BIANCA’S POV

The clock ticked louder than usual and I hated that I noticed it. I sat on the couch with my hands folded neatly on my lap while my therapist scribbled something into her notepad. I knew the routine by now.

“How was your week?” Dr Yara asked without looking up.

I thought about lying. I wanted to say it was fine. That I was adjusting. That I wasn’t waking up with my hands clenched or checking the windows twice before bed. But I didn’t come all the way to this small town to pretend.

“I didn’t leave the house,” I said. “Except for groceries. And even that was a disaster.”

“Did you run into anyone?”

I shook my head. “No.”

“Did you want to?”

“No.”

She finally looked up. “You’ve been here for a year now. You’ve done well. You’ve made progress. But I think you’re holding on to something that’s keeping you in survival mode.”

I stared at the wall behind her.

“You don’t have to say it out loud,” she added. “Just sit with the thought. What are you afraid will happen if you start liv

  • THE DEVIL’S CHOKEHOLD    ARYA

I opened my eyes slowly and stared at the ceiling. I was still on the floor of Bianca’s apartment. My shirt was soaked and stiff from the blood on my nose. Only heaven knows how long I was out. It was dark outside My body ached from the fall but my mind felt clear. Clearer than it had been in a year. I sat up. My limbs protested but I moved anyway. I grabbed the photo of her from the floor and held it in my hands. Her eyes were focused ahead in the picture but I felt like she was looking right at me. I remembered everything. The dock. The shooting. The murders. The kidnapping. Vega. Bianca. Her laugh. Her voice. Her scent. I stood and grabbed my phone. I had been crawling in the dark, but I wasn’t blind anymore. I called the only number I could trust. “Gianni.” A pause. Then a voice filled with disbelief. “Roberto?” “I need a full trace on a subject. I’ll send you details in five. I need everything on her if she crossed state lines. If someone helped her disappear o

  • THE DEVIL’S CHOKEHOLD    HER VOICE, HER LAUGH, AND HER VENOM

ROB’S POVI had been waiting in the hospital reception area for a while now. Fortunately for me, the doctor on duty the day of the accident was on duty today. She was rounding up a patient.“Mr Grimani. I was busy with a patient.”I stood and took her hand in a handshake. “Thank you for seeing me.”She gestured for me to follow her to her office. “Before things go too far, I have no idea where she was buried if that’s why you’re here,” she said.I nodded and followed her into a small office tucked between two hallways. She shut the door behind us and sat down across from me.“I just want the truth,” I said. She folded her hands on the desk. “Bianca Marcelo was admitted here almost a year ago. She was unconscious. We had no ID on her. Her body was pulled from a car crash on the expressway. There was no one to notify and no family came forward.”“Was she dead when she arrived?”“She had a pulse when the paramedics brought her in but she coded during surgery. The records show she was p

  • THE DEVIL’S CHOKEHOLD    FINDING HER GRAVE

I got off the plane and was sitting in the airport waiting for about an hour. Nothing had struck my memory. I had no idea where to go from here. Where in New York did she live? Or worked? I played the audio again but nothing struck until I saw the file name. “vid.00.BMarcelo.divorce.recording9988.mp4” B Marcello. I brought out my laptop and researched the name. I made sure to check that the search range was just in New York. Articles popped up about a firm scandal. I clicked on the first link. “TRAGEDY AT CLARKE & ASSOCIATES LLP.” “Bianca Marcelo named as person of interest in murder of Mrs. Bayern and CEO Brown Clarke.” There was a photo of her shielded from the camera by a tall man. Me. In the photo she was wearing a tailored suit and so Kate’s. I was glaring at the camera and shielding her face from view. A faint memory of heel clicks came to mind. And fire at a particular office. My head hurt badly. I needed to pause but I couldn’t. It didn’t make the

ROBI know now that I’m married and it wasn’t to Vanessa. The lady’s voice brought me so much comfort after a year of constant aching even though her words were cruel.I felt this fire deep inside. What had been missing with Vanessa all these while. I transferred the recording to the new phone I got after my recovery. My old phone would help to completely restore my memory but it was gone.Honestly, could I handle it? I almost blacked out from just the one memory. I should definitely take it slow before I trigger another brain trauma. I zipped up the duffel bag and took it to my bedroom. I hide it under the bed base.“Honey, we’re back.”Vanessa’s voice floated in just as I finished cleaning up the blood. Fortunately, I had ordered flowers earlier so I pretended like I was fixing it on her bed.“This is to say I’m sorry, babe,” I said as soon as she stepped into her bedroom.A smile formed on her face. I wondered how many more lies she had told me. “Aww. You didn’t have to,” she s

  • THE DEVIL’S CHOKEHOLD    DUE TIME

ONE YEAR LATER ROB’S POV “Rob?” I turned. Vanessa stood in the doorway wearing a short robe and that same smile she always used when she wanted something. “Hey babe,” I said. “There’s breakfast,” she added as she leaned in and kissed me. “Julian made coffee.” I nodded but didn’t move. She walked over and sat on my lap. “You haven’t been sleeping again. You’re scaring me.” “I’m fine.” “You’re not,” she said. Her voice was soft but strained. “You wake up angry. You keep going outside at night. You look at things like they’re supposed to remind you of something.” I didn’t respond. “You haven’t let yourself move on.” “From what?” I asked, even though I already knew the answer. “From the accident.,” she said. “It’s been a year and you’re still stuck in that space.” That was because something wasn’t right. There was this numb ache in my chest that never went away, like something important had been ripped out, but I couldn’t figure out what. “I will in due time
