I turned away from the young man and headed back to my palace. On the way, a guard rushed up to meet me, bowed and said, "The council has convened, sire."

"And?"

"They await your presence."

"How long have they been waiting?" I asked.

He thought about that for a moment. "Not too long, sire."

"Then let them wait. I'll see my Luna first."

He bowed and without another word, left my presence. I had an inkling about what they wanted to talk about. I was in no mood to explain to them why the hell I had arranged something called the Alpha Trials without letting them know about it beforehand.

Through the years, it had gotten difficult to explain myself to members of my council. According to law, they had to be some years older than I was. All of them. Including the women.

Where I acted explosively on matters, they executed tardiness. Just because they were old, everything had to work in due process. But I always told them that nothing worked that way anymore. Well, it was hard for them to understand that part of language.

So I headed up the stairs and went straight to Freya's quarters. Her's looked much better then mine but I dismissed it. I didn't have the time to fuss or worry about how the decor of the palace looked. As far as the house wasn't going to come down on me soon, that was all that mattered.

Flowers scented in this part of the palace. There were paintings of picturesque gardens and elegant women that should look naked, if not for the effect of brush exposure.

Chandeliers hung every ten paces and lanterns were on at this time of the day. It brought a smile to my face. I stopped at the door, put an ear to it and listened.

I heard water falling. In rivulets.

The image of her in the bathroom, all naked, intruded into my thoughts and I didn't bother to knock anymore.

I grabbed the knob, turned it, and pushed the door open. The smell of soap and roses hit me. I shut the door, removed my clothes, and joined her in the bathroom.

"What does it look like?" I asked rhetorically.

She opened her mouth in surprise. "I thought you had important matters to attend to."

I shrugged. "Maybe it is because I need them to fill those seats in my hall. Maybe I need them to fill those roles."

"Then maybe you don't need them at all," Freya said, and I was surprised.

"Why would you say that, Freya? Every Alpha King needs his council to rule."

"Because it's tradition?"

"No, because we need the advice. You could sit on the head chair and listen to them try to fix a problem that you have no idea of. Their ideas will tell you the best approach to take."

She gave me a bitter smile. "Then why are you complaining, my love?"

"Yeah, right."

Freya laughed. "If they are doing their jobs the way you want them to, then let them stay. But if it oppresses you or makes you uncomfortable in anyway, then fire them all."

"I'm uncomfortable right now. There's only one thing that can make me otherwise."

"What do you want me to do about that, your majesty?"

"If I'm not going to get deposed for that, we may move on to other matters. I had a thing or two to attend to," I said, smiling when I remembered myself in the bathroom with Freya, and what I'd do to her when I returned.

"Very well, your majesty. First on our table, you know we value your safety, my lord. So we have been keeping an eye out."

"I see."

"And there have been sightings," Julia said.

I turned to her. "What sightings?"

"Of the man who tried to kill you a decade ago."
