Franco Moretti had a ritual before every significant evening.

I learned this from Giulia the day before, delivered in that quiet voice she used for information she was giving me without technically giving me. Franco bathed at six, dressed at seven, had one glass of Barolo alone in whatever room was available before joining the rest of the evening.

No exceptions. No interruptions during that hour. The ritual had existed since before Luca was born and would exist until Franco was in the ground.

  • THE DON'S SECRET HEIR   The Name of a Price

Every name in this world had a price. Not a fixed price the market for names was more volatile than any legitimate financial instrument, rising and falling with the specific conditions of power and perception and the accumulated weight of decisions made and unmade over years. A name that meant everything in one decade could mean considerably less in the next if the decisions that had built it were not continuously maintained. My father's name had been worth something specific.Carlo Greco. The Wolf of Naples. Built over thirty years through a specific combination of force and patience and the particular intelligence of a man who understood that the most durable power was the kind that made itself necessary rather than merely feared. After he died the Greco name had a question attached to it.Not immediately the combined Greco-Moretti operation had managed the transition with enough smoothness that the external question had never become visible instability. But inside the world, in t

  • THE DON'S SECRET HEIR   What That Changes In A Man

The first thing it changed was sleep. Not immediately Klaus had been functioning well enough in the weeks after, the operational requirements of a foot soldier's life not pausing for interior adjustment. He had continued the route. Collected what needed collecting. Delivered what needed delivering. Reported back in the specific compressed language of men who communicated operational information and nothing else. But at night the sleep was different. Not nightmares exactly he had been specific about this in the hotel room. Not the dramatic version of what he had expected. Something quieter and more persistent. A specific quality of wakefulness at three in the morning that he hadn't experienced before. Lying in the dark of his mother's house in the street two over from the Greco estate and looking at the ceiling and understanding that the ceiling was the same ceiling he had looked at his whole life and that he was not the same person who had looked at it before. That was the first cha

  • THE DON'S SECRET HEIR   Klaus's First Kill

Klaus was twenty three years old when it happened. Not in the north this was before the north, before the forty thousand euros and the Ferro relationship and the operation built on keeping his word. This was still the Greco estate world. Still the foot soldier years. Still the specific reality of being at the bottom of a structure that required certain things from the people at the bottom and did not ask whether those people had wanted to be required of those things. He had told me about it years after. Not the night in the flat above the hardware shop that night had been for other things, for the real things, for the specific intimacy of two people who understood they were entering a before and after. He had told me during the long conversation after the formalisation meeting, in the hotel room that had emptied out and left just us and the oval table and the afternoon light. The way he told it was the way he told most things that cost him something.Plainly. Without decoration. The

  • THE DON'S SECRET HEIR   Blood On New Ground

Blood on new ground meant something different than blood on established territory.Established territory had history. The violence that happened within it carried the weight of that history it was legible, contextualised, understood by the people who witnessed it as part of the ongoing story of a place and its power structures. Brutal but readable. The community knew what it meant.New ground was different.New ground violence was harder to read because the story of the place wasn't written yet. The parties weren't fully known, the alignments weren't established, the specific grammar of what was acceptable and what crossed lines hadn't been agreed. Violence on new ground created instability in a way that established territory violence didn't because nobody knew yet what it signalled. The western quarter in the second year of the territory wars became new ground in this sense. And the blood that appeared on it was the specific kind that changed everything. The man's name was Pellegrin

  • THE DON'S SECRET HEIR   The First Consultation

September came to the central territory warm and clear. The fourteenth site rebuild was three weeks complete.Rhen had finished on schedule. The new stone on the old foundation. The circular hall standing for the first time in two hundred years. Not large. The coordination point did not need to be. It needed to be functional. It needed to hold the relationship that was about to resume in a space designed for exactly that purpose.I had stood in it the week before the consultation.Felt the difference between the foundation and the finished hall. The foundation had been active. That current quality. Something designed to facilitate exchange waiting to facilitate it.The finished hall was that multiplied.Like the difference between a river channel and water running in it.The channel had always been there. Now the water was moving. We arrived on a Wednesday morning. Not just me and Dane and Adaeze this time.Efua. Because she had done the bond health work that produced the specific dat

  • THE DON'S SECRET HEIR   The Territory Wars

The territory wars came in Viktor's second year. Not wars in the declared sense nothing in this world was declared cleanly. More like the specific acceleration of tensions that had been building since the Caruso withdrawal and the Kosta arrangement and the specific power vacuum that Barone's removal had left in the western quarter. A vacuum that multiple mid-level operators had been eyeing with the patient attention of people who understood that vacuums didn't stay vacant and that the question was not whether someone filled it but who.Three families had been the primary candidates. The Esposito family no relation to the Esposito whose fingers had communicated a message years ago, the surname was common enough in Naples to produce these coincidences regularly. A mid-level operation based in the western quarter's northern edge with the specific ambition of something that had been small for a generation and had decided that one generation of smallness was enough. The Ricci operation

  • THE DON'S SECRET HEIR   What It Costs To Become Someone

Becoming someone cost everything you had been before. Not in the dramatic sense of erasure you didn't stop being the thing you had been. You carried it. The nine-year-old in the garden, the fifteen-year-old at the oak tree, the twenty-two-year-old saying yes at a breakfast table to save the person

  • THE DON'S SECRET HEIR   Klaus Builds North

Klaus had started building north with forty thousand euros and a contact he trusted completely. Not much by the standards of what he was building toward. But enough the right amount at the right moment with the right person behind it. That was something he had understood from watching the Greco op

  • THE DON'S SECRET HEIR   The Question

The question Viktor asked was not the one I had prepared for.I had prepared for the obvious ones. The ones that seven-year-old logic produced when working through something large and new. Why didn't you tell me before. Does Klaus know about me. Is he nice. Will he come to my football match. The pr

  • THE DON'S SECRET HEIR   Old Ground

The formalisation meeting was at ten.Neutral ground a private room in a hotel in the centre of the city that had been used for exactly this category of meeting enough times that its staff had developed the specific professional blindness of people who understood that their continued employment de
