"What the hell are you talking about? This is a joke, right?" Bethar looked at Selene like she had grown horns on her head.

Selene turned around slowly, facing Bethar, who had a surprised expression on his face.

"I know this might come to you as a surprise but I'm telling the truth. Look, I don't even know how it happened but it's the truth," she tried to sound convincing.

He flicked his wrist, waving his wrinkled hand in the air. "That's complete nonsense. How can you say you're not Ravena?" His gaze narrowed, staring at her like she had lost her mind. "Did you hit your head or something?"

"Urggh," Selene groaned. "You're not listening to a word of what I've just said.

At that moment, she realized the futility of explaining further. And she wondered if she did the right thing by telling him.

She should have pretended to be Ravena rather than running her mouth.

Bethar stroked his chin as his eyes ran through her tall frame which exuded raw strength and authority. How can she say she

The air in the tavern was heavy with the smell of sweat and stale ale that night. Amidst the noise, he sat in a corner. With the loud laughter and the chatter of some men, the tavern was a wild place.Daemon ignored them. His eyes were fixed on the tavern's double doors, which looked straight down on the elders’ council quarters.Even at this distance, he could see everything from the Elders’ council quarters. He could see those who passed through the council's entrance, every horse that came and went, and every man who entered and exited. The minutes passed slowly. It was starting to get dark as he waited patiently.Horses started to arrive, their hooves tapping the cobbles as their riders got off with a sense of dignity.Their cloaks and tunics, which were of a finer weave than those worn in the tavern, demonstrated their influence and power. They entered the council chambers quickly, their expressions solemn and grim as though they were bearing the weight of the entire world. Da

Lira stood outside the heavy oak door. She inhaled deeply and steadily as she would before beginning a challenging task. She held the heavy tray that felt like a burden. Against her ribs, her heart beat in an uneasy rhythm. She gently opened the door with her elbow to squeeze through. Behind her, the door made a soft final click and closed. Tall windows let in the early morning light. Inside were two figures. Her eyes instantly fell and she bowed her head respectfully. “Greetings Alpha. Your breakfast is ready,” she said, her voice a steady whisper that concealed the internal turmoil she was experiencing. She could feel their gaze on her even though she had her head down. It felt like a physical burden bearing down on her shoulders. One set of eyes was cool and aloof while the other was filled with intense curiosity. She concentrated on maintaining a composed expression as she had done countless times. Her role was that of a mere maid. Tristan paused his conversation with th

The oppressive tension Lira had just escaped was a sharp contrast to the cool hallway air. With a hand on her chest and her back to the wall, she exhaled a long, trembling breath. The doctor's solemn tone and the terrifyingness of a poisoned maid from the conversation she had overheard in the Alpha's office, were still vivid in her memory. The thought sent a chill down Lira's spine because she was almost caught. She used to think the pack house was safe but now it felt like a labyrinth with hidden threats at every turn. She was aware that she would need to exercise much greater caution in the future, watching every step and with her senses alert. Suddenly she felt a shock of sheer terror when someone lightly tapped her shoulder. With a gasp she leaped from the wall and spun around, her heart thumping frantically against her ribs. With a sigh of relief, she let go of the breath that had been stuck in her throat when she noticed Zara standing in front of her, with a gentle smile.

The sudden silence of the hallway was broken by her hard swallow, a dry rasping sound. At the rate her heart was beating, she was afraid it might rip out of her chest. She turned slowly as her heart pounded frantically against her ribs. She hadn't heard anyone approach because she had been so intent on listening at the door. There stood a man with a deep frown on his face and his arms folded across his broad chest. He had a tall, strong frame, and his startlingly amber eyes were staring at her with such intensity. That she wanted to retreat into the wall. The expression on his face was one of suspicion and subdued menace rather than one of simple irritation. He spoke in a low rumble. “What do you think you’re doing standing so close to the door? The question was straightforward yet it weighed heavily on her. Her mind was racing with horror and panic. The cold surface of the tray was a slight comfort as she gripped it tightly.“I… I am…” She mumbled as she spoke, her words trippi

The empty bottle showed Rylan's desperation as he sat, stooped over the polished mahogany table. He had been drinking since the first light of the day, in an attempt to find the peace that he could never find. His private study seemed like a cage. Towering shelves held books with unread spines. Their knowledge is useless in the face of his present suffering. A rough rasp reflected the chaos within him as he ran a hand over the stubble on his chin. Outside, the pack was a whirlwind of noise with the rain drumming relentlessly against the windowpanes. And the wind howled as if it were grieving with him.He served as the sole wretched audience to his misery. He could barely sleep at night because each time he closed his eyes. What he saw were the images of Selene. The knowledge that she was dead. Left him in shambles. He still remembers how he rejected her. Without giving her a listening ear. She had continuously insisted that she was innocent of all accusations, but he allowed his

The air was heavy with an unsaid tension and uneasiness. That clung to the room as he entered through the heavy oak door. He caught a glimpse of Estelle sitting down. Her eyes glinted in the lamplight. She moved forward with a grace that always left him speechless and a soft smile played on her lips. “Bethar,” she said in a calm voice. “ At last you're back. I’ve been waiting for you.” “Waiting for me?” he sneered, the word harsh and cruel. With a shrug, he pushed past her and dropped his bulky cloak to the ground in a heap. “Why were you waiting for me? You made me lose my daughter.”Estelle's smile disappeared, replaced by a look of astonishment. She flinched as though she had been hit. “What are you saying Bethar? Lira, what does it have to do with you returning late?”With his fists clenched, he spun to face her and roared. “ Everything! Estelle, Lira ran away from home. It was you who caused her to leave.” Estelle's chest blazed with a hard, cold rage that had been there fo
