Evelina's POV

I sat beside my mother's bed, staring at the IV line attached to her arm. She looked smaller than she used to. She looked weak, and I hated whatever cruel force in the universe thought it was funny to keep taking people away from me.

First Dad, now Mum.

"You're too hard on yourself, baby." Mum's voice was weak, but her smile remained gentle.

My throat tightened. "You don't get to tell me that."

Her smile faltered. I quickly looked away before she could see the tears gathering in my eyes.

"I won't let Death take you too..." I whispered. "Just like it took Dad."

Silence settled between us. Then Mum sighed softly. "You're so stubborn."

I snorted. "Runs in the family."

She chuckled, "I appreciate everything you do for me, my little Eve."

The smile on my face faded. "Then stop talking like you're writing a goodbye letter."

"It just breaks my heart," she said quietly, "seeing you work yourself to exhaustion because of me."

I rolled my eyes. "No need to get emotional, Mum."

"Emotional?"

"Whatever... I have to go. I'm running late already for my shift." I stood from the chair and leaned in to kiss her forehead. Her fingers wrapped around mine. For a second, neither of us spoke.

"I don't like that place, Eve." She said.

I sighed, "I love you, Mum."

Her eyes softened. "I love you too, my dear child."

Then, I forced myself to leave.

I hopped on my motorcycle and rode fast because I was late for twenty freaking minutes. I hurried through the back entrance of Sin & Silk, nearly colliding with a waitress carrying a tray of drinks.

The moment I stepped behind the bar, Dennis looked up. His expression immediately turned smug.

"You're late."

I grabbed an apron. "There was traffic."

Dennis stared at me. "Are you serious right now? Traffic, on a bike."

I rolled my eyes. "Motorcycle. And yes, terrible traffic." I moved before he could say anything else.

The club was already packed. Music blasted through hidden speakers. Colored lights danced across the walls. Half the men inside were staring at the strippers on stage like they'd never seen a woman before. Others were having fun with half-naked women. The rest were desperate women looking for one night stands.

I grabbed a tray and got to work. A few minutes later, I was standing beside a table occupied by four rough looking men with bad attitudes. They looked like they'd escaped from prison together.

I placed their drinks down with a simple, "Enjoy." Then I turned to leave.

A hand suddenly grabbed my wrist. I looked down slowly... then up. The man's grin immediately irritated me.

"Hey, sweet thing," he said. "We're not done ordering."

I pulled my hand free. "You could have gotten my attention without making a fool of yourself."

His smile vanished. "How dare you-"

I was already walking away. Honestly, I had bills to pay. Entertaining idiots wasn't on today's schedule.

Behind me, I heard muttered curses. Good, I had a few of my own.

For the next twenty minutes, I worked nonstop, taking orders and serving drinks. Unfortunately, every time I looked up, those four idiots were still staring at me. I ignored them. I was carrying another tray when the club doors opened. For some reason, I glanced up. And froze.

A man had just entered. He was tall and really attractive, but there was something unsettling about him. He had the kind of face that made people forget any other thing or person existed.

His gaze swept across the room. Those green intense eyes landed on me. For a second, my heart stumbled against my ribs. Those eyes lingered on me a little too long. Suddenly, I was aware of how I looked in my work clothes. Probably the strands of hair... what the hell?? Focus Evelina. He's just another customer. Stop being weird.

I adjusted my tray and continued walking. Unfortunately, the universe had other plans. A rough hand suddenly grabbed my ass. The tray nearly slipped from my fingers.

For one second, the entire club went silent in my head. Then I couldn't contain the rage. I spun around, and gave the man a well deserving hard slap. The sound echoed.

"What the HELL is wrong with you?!"

The men were silent for a moment, then they stood up. Uh-oh...

The one I slapped, I guess their leader, touched his reddened cheek. His expression twisted with rage. "Bitch!"

A dangerous smile crossed my face. "The feeling is mutual."

He lunged at me. I grabbed the nearest bottle and smashed it across his shoulder. He crashed into a table. People around were beginning to scream. The second man came at me. I drove my knee upward toward his groin and he went down, his scream nearly drowned out the music.

The third and fourth men looked ready to jump in... until the bouncers arrived. Finally, the idiots were dragged away. Unfortunately, so was I. Straight into Victor Hayes' office.

----

"They assaulted me."

"Yea… yea…" He replied lazily.

I blinked. "Then why am I the one getting punished?"

Victor rubbed his forehead. "Because this club runs on money, Mercer."

I stared at him. Surely he wasn't serious. "They groped me and attacked me."

"They what now?"

The pretentious bastard! I pointed at him and yelled. "Are you being serious right now?! Did you fall as a baby and lose the part of your brain responsible for understanding basic human behavior?"

His eye twitched. "You're suspended for two weeks."

"What?" My stomach dropped.

Victor pointed towards the door. "Two weeks without pay. Now get out!"

Two weeks... without pay. The words slammed into me harder than any punch. I thought about the weight of responsibilities pressing on my shoulders. Mum's next dialysis treatment was due in seven days. Everything flashed through my mind.

I clenched my fists so tightly my nails dug into my palms. If I didn't desperately need this job, I would have told Victor exactly where he could shove his suspension. Instead, I stormed out.

----

The moment I reached the parking lot, my anger finally broke. I collapsed onto my motorcycle... Dad's motorcycle, the only thing he left behind. The tears came before I could stop them. I lowered my head against the handlebars.

"It's too much, Dad." My voice cracked. "What do I do?..." I whispered.

The parking lot was empty. No one could hear me. After a moment, I wiped my eyes aggressively.

Enough... Crying wasn't going to solve anything anyway. I climbed onto the motorcycle and started the engine. Then I looked up and froze.

