"Going somewhere?"

The voice came from behind her, smooth and cold. Vivian spun around, her heart slamming against her ribs. Damian stood in the doorway of her bedroom, his silver-grey eyes fixed on her face. He was holding something in his hand. A key. Her key.

She'd been so close. So close to freedom.

"Let me go," she said, her voice shaking. "Please. Just let me go."

Damian stepped into the room, his movements slow and deliberate. He closed the door behind him with a soft click that echoed through the silence. "You know I can't do that, Vivian. You're my sister. You're my family. You belong here."

"I'm not your sister." Her voice cracked. "I never was. You stole me from my real family. You stole my life."

"I gave you a life." He walked toward her, his eyes never leaving her face. "I gave you everything. A home, a name, a purpose. You were nothing before I found you. I made you something."

"You made me a prisoner."

"A beloved prisoner." He stopped a few feet away, his expression softening. "You've always been my favorite thing, Vivian. My most precious possession." He reached out, brushing a strand of hair from her face. "I'll never let you go."

She flinched away from his touch, her stomach churning. "You can't keep me here forever."

"Run if you must." He smiled, cold and knowing. "You'll discover the world isn't safer than I am."

He turned and walked out, taking the key with him. The lock clicked into place, and she was trapped.

---

She stood in the middle of her bedroom, staring at the locked door. Her hands were shaking, her pulse racing. She'd tried to escape. She'd tried to fight back. But he was always one step ahead.

She thought about the other women. The photographs. The girls who looked like her. The ones who came before her and the ones who would come after. She didn't know what had happened to them. She didn't know if they were alive or dead. But she knew one thing: she wasn't going to become one of them.

She paced the room, her mind racing. The window was sealed. The door was locked. Her phone had no signal. She was trapped. But there had to be a way out.

She remembered something. Years ago, when she was a child, she'd discovered a hidden passage in the back of her closet. She'd been playing hide-and-seek with a servant girl and had stumbled into a narrow space behind the wall. She'd been too scared to explore it then. But now, it might be her only chance.

She hurried to the closet, pushing aside the clothes. The wall looked solid, but she pressed against it, searching for any give. Her fingers found a small indentation, and she pushed.

The wall gave way, revealing a narrow, dusty passage. Her breath caught in her throat. It was still here.

She grabbed her bag, stuffing the letter and the birth certificate inside. She slipped into the passage, pulling the wall closed behind her. The darkness was complete, the air thick with dust and cobwebs. She moved forward, her hands brushing against the rough walls.

The passage sloped downward, winding through the old stone foundation of the mansion. She could hear voices above her, muffled and distant. She kept moving, her heart pounding.

She reached a small door at the end of the passage. It was rusted, the hinges groaning in protest, but it opened. She stepped out into the cold night air, the garden stretching before her. She was outside. She was free.

But the garden was patrolled. She could see the guards moving in the distance, their flashlights sweeping across the grounds. She pressed herself against the wall, waiting for an opening.

A car horn blared in the distance. The guards turned toward the noise. Vivian didn't wait. She ran.

She sprinted across the garden, her feet silent on the grass. She reached the wall and climbed, her arms burning with the effort. She pulled herself over the top and dropped to the ground on the other side.

She didn't stop running. She ran through the trees, through the darkness, toward the road. She didn't know where she was going. She didn't know who she could trust. But she knew she couldn't stay.

The road stretched out before her, empty and dark. She walked for hours, her feet aching, her lungs burning. The sun began to rise, painting the sky in shades of pink and gold. She was free. She was finally free.

---

She made her way to the nearest town, her feet blistered and sore. She found a payphone and dialed the only number she could remember. Chloe's number, from years ago.

The phone rang. And rang. And rang.

Then a voice: "Hello? Who is this?"

"Chloe, it's me. Vivian."

A pause. Then: "Vivian? Oh my god, is that really you? I thought you were—I thought he—"

"I need help," Vivian said, her voice breaking. "I need somewhere to stay. Just for a little while. Please."

Chloe was quiet for a moment. Then she said, "Where are you? I'll come get you."

Vivian gave her the address and waited. She didn't know if she could trust anyone. She didn't know if Damian would find her. But she knew she couldn't do this alone.

The payphone rang. Vivian picked it up, expecting Chloe.

Instead, a voice she recognized. A voice that made her blood run cold.

"Hello, Vivian."

Damian.

