound message: “Not all loyalty is genuine, not all shadows have vanished.”Aera perused the note twice, then thrice, allowing its weighty warning to sink in. It was subtle yet deliberate—a message crafted to unsettle, to challenge her vigilance, and to remind

The palace, once a fortress of overt danger and concealed assassins, now exuded a deceptive tranquility. Hallways gleamed in polished stone, corridors reverberated with measured footsteps, and chandeliers reflected the initial light of day across the walls. To the untrained eye, Eldoria’s heart had finally attained peace. However, Aera Vale, the crown pulsing lightly upon her head, was cognizant that peace was a fragile illusion—a thin veil draped over currents of ambition, clandestine plots, and subtle machinations left behind by the remnants of the Veil.It commenced with whispers, almost imperceptible, traversing corridors akin to autumn leaves on a silent wind. Servants mentioned minor anomalies: a misplaced scroll, a note discovered torn in a hallway, and a councilor’s hushed conversation that abruptly ceased upon being overheard. None of these incidents appeared threatening individually, yet patterns emerged under the crown’s guidance.Aera sat in the council chamber with Kael a

The first rays of sunlight illuminated Eldoria, casting a serene golden glow upon the city, which seemed at odds with the lingering tension within the palace halls. Following the successful dismantling of the Veil’s leadership, Aera Vale permitted herself a fleeting moment of respite. The crown upon her head pulsed softly, not with alarm or warning, but with a steady, reassuring rhythm. Nevertheless, she was cognizant of the fact that she could not assume the war had concluded. While shadows had been unveiled, the slightest hint of deception could still engender chaos in unexpected locations.Kael, ever vigilant, stood by the balcony railing, surveying the streets below. His expression was composed yet unreadable, reflecting the meticulous caution that had guided them through the preceding weeks. Liora sat cross-legged near the council table, meticulously tracing faint lines in the air with her hands, attempting to untangle lingering wards left behind by the Veil’s operatives.“They h

  • THE CROWN THEY HID FROM ME   Chapter 47 — The Heart of Deception

As the first light of dawn illuminated Eldoria, Aera Vale convened her inner circle. The city appeared tranquil, even serene, but appearances belied the truth. The Veil, their intricate web of manipulation, had been unraveled across the provinces and the capital. However, their leaders remained elusive, shadows at the heart of the conspiracy, orchestrating chaos from concealed chambers and secret halls.Aera stood at the centre of the war room, the crown resting lightly upon her head, emitting a soft, steady pulse. Maps and intercepted messages adorned the table, each meticulously annotated with lines connecting operatives, locations, and the faint trace of magical influence. Liora hovered nearby, analysing invisible energy threads, while Kael’s gaze was sharp and calculating, scrutinising every detail.“They are now at the core of our web,” Aera declared, her voice composed yet commanding. “We have exposed their network, intercepted their operatives, and neutralised the immediate thr