Across the street, beneath a flickering streetlight, stood the mysterious man. Just watching me. Those impossible green eyes locked onto mine.

A chill ran down my spine. I blinked, and he was gone. I stared at the empty space. "What the hell?" I put on my helmet. "What a creep.”

  • THE DEVIL'S BRIDE   CHAPTER SEVEN

Evelina's POVThe moment I stepped out of Nightfall Estate, I released a breath I hadn't realized I'd been holding. What the hell had just happened in there?I climbed onto Dad's motorcycle and stared at the mansion behind me. There was something wrong with that place.Everything about it felt strange—the people, the enormous estate, the guard who looked like he could crush me with one hand, and especially the man who owned it.Adrian Nightmere.I still couldn't understand how he knew my name. And why did he look at me like that?I shook my head. I didn't have time to figure out mysterious rich men and their creepy mansions.I rode straight to the hospital. The first thing I did was make the payment for mum's dialysis. For the first time in days, I could breathe. At least this week's treatment was covered. But instead of feeling completely relieved, my mind kept returning to the same question. Was taking that job the right decision? The money was exactly what I needed. More than I cou

  • THE DEVIL'S BRIDE   CHAPTER SIX

Adrian's POV“Um… I didn't mean it that way. I… I just want to apply,” she stuttered. For a woman who had spent the last several minutes arguing with Mojito, a guard at least twice her size, she suddenly seemed unsure of herself.“Are you certain you want to apply, Eve?" I could barely hold back my smile. The moment the words left my mouth, I noticed the faint change in her expression. Her cheeks flushed, and she looked away for half a second before forcing herself to meet my eyes again.“Of course… but how do you know my name?"She was an intriguing woman. If only she knew what I already knew about her.“I know a lot of things, Eve. Especially when someone intends to work for me." I maintained eye contact with her.“I must say, that's weird. But since you're Mr. Know-It-All, you must know I really need the money from this job." She narrowed her eyes.“Well, my name is Adrian Nightmere. Welcome to Nightfall Estate." I smirked. “Walk with me, please."She glanced behind her at my guard

  • THE DEVIL'S BRIDE   CHAPTER FIVE

Evelina's POVI stared at the photo on my phone. Then, at the hospital payment reminder. After a few more minutes of staring at the screen like it might magically solve my problems, I shoved my phone into my pocket and stood up. My mind was made up.The first thing I did was make sure Caleb had absolutely no idea what I was planning. That man was already dramatic enough. Before heading there, I stopped by the hospital. The familiar smell of disinfectant greeted me the moment I stepped into mother's room. My mother looked up from her book and smiled."There she is. How're you doing, my Tiger?"I smiled back. "Still alive, Mum.""That's reassuring."I sat beside her bed.For a few minutes, we talked about everything and nothing. The weather. Hospital food. A ridiculous television show she had become obsessed with. It felt almost normal, then her eyes narrowed."What?" I frowned."You look exhausted.""I'm fine, Mum.""Evelina, you have bags under your eyes.""Ughh… I've just been busy."

  • THE DEVIL'S BRIDE   CHAPTER FOUR

Evelina's POVI should just go home. That was the first thought running through my head as I stared at the delivery request on my phone. The second thought was that hospital bills didn't magically pay themselves. The payment attached to the order was ridiculous. The destination wasn't much better.Nightfall Estate.Just seeing the name made something uncomfortable twist in my stomach.Nightfall Estate wasn't the kind of place people casually visited. It was where the city's wealthiest residents lived. The untouchables. The people who could buy the entire city, if they wanted to.Most delivery drivers if not all avoided it. The stories alone were reason enough. Strange residents. Disappearing staff. Security guards that looked like they ate concrete for breakfast. Nobody knew how much of it was true.Unfortunately, I couldn't afford to care. I accepted the order.Immediately, my phone buzzed. It was Caleb.Caleb: I'm sorry about the drama with my mum and Genevieve.Me: Thanks for apolo

  • THE DEVIL'S BRIDE   CHAPTER THREE

Evelina's POVIf exhaustion was a person, I would have punched it in the face by now. The sun had barely risen, yet I'd already been awake for nearly twenty-four hours.I rode through the city streets with a paper cup of coffee balanced dangerously in the holder attached to my motorcycle. My eyes burned. My shoulders ached. But my bank account was crying. Life was fantastic."Maybe I should start robbing banks," I muttered. A pedestrian walking past looked horrified. "Relax. I'm joking..." He walked faster instead.By eight in the morning, I was already pulling into the small logistics company where I worked as an independent delivery rider.NippyZippy Logistics. The building was tucked between a mechanic workshop and a furniture warehouse, with a loading bay in the back and a small reception office at the front. But it paid and right now, that was all that mattered.I parked my motorcycle and walked inside."Morning, Eve," one of the dispatchers called."Morning."I walked over to th

  • THE DEVIL'S BRIDE   CHAPTER TWO

Evelina's POVThe cold night air rushed past me as I rode home. Usually, riding helped clear my head. Tonight, it did absolutely nothing. Two weeks without pay. The words kept replaying in my mind like a broken record."Great," I muttered into the wind. "Just great."The motorcycle rumbled beneath me as I tightened my grip on the handlebars. I couldn't afford to fall apart.Twenty minutes later, I pulled into the small driveway of our house. At least the one thing I didn't have to worry about was rent.Dad had worked himself half to death to finish paying for this place before he passed away. It wasn't fancy. The roof creaked when it rained and the paint was peeling in different places, but it was ours.I parked the motorcycle and headed inside. The house felt too quiet without Mum. I tossed my helmet onto the couch and immediately grabbed my phone. I wanted to talk to Caleb, my best friend from childhood.Me: You awake? The reply came almost instantly.Caleb: For you? Always.I rolled
