The night of the monstrous birth…

A painful scream ripped through the wall of Blackthorn Manor. So raw that no one will believe it was from a highborn woman in labor.

‘Where is he? Where is my husband?’ She snarled as she dug her fingers deeper into the soft cotton below her. The only thing that seemed soft about the night.

Just an hour ago, the Duke had promised to be by her side while she gave birth to their child, whom they had prayed and hoped for all these years.

He had kissed her hand at the dining table and assured her that everything would be fine.

Now he was gone. Vanished. And no one dared to tell her what the hell had happened to him.

Pain - worse than what the midwives had warned that she might experience - split through her spine like fire, and she wondered if that was how some women ended up being paralyzed during birth.

Oh no, she won’t. She had to fight through the pain and be alive for her baby.

She shut her eyes and whispered silent prayers to the Virgin Mother, completely blind to the fear and dangers that surrounded her, and the evil that lurked in every crack and corner of the manor.

The midwives stood in front of her with trembling hands and fear guiding their every step - making them stumble into each other at some point.

One of them stopped to stare at her belly and pointed feebly at the unusual movement over the duchess's tummy as she mumbled.

‘H-h-her b-belly’ her voice, though in a low whisper, echoed lightly through the already deserted walls of the manor, which was now lighted by the eerie shadows the blood moon that had appeared in the sky, towering over the manor cast in the house.

As if waiting to witness the birth of the monster.

Somehow, words had made rounds in the manor amongst every servant and soldier about the mysterious birth, and on the same night, the blood moon appeared after so many years.

It didn’t help that The Duke was also found dead not long after dinner in the store room, hanging from the rafters with his eyes popping out of his tiny head.

Everyone had silently disappeared. Each returned to his own home in the village and told twisted tales, even the queen, who was still mad at her loving husband, was oblivious to. Leaving the midwives and the lady in waiting to their miserable fate.

‘Help me,’ The duchess whispered in a raspy voice, ‘Please get it out of me.’ She sobbed weakly as her hands lay limp beside her.

Her lady-in-waiting moved closer to her and bent forward to touch her belly. The spot where her hands rested lit up in a bright orange light, and the midwives shrank back in fear and shock.

The servant stepped back and, in one command, ordered the midwives to cut through the duchess's abdomen.

‘But we can’t do that. She has to give birth natur-’ her words were cut short as a shadow appeared from the darkness and wrapped invisible hands around her neck and lifted her until she was hanging loosely in the air.

The second midwife got on her knees immediately and fumbled through her apron for her birthing knife. Her hands were trembling as she tried to cut smoothly through the duchess's abdomen, but the tears that blurred her eyes wouldn’t even let her do a perfect job.

She shut her eyes tightly as the blade sliced through the skin, and blood slowly gushed out.

The duchess was too weak to scream, but her body quaked with the pain tearing through her.

The young, inexperienced midwife turned to puke at the sight of so much blood as the womb finally lay opened in front of her.

A hand roughly grabbed her as she tried to get up, and when she raised her head, her eyes settled on the duchess, who was looking at her with a mixture of pain, fear, and…death.

‘Where is my husband?’ she asked as her hands tightened around her hands, and the midwife was not sure at that moment if the duchess was also possessed by whatever had taken over the manor.

She dared not lie to her, as she feared what might become her fate too.

‘Dead! He is dead’ she replied abruptly with wide eyes fixed with fear. She felt the hand around her arms loosen slowly, and a new wave of pain crossed the duchess’s eyes.

When the guttural scream escaped the duchess's throat a few seconds later, the midwife was not sure if it was from the news of her husband’s death or the gory sight of blood as the lady in waiting practically tore the baby from its mother’s womb without due process.

The duchess looked down at the woman who stood between her thighs with her child in her arms, as her voice died down and life slipped away from her body.

She could sense her death as much as she could now see the evil lurking in every corner of the room.

She stretched out her hand to her baby, even when she knew there was no point now. She couldn’t even make out the face of the woman carrying her child.

From where she lay bleeding out, she could only see the dark shape of a woman, with the blood moon behind her like a crown, casting its increasing brightness on her.

She had to do one thing. At least if she couldn’t hold her baby, she could name him or her.

‘Lucien,’ she whispered as a tear trickled down the corners of her eyes.

She and the duke had waited all those years for this very night, and they didn’t even get to see the face of their child or even hold it in their arms.

Lucien was definitely not the name she and her husband had hoped to name their son - as the priest prophesied - but it didn’t matter anymore.

With her last strength, she pulled the crystal from her neck and handed it over to the midwife, still crunched beside her in absolute fear.

‘Lucien,’ she whispered again.

A wolf howled in the distance, and the building came alive with ethereal cries of spirits and shadows, as the woman raised the baby - still covered in blood and an umbilical cord - up into the air.

It was the night that changed Blackthorn Manor.

