ARIA (POV)

Aria! Step back!" Elias shrieked from behind the glass, hurling his body against the reinforced steel portcullis. The heavy frame didn't even vibrate.

[2...]

The dual barrels of the ceiling turret spun up to full speed, the whining sound filling the tiny steel airlock like a swarm of metallic hornets.

I didn't try to run. There was nowhere to run. The airlock was a kill-box six feet wide.

Instead of diving for cover, I pressed my back hard against the titanium door, raised the amber

  • THE DEAN'S ASSASSIN    The Descent into the Shadow

POV ARIA The wind screamed in my ears like a dying turbine as Elias pushed the snowmobile past sixty miles an hour down the unmarked glacial gulley. Behind us, the heavy diesel engines of the tactical snow-cats rumbled like distant thunder, their high-intensity halogen beams cutting long, frantic arcs across the white snow slopes above.TR-TR-TR-TR-TR-TR-TR-TR!A heavy, vehicle-mounted machine gun opened up from the lead snow-cat.Tracer rounds glowing bright, violent crimson in the Arctic night whipped past my left ear, punching deep, hissing holes into the snowdrifts around us. One round clipped an exposed basalt boulder three feet away, showering my helmet visor with razor-sharp stone splinters."Hold on!" Elias yelled, leaning his entire body weight hard to the right. The snowmobile banked sharply onto a narrow ice shelf hanging over a two-hundred-foot ravine. I spun around in my seat, locking my boots into the foot-pegs, and unslung my HK416. Lowering my night-vision lens, the w

  • THE DEAN'S ASSASSIN    The Echo in the Dark

POV ARIA The hum didn’t start in my ears; it started in the soles of my combat boots. It was a low, subsonic vibration that rattled the fillings in my back teeth before I even recognized it as power. I stood frozen on the steel catwalk of the decommissioned Soviet communications bunker, ninety feet beneath the frozen soil of Svalbard. Three minutes ago, Elias and I had verified the purge. We had watched the last server rack go dark, the cooling fans whining down to a dead, breathless silence. The Ghost Nodes were supposed to be dead. Blackbriar was supposed to be a corpse. Then the lights flickered. Not the bright, industrial halogens of an active facility, but a sickly, amber emergency pulse that cast long, skeletal shadows across the rusted bulkheads."Aria," Elias’s voice was barely a rasp over the local comms. He was standing near the primary breaker box thirty feet away, his HK416 held low against his hip, his slate-gray eyes wide in the amber gloom. "Tell me that’s a residual c

  • THE DEAN'S ASSASSIN    The Horizon of Ash

POV ARIA The rain washed the white fire-retardant foam off our clothes, turning it into a murky sludge that pooled around our knees on the ruined roof.I lay on my back for a long time, staring up into the stormy Tokyo sky, watching the low, dark clouds race past the neon-lit spires of the city. My heart was pounding against my bruised ribs like a trapped bird, but the constant, low-frequency hum of fear that had lived inside my mind for twelve years... was gone.Beside me, Elias rolled onto his back with a deep, groaning sigh. His face was covered in a mix of soot, rain, and blood from his reopening shoulder wound, but his gray eyes were looking up at the sky, clear and focused for the first time since I’d met him in that dreary Zurich cafe."Did we... did we get it?" he rasped, his breath misting in the cold rain.I sat up slowly, my entire body protesting every millimeter of movement.Fifty feet away, where the satellite dish had once stood, was a scorched, smoking crater of melte

  • THE DEAN'S ASSASSIN    The Svalbard Vector

POV ARIA The stairwell was an endless vertical chute of bare concrete and harsh yellow emergency lighting.Thirty flights. Every step was an agony that burned through my lungs like liquid fire. Elias was right behind me, his stubborn refusal to die defying every biological law of human survival. His face was slick with cold sweat, his breath coming in ragged, bloody hitches, but he kept his weapon raised, covering our rear as we ascended into the stormy Tokyo night. At the seventy-fifth floor, the heavy steel door leading to the roof had been blown off its hinges by a breaching charge. We stepped out onto the open-air helipad.A roaring typhoon was blowing off Tokyo Bay, driving a blinding wall of rain across the concrete roof. The wind screamed around the towering steel spires of the building, tearing at our soaked clothes and making it almost impossible to stand upright. At the far end of the pad, sitting beneath the massive, ten-meter satellite uplink dish, sat a sleek, black Siko

  • THE DEAN'S ASSASSIN    The Serpent’s Crown

POV ARIA The white noise in my ears sounded like an idling jet engine.I was flat on my stomach, my hands twitching toward the fallen carbine three feet away on the white marble floor. My vision was swimming in shades of neon green and blinding purple, the toxic freon gas from the shattered cooling units burning the lining of my nostrils.Heavy, deliberate footsteps approached through the haze. Not the rushed, chaotic steps of mercenaries, but the steady, measured gait of a man who had walked through dead bodies his entire life.A heavy leather boot stepped down on my right wrist, pinning it to the cold floor before my fingers could reach the gun's handguard."Pick her up," a familiar, raspy voice ordered. Two strong arms hauled me to my feet, slamming my back against the shattered steel frame of the server rack. I spit a mouthful of blood onto the floor, forced my swelling eyes open, and looked into the face of Director Vance-Ross.He wasn't wearing his usual crisp, bureaucratic sui

  • THE DEAN'S ASSASSIN    The Phantom Protocol

POV ARIA The smell of jet fuel was thick enough to chew. It settled on my tongue, chemical and heavy, coating the back of my throat as the ventilation grates continued to hiss."Aria..." Elias coughed, his body shivering violently against mine as the toxic fumes entered his lungs. "The... the maintenance hatch... under the primary power junction..."I didn't ask how he knew. Elias had spent three months scouting the Tokyo subterranean network before the DIA captured him."Hold onto me," I commanded, pulling his good arm over my shoulder.I dragged him toward the middle of the corridor, my boots kicking aside shattered glass and spent shell casings. The floor was already becoming slick as liquid kerosene dripped from the ceiling vents, pooling around our ankles."Victoria!" I yelled toward the security camera in the corner, its red optic lens glowing like an evil eye in the dark. "If you set this off, the drive burns with us! You'll never get the primary encryption keys!"A cold laugh
