"You've been busy, Vivian."

The voice came from behind her, smooth and cold. Vivian's blood turned to ice. She spun around, her heart slamming against her ribs. Damian stood in the doorway of the library, his silver-grey eyes fixed on her face. He was holding something in his hand. A photograph.

Her photograph.

"I was just—" she started, but the words died in her throat.

"Looking for answers?" He stepped into the room, his footsteps slow and deliberate. "I told you not to open that door, Vivian. I warned you what would happen if you kept digging."

"You didn't warn me about anything," she said, her voice shaking. "You just told me to stay away from the attic. You never told me why."

"Because you weren't ready." He stopped a few feet away, holding up the photograph. "You found these, didn't you? The photographs."

She didn't answer. She didn't need to.

"Who are they?" she asked instead. "Who are all those women?"

Damian's expression didn't change. "You always ask the wrong questions, Vivian."

"Then what's the right question?"

He was quiet for a moment, studying her face. Then he said, "The right question is: why do you keep searching for things that will only hurt you?"

"Because I deserve to know the truth."

"The truth." He laughed, a soft, hollow sound. "You think the truth will set you free. You think knowing will make everything better." He shook his head slowly. "Some things are better left buried, Vivian. Some doors are locked for a reason."

"Then unlock them." She stepped closer, her hands trembling. "Tell me who those women are. Tell me why you have photographs of women who look like me. Tell me the truth, Damian."

He was quiet for a long moment. The clock on the mantel ticked loudly, marking each agonizing second. Then he said, "I've been trying to protect you. I've been trying to keep you safe from the things you don't understand."

"Then help me understand."

"You can't handle it." His voice was cold now, hard as stone. "You think you can, but you can't. The truth would destroy you."

"It would set me free."

"It would shatter you." He stepped closer, his eyes burning. "You've built your entire life on a foundation of things you don't know. If I tell you the truth, that foundation crumbles. Everything you believe about yourself, about your family, about your past—gone. Is that what you want?"

She held his gaze. "I want to know who I really am."

"You're Vivian Carrington." His voice was flat, final. "You're my sister. You're my family. That's all you need to know."

"I'm not your sister." She shook her head slowly. "I never was."

"You are." His voice cracked, a flash of something raw and desperate. "You are, and you will always be. I don't care what the papers say. I don't care what the letter says. You're my sister, and I will never let you go."

"I'm not your sister," she said again, her voice stronger now. "And I'm done pretending."

She turned to leave, but his hand shot out, grabbing her wrist. His grip was strong, bruising.

"You're not going anywhere," he said, his voice low and dangerous. "You're staying here. You're staying with me."

Vivian wrenched her arm free, her heart pounding. "Try and stop me."

She ran.

---

She didn't stop running until she reached her bedroom. She slammed the door shut and locked it, her chest heaving. Her hands were shaking, her pulse racing. She pressed her back against the door, trying to catch her breath.

She had to leave. She had to get out of this house before he trapped her like he'd trapped the others.

She grabbed her bag and started throwing clothes into it. Her phone, her wallet, the letter and the birth certificate. She didn't know where she was going, but she knew she couldn't stay here.

A knock on the door.

"Vivian." Damian's voice came through the wood, calm and controlled. "Open the door."

"Go away."

"Vivian, I'm not going to hurt you. I would never hurt you. You're my sister. You're my family."

"You don't have a family," she said, her voice cracking. "You destroyed your family. You killed Emilia. You killed your parents. And now you're trying to destroy me."

Silence. Then, softer: "I'm not going to destroy you, Vivian. I'm trying to save you."

"From what?"

"From the world." His voice was almost a whisper. "The world is cruel. It would take you away from me. It would destroy you. I won't let that happen."

She pressed her hand to her mouth, fighting back tears. He was insane. He was completely insane. And she was trapped in a house with him.

"Vivian," he said through the door, "I need you to understand something. I will protect you, no matter what it takes. I will keep you safe. And I will never, ever let you leave."

She didn't answer. She couldn't.

She tried the door again. The key still worked. The windows were still sealed. But as she reached for her phone, she noticed something. No signal. The bars were gone. She tried to call—nothing. He'd cut her off from the outside.

A soft click echoed from the door. Her blood ran cold. She stared at the lock, watching as it turned from the other side.

She was trapped.