  • THE DUKE'S VIRGIN SACRIFICE   FIELD DAY

Elisa…The coming days did nothing to make me feel better about myself.Even when I found out the girl was still alive, but gravely ill.And like a punishment for my own crime, the next few nights tormented my body in a way I had never experienced. My body burned with fever, leaving me to sweat all night and shiver all day like a wet leaf, in winter. It didn’t help that the nightmares were back - incoherent faces that told no real tale but snippets of a danger I was already living in.“I told you you needed to get out of that gown. You haven’t even seen a thing yet. I wonder how you will survive the field in the coming days,” the girl said to me one night when I shivered so badly that I kept throwing up.Everyone had moved as far away from me as possible, as if I carried a curse they didn’t want to share in.They would rather move to the feared end of the room than come close to the sickly girl who was touched.I pretended not to hear what she had said, even when I wanted to ask her w

  • THE DUKE'S VIRGIN SACRIFICE   A LITTLE MORE TIME

Lucien…I found her…I found her crouched in the garden over the swollen earth that marked my parents’ graves. She had her back to me as she bent forward on the grave and did something I could not see from where I was.I stood there for what seemed like an eternity and wondered what to think, what to do.I had never allowed anyone around their graves. It was the only thing in my cursed life that I could still guard with jealousy as only mine. A sacred space I alone had shared with them since I was born and old enough to understand a few things.Watching her kneeling there like she was in her own space, too, unsettled me in different ways.It annoyed me as much as it melted my insides. But I just couldn’t let her in yet.No! I wasn’t ready to share that part of my life yet, no matter how empty it was.“W-what are you doing there?” I finally asked after what seemed like an eternity of standing there and watching her move, but not enough for me to see what she was doing. She turned slowl

  • THE DUKE'S VIRGIN SACRIFICE   I DARE YOU TO SAY A WORD

Elisa…Long after the whole cell had gone silent, and the small light from a window very high in the wall had disappeared, I felt a hand jab me abruptly from my sleep.I wouldn’t even call it a normal sleep when I could still feel tiny worms in my stomach eating me up from the inside, since they haven’t had any food.I jerked awake instantly and looked into the darkness at no one in particular. The hand jabbed my side again, and my weak, hungry heart began to beat rapidly.I thought of the women at the far end of the room.Had they noticed how weak I was during the day and decided I could be a good meal?I opened my mouth to scream, but only a whimper escaped my mouth, and a hand suddenly closed my mouth. There was no strength left in me for a struggle, but my hands still tried to fight back.“Shh,” the voice was so close to my ears, and my heartbeat slowed its pace. The hand finally came off my mouth at last, and in its place, a fishy smell hit my nose, and finally my mouth.I didn’t

  • THE DUKE'S VIRGIN SACRIFICE   WHO ARE YOU?

Lucien…‘Son of Thorne, the last great son of Odin…’The voice was loud and shook the whole manor like an earthquake…Or was I somewhere else?I was surrounded by darkness and lightning, with an ominous red ball in the sky, casting eerie shadows over the empty land around me.I turned around, still standing at one spot, and tried to recall the last time I had heard that voice.‘You are still a long way from becoming a man, but still too close to losing your youth,’ the voice echoed, and I stopped moving and just stared straight into the sky, as if what I was looking for was in there.“Who are you?”‘I am your father, and your father before you,’ the voice seemed to be standing in front of me at some point, then beside me, and then far away from me.‘I am you, son, ’ it came from behind me this time.“Then why don’t you show yourself?” Kieran growled from within me.I was beginning to wonder if it was one of my nightmares or if I was really awake. Then how did I get here?‘I see you f

  • THE DUKE'S VIRGIN SACRIFICE   I KNOW YOU

Elisa…There was no use in fighting anymore.I staggered back weakly as I watched one of the guards raise the serving spoon and hit it loudly and continuously on the pot, announcing that the soup had finished.I watched aswomen mumbled but stayed around, still waiting for something that might not come.I wanted to stand and wait too; maybe there was just a little more. But I was so far behind to even hope for a tiny leftover.I staggered back to the end of the room, wishing I had not even left my spot in the first place. My body slid down the wall slowly, and my legs gave in before I could position myself well enough to sit.I leaned my head against the wall, listening to my stomach rumble with emptiness, and my body slowly jerking with pain and desperation.I will be dead soon.I can see it all so clearly now. There is no way I will survive another day without food. Those flesh eaters will have me before the guards do, and there was nothing I could do about it.I shut my eyes and wis

  • THE DUKE'S VIRGIN SACRIFICE   MOVE AWAY

Elisa…Days passed.Days that dragged on like decades, and it was during that time that I realized why many of them were quiet, while others forced me to remain quiet. It was due to hunger, and the strong sea wind that sometimes swept into the darkness and swallowed away every last drop of energy in our bodies as it tossed lifeless forms left and right in the room.I sat at the same corner of the room where I had been since the first day I was brought in, with my head hanging weakly against the wooden wall.It was the safest place to be, at least. Each time the wind came, I only had to hold on to a hanging chain from the wall until the wind stopped.Once, my hand had slipped from the slimy chain, but was held back from flying to the other end of the room by the young girl who remained close to me.Her weak frame had held on tightly to my hands until the wind subsided, and in between that moment, tears had slipped from her eyes, from the unbearable pain of holding on to me.One woman b
