Cassandra sat in the darkness of the cottage, staring at nothing.

The drive back had been a blur. She didn't remember the road, the turns, the rain pounding against the windshield. She just remembered the look on Evelyn's face. The crumpling of her features. The tears streaming down her cheeks.

I wanted to protect you. I didn't think—

Cassandra had walked out without saying a word. She couldn't speak. Couldn't breathe. The woman who raised her. The woman who held her when she cried, who tucked her in at night, who sacrificed everything to keep her safe—had betrayed her mother.

She sold out her mother to protect you, Marcus's voice echoed in her head. She's been living with that guilt for twenty years.

Cassandra pressed her palms against her eyes, trying to stop the tears that wouldn't come. She was hollow. Empty. There was nothing left to feel.

She heard the door open, but she didn't turn. She felt Dante's presence beside her before he sat down. He didn't speak. He just rested his hand on her back, a warm, steady anchor.

They sat in silence for hours.

---

The next morning, Cassandra's phone rang.

She stared at the screen. It was Evelyn's number. Her heart clenched. She didn't want to answer. She wanted to scream. She wanted to break something. But she answered anyway.

"Cassandra," Evelyn's voice was raw, broken. "Please, baby, please let me explain."

Cassandra didn't speak. She just waited.

"I didn't want to do it," Evelyn sobbed. "I never wanted to hurt your mother. But Vincent came to me. He said if Grace didn't stop investigating, he would kill you. You were just a baby, Cassandra. You were so small. I couldn't lose you. I couldn't."

Cassandra's throat tightened. "So you gave her up."

"I thought I could protect her. I thought if I gave him what he wanted, he would let her go. I was wrong. I was so wrong." Evelyn's voice cracked. "I've been living with this guilt every single day. Every time I looked at you, I saw her. I saw what I did."

Cassandra closed her eyes. "Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I was ashamed. Because I was terrified you'd hate me." Evelyn sobbed. "And I was right. I deserve it. I deserve to lose you."

Cassandra was silent for a long moment. She was angry. She was devastated. But she also understood. Her grandmother had been faced with an impossible choice—her daughter or her granddaughter. And she'd chosen the child who couldn't protect herself.

"I don't forgive you," Cassandra said quietly. "Not yet. But I understand."

She ended the call.

---

Dante found her in the garden, sitting on the stone bench.

He sat beside her, his hand finding hers. "I found something."

She looked at him, her eyes dull. "What?"

"Financial records. Hidden accounts. Linking Marcus Kane to Vincent Moretti." He squeezed her hand. "It proves the conspiracy goes deeper than we imagined. And it proves Evelyn's involvement was limited to protecting you."

Cassandra stared at the papers. "So my mother was right. There was a conspiracy. And Vincent was part of it."

"Yes." He paused. "But Evelyn wasn't. She did what she had to do to keep you alive."

Cassandra's eyes burned with tears. "She let my mother die."

"She made a choice. A terrible choice. But she made it because she loved you." Dante's voice was soft. "Sometimes love forces us to do unforgivable things."

Cassandra looked at him. "Is that what you tell yourself? When you keep secrets? When you lie?"

His jaw tightened. "I don't know. But I know I would do anything to protect you. Anything."

She leaned into him, her head resting on his shoulder. "I don't know if I can forgive her."

"You don't have to forgive her. You just have to let go."

---

That afternoon, Cassandra went back to Evelyn's house.

Her grandmother was sitting in the kitchen, her face pale, her hands trembling. She looked smaller than Cassandra remembered. Frail. Broken.

Cassandra walked in and sat across from her.

"I'm not going to let this destroy our family," she said quietly. "I love you. I've always loved you. But I'm not ready to forgive you. Not yet."

Evelyn nodded, tears streaming down her cheeks. "I don't deserve your forgiveness."

"That's not for you to decide."

Cassandra reached across the table, her hand covering her grandmother's. Evelyn broke down, sobbing, clinging to her granddaughter's hand like it was the only thing keeping her tethered to the earth.

"I love you," Evelyn choked out. "I love you so much."

Cassandra squeezed her hand. "I know, Gran. I know."

---

That night, Cassandra received a text from an unknown number.

You want the truth? Meet me at the old church. Come alone. Your grandmother's life depends on it.

Cassandra stared at the screen, her blood running cold. Her hands shook. The old church was abandoned, miles from anywhere. And the message was clear.

Come alone.

She couldn't tell Dante. He would try to stop her. He would try to protect her. And she couldn't risk her grandmother's life.

She grabbed her keys and slipped out the door. The rain was falling again, the sky black and unforgiving. She drove toward the church, her hands gripping the steering wheel, her heart pounding.

She didn't know what she was walking into. But she knew she had to go.

For her mother. For her grandmother. For the truth.

The church loomed in the distance, dark and foreboding. Cassandra parked and stepped out into the rain. The door was open, creaking on its hinges. She walked inside, her footsteps echoing against the cold stone.

"Welcome, Cassandra."

She spun around. Marcus Kane stood in the shadows, his smile cold and cruel.

"I knew you'd come."

  • THE DON'S MISSING PIECE    Brothers United

Cassandra stood frozen in the doorway of the café.The man sitting beside Adrian had her eyes. Her nose. Her chin. He was older—gray streaked through his dark hair, lines etched around his eyes—but the resemblance was unmistakable. It was like looking into a mirror that showed her future."Cassandra," Adrian said softly, rising from his chair. "This is Daniel. Your father."Her father. The word felt foreign. Wrong. She'd spent her whole life believing her father was dead—a man she'd never known, a loss she'd mourned without ever understanding. And now here he was. Alive. Real. Sitting across from her like a ghost made flesh. She didn't move.Daniel stood slowly, his hands clasped in front of him. His eyes—her eyes—were filled with something she couldn't name. Regret.