Marcus was summoned to Damian's study on the fourth morning.Vivian did not know about it until later. She was in the kitchen when she heard two servants whispering near the pantry. "The master called for Hale this morning." "He looked furious."Vivian kept her head down and continued washing dishes. But her hands had gone cold. Damian had summoned Marcus. Damian was angry. And she had no way of knowing what had happened behind that closed door. She spent the rest of the morning moving through her tasks mechanically. By midday, she had still not seen him.---Marcus did not appear in the garden that afternoon.Vivian waited by the hedge, pretending to gather herbs, but he never came. She waited until the sun began to set, until the air grew cold, until she could no longer justify staying outside. Then she returned to the servant's quarters with a knot in her stomach. She excused herself early from the evening meal and retreated to her room. She sat on the cot with her back against the

Vivian returned to the mansion before dawn. She had spent the night in the city, wandering through streets she did not know, trying to decide whether to run or return. In the end, she had chosen to come back. Not because she wanted to. But because leaving meant abandoning Marcus, and she could not do that. The service tunnel was still unlocked. She slipped through it and made her way back to the servant's quarters, her heart pounding with every step. No one saw her. No one stopped her. She reached her room and locked the door behind her.But as she sat on the cot, she thought about the footsteps she had heard in the tunnel. Someone had followed her. Someone had seen her leave. And she did not know who.---The morning passed in a blur.Vivian moved through her tasks mechanically, her mind elsewhere. She carried trays. She folded linens. She avoided eye contact with everyone she passed. But she felt watched. She felt the weight of unseen eyes on her back.By midday, she understood why.

Two days passed without a word from Marcus.Vivian counted the hours. She counted them while she scrubbed the kitchen floors, while she folded linens in the laundry room, while she carried trays to rooms she was not supposed to enter. She counted them until the counting itself became a kind of prayer. On the first day, she told herself he was simply being careful. Marcus had contacts to meet, evidence to hand over, people to warn. These things took time. On the second day, she began to worry.By the evening of the second day, she was standing at her window, staring out at the darkened grounds, searching for any sign of movement. There was none. The garden was empty. The gates were closed. The house was silent.Marcus had promised two days. The two days were almost gone.---That night, Vivian did not sleep. She sat on the cot with her back against the wall, the key to the service tunnel clutched in her hand. She had not let it go since Marcus had given it to her. It was the only thing

The days that followed passed like a slow poison.Vivian noticed the changes immediately, though they were so small that anyone else might have missed them. The doors to the west wing were locked now every single one. The corridors she had learned to move through so easily were sealed off, one by one, like a house slowly closing its eyes. She tested each lock in the quiet hours before dawn and found them all the same. New locks. Heavy and cold.---The garden was next.Five days after Damian's confession, Vivian was sent outside to gather herbs and found the gate at the eastern wall padlocked. She stood there for a long moment, staring at the metal chain, and felt something cold settle in her stomach. She had used that gate before. She had stood at that gate with Marcus and whispered about evidence and plans and the night they would break into Richard's study. That gate had been her way out. Her way to breathe. Now it is closed.---The servants noticed nothing. They still gossiped in

  • THE FAKE HEIRESS and Her OBSESSIVE BROTHER   Chapter 48: The Confession

Vivian did not sleep that night. She could not stop thinking about the photograph Damian had shown her. The garden. The roses. The places she used to hide. Whatever Damian knew about her past, he had known it long before she realized he was watching. But she had not broken. She had not given him what he wanted. And that was something. The next morning, Vivian rose before dawn. She dressed quickly and made her way to the kitchen, her mind still churning. She needed to act normal. She needed to be invisible. But as she stepped into the corridor, she saw him. Damian stood at the end of the hallway, waiting."Sarah." His voice was calm. "Come with me."Vivian's heart pounded. She wanted to refuse. She wanted to run. But she couldn't. She had to play her part. She followed him.---He led her through a series of corridors she had never seen before, past rooms that had been sealed for years. Finally, he stopped in front of a door. "This was Emilia's room," he said.Vivian's blood ran cold.

The next morning, Vivian woke before dawn. She had barely slept. The documents were hidden beneath her mattress. The photograph was tucked inside her uniform. She had spent the night staring at the ceiling, thinking about what she had found in Richard's study. But as she stepped into the corridor, she heard a voice."Sarah."She froze. Damian stood at the end of the hallway. He was dressed in his usual dark suit, his expression unreadable. He walked toward her slowly, his footsteps echoing against the stone floor."I was hoping I would find you."Vivian forced herself to remain calm. "Is something wrong, sir?""No." Damian stopped a few feet away. "I just wanted to talk."---He studied her for a long moment. Then he said, "I've been thinking about our conversation at dinner."Vivian said nothing."You reminded me of someone. Someone I used to know." Damian paused. "Someone I lost.""I'm sorry to hear that, sir.""Are you?" Damian tilted his head. "Because I think you might know who I