Marcus was summoned to Damian's study on the fourth morning.Vivian did not know about it until later. She was in the kitchen when she heard two servants whispering near the pantry. "The master called for Hale this morning." "He looked furious."Vivian kept her head down and continued washing dishes. But her hands had gone cold. Damian had summoned Marcus. Damian was angry. And she had no way of knowing what had happened behind that closed door. She spent the rest of the morning moving through her tasks mechanically. By midday, she had still not seen him.---Marcus did not appear in the garden that afternoon.Vivian waited by the hedge, pretending to gather herbs, but he never came. She waited until the sun began to set, until the air grew cold, until she could no longer justify staying outside. Then she returned to the servant's quarters with a knot in her stomach. She excused herself early from the evening meal and retreated to her room. She sat on the cot with her back against the

Vivian returned to the mansion before dawn. She had spent the night in the city, wandering through streets she did not know, trying to decide whether to run or return. In the end, she had chosen to come back. Not because she wanted to. But because leaving meant abandoning Marcus, and she could not do that. The service tunnel was still unlocked. She slipped through it and made her way back to the servant's quarters, her heart pounding with every step. No one saw her. No one stopped her. She reached her room and locked the door behind her.But as she sat on the cot, she thought about the footsteps she had heard in the tunnel. Someone had followed her. Someone had seen her leave. And she did not know who.---The morning passed in a blur.Vivian moved through her tasks mechanically, her mind elsewhere. She carried trays. She folded linens. She avoided eye contact with everyone she passed. But she felt watched. She felt the weight of unseen eyes on her back.By midday, she understood why.

  • THE FAKE HEIRESS and Her OBSESSIVE BROTHER   Chapter 50: The Warning

Two days passed without a word from Marcus.Vivian counted the hours. She counted them while she scrubbed the kitchen floors, while she folded linens in the laundry room, while she carried trays to rooms she was not supposed to enter. She counted them until the counting itself became a kind of prayer. On the first day, she told herself he was simply being careful. Marcus had contacts to meet, evidence to hand over, people to warn. These things took time. On the second day, she began to worry.By the evening of the second day, she was standing at her window, staring out at the darkened grounds, searching for any sign of movement. There was none. The garden was empty. The gates were closed. The house was silent.Marcus had promised two days. The two days were almost gone.---That night, Vivian did not sleep. She sat on the cot with her back against the wall, the key to the service tunnel clutched in her hand. She had not let it go since Marcus had given it to her. It was the only thing

The days that followed passed like a slow poison.Vivian noticed the changes immediately, though they were so small that anyone else might have missed them. The doors to the west wing were locked now every single one. The corridors she had learned to move through so easily were sealed off, one by one, like a house slowly closing its eyes. She tested each lock in the quiet hours before dawn and found them all the same. New locks. Heavy and cold.---The garden was next.Five days after Damian's confession, Vivian was sent outside to gather herbs and found the gate at the eastern wall padlocked. She stood there for a long moment, staring at the metal chain, and felt something cold settle in her stomach. She had used that gate before. She had stood at that gate with Marcus and whispered about evidence and plans and the night they would break into Richard's study. That gate had been her way out. Her way to breathe. Now it is closed.---The servants noticed nothing. They still gossiped in

  • THE FAKE HEIRESS and Her OBSESSIVE BROTHER   Chapter 48: The Confession

Vivian did not sleep that night. She could not stop thinking about the photograph Damian had shown her. The garden. The roses. The places she used to hide. Whatever Damian knew about her past, he had known it long before she realized he was watching. But she had not broken. She had not given him what he wanted. And that was something. The next morning, Vivian rose before dawn. She dressed quickly and made her way to the kitchen, her mind still churning. She needed to act normal. She needed to be invisible. But as she stepped into the corridor, she saw him. Damian stood at the end of the hallway, waiting."Sarah." His voice was calm. "Come with me."Vivian's heart pounded. She wanted to refuse. She wanted to run. But she couldn't. She had to play her part. She followed him.---He led her through a series of corridors she had never seen before, past rooms that had been sealed for years. Finally, he stopped in front of a door. "This was Emilia's room," he said.Vivian's blood ran cold.

  • THE FAKE HEIRESS and Her OBSESSIVE BROTHER   Chapter 47: The Memory

The next morning, Vivian woke before dawn. She had barely slept. The documents were hidden beneath her mattress. The photograph was tucked inside her uniform. She had spent the night staring at the ceiling, thinking about what she had found in Richard's study. But as she stepped into the corridor, she heard a voice."Sarah."She froze. Damian stood at the end of the hallway. He was dressed in his usual dark suit, his expression unreadable. He walked toward her slowly, his footsteps echoing against the stone floor."I was hoping I would find you."Vivian forced herself to remain calm. "Is something wrong, sir?""No." Damian stopped a few feet away. "I just wanted to talk."---He studied her for a long moment. Then he said, "I've been thinking about our conversation at dinner."Vivian said nothing."You reminded me of someone. Someone I used to know." Damian paused. "Someone I lost.""I'm sorry to hear that, sir.""Are you?" Damian tilted his head. "Because I think you might know who I
