CHAPTER 53: It was me

My panicked gaze shot to Vance. “What do you mean?”

He smirked. “Keep watching.”

I sniffled and, with great difficulty, returned my gaze to the screen of the phone in my hand. My hands trembled like I was holding a fragile ticking timebomb.

There was a painful tightening in my chest as I was faced with the sight of my drunken, heart broken eighteen-year-old self laying down in my bed almost unconscious, unaware of the horror that was already lurking in the dark corner of my supposed safe haven.

Something thick and heavy blocked my lungs and sat in my chest. I wanted to look away. My hands trembled. But I couldn’t. It was like invisible hands were holding my head in place to continue watching misery. It was my worst nightmare, and Vance was making me relive it for reasons which I was sure would only satisfy the twisted selfish agendas he had.

I kept watching…

The man’s hands were all over me, his voice heavy with malicious intent, made my skin crawl. I could al

  • THE GUARDIAN'S BRIDE   CHAPTER 55: You were never worth her time

CHAPTER 55: You were never worth her time The ballroom was an uninteresting blur of champagne glasses, polite laughter, and hollow congratulations. I honestly would rather be in my office than being there. Yet, I stood in the center of it all, the man of the hour, but my mind wasn’t here. I felt it—something was wrong.I sensed it the moment I saw her trying to slip out without being seen. Madelyn had given the excuse of wanting fresh air, but I didn't believe it one bit. I wouldn't be where I am and who I am today if I believed excuses like hers. The way she left… too abrupt, too tense. My instincts screamed, and I’d learned long ago never to ignore them.“Zach.”I turned, to find Julia, draped in a scarlet gown that probably took hours to select. She gave me that smile that she always wore when it was just the two of us. I didn't have the time nor the patience for this. I had to find Madelyn.“Happy birthday.”“Thank you,” I said curtly. She leaned closer, lowering her voice. “I

CHAPTER 54: Break me furtherHe turned around, and the look I saw in his eyes sent chills down my spine. His eyes were dead, hollow.“He was my uncle. My mother's brother,” he added too casually for someone with that vacant look in his eyes. The air was knocked out of me. I staggered backwards like I had been punched in the gut.“W-what?” The man was his uncle and Patricia's brother? What was he doing at the mansion that night? Why was he with Zachary? Did Patricia know that I was the one that killed her brother?I was about to ask Vance that question, but he beat me to it. He was watching the emotions on my face calmly. Too calmly.“Mother doesn't know that her brother is dead. She has no idea that the video exists. So she doesn't know that you killed her brother. Yet.”He continued pacing the rooftop again. This time he was cycling me. Hands in pocket, leisurely unhurried steps. The faint sounds of the music from the party filtered through the still crispy cold air. The party now

  • THE GUARDIAN'S BRIDE   CHAPTER 52: The rooftop

CHAPTER 52: The rooftop The ballroom lights dimmed, the screen lit up with the soft piano music that Kenny and I had spent hours picking out from other classical music options we had. I remembered to breathe again, and my chest loosened with a sharp rush of air. Relief. It was only Zachary’s video slide, pictures of him through the years, pieced together with Lenny’s sentimental touch.I whipped around to Vance, my voice cutting like glass.“You were just messing with me, right? There was nothing. You’ve got nothing on me. Stay the fuck away from me, Vance, or I swear—”“You'll what, Maddie? You used to love having me all over you,” he murmured. My teeth clenched. “Stop talking nonsense, Vance. It was all one huge mistake I made in the past. I'm married now. Stop—”“The night of your eighteenth birthday.”I stopped cold. My blood drained from my face the second he leaned down and whispered, voice silkier than poison.“Yes, Maddy. I know about the night of your eighteenth birthday.

  • THE GUARDIAN'S BRIDE   CHAPTER 51: Vance

CHAPTER 51: VanceThe glass of champagne in my hand trembled just a little as I stood before the small crowd on the slightly elevated stage with Zachary beside me, his arm wrapped snugly around my waist. His fortieth birthday party which I had planned to not be a too loud affair had turned into what I had exactly had in mind. I knew Zachary wouldn't have wanted that, given that he never wanted a party in the first instance. In the end. Lenny and I had pulled together something warm and elegant in record time. It was classy with an intimate vibe. Now, with every eye on me at the moment, I almost forgot how to breathe.I felt a firm squeeze on my waist, and I glanced at Zachary whose gaze was on the small crowd awaiting my speech. He stood beside me but he was the center of the room, tall, stoic, his expression unreadable except for the faintest tilt of his mouth, his version of a smile.I cleared my throat and raised my glass.“Good evening everyone,” I began, my voice catching before

  • THE GUARDIAN'S BRIDE   CHAPTER 50: Two birds One stone

CHAPTER 50: Two birds One stone Water still dripped from my hair and steam still curled from the cracked bathroom door as I snatched the shrilling phone off the counter. The water dripping from my hair landed onto the glowing screen. Private number.I answered anyway.I knew who it was.“Hello?”A pause. Then came the voice that I had grown familiar with— low, smooth, deliberate. I didn’t recognize it, I knew it was a modulated voice, but I liked the way it spoke to me. Like we shared a secret no one else could touch. And we did.My brow arched in surprise. “You’re kidding…”Another pause.A slow grin spread across my face, sharp and hungry, as I held my reflection in the mirror. This was even better than I imagined. Two birds, one stone.“No. No, that’s—better than I imagined. You’re certain?”There was a reply from the other end that made my heart kick, and a dark thrill crawled down my spine. This was going to be so interesting. Things were finally looking up.“I’ll be damned,” I
