CHAPTER 55: HE TELLS HER

CELESTE'S POV

"You're home early," I said. "Or brave. Same warning text twice tonight."

"I don't like doorways for this." Damien set his bag down like it weighed more than a bag should. "Sit with me."

"You already said that. In the text."

"I meant it twice, then."

I sat. He didn't. He stood by the window with the city behind him, and for a man who usually filled a room just by walking into it, he looked smaller than I had ever seen him.

"Vivienne came to my office today

  • THE HEIR'S UNWANTED BRIDE   CHAPTER 67- MARGRET FEELS THE GROUND SHIFT

CELESTE'S POV"The Delacroix seating chart is wrong again." Margaret set her fork down without looking up. "I asked for the Ambrose family near the window. You've put them by the kitchen doors.""I'll fix it.""You always say that.""I'll fix it," I said again, and reached for my water glass. She waited. I could feel her waiting, the old rhythm of it, the pause where I was supposed to apologize twice, maybe three times, where my voice was supposed to climb half an octave and give her something to correct. I drank my water instead.Howard cleared his throat into the silence and asked the housekeeper for more bread. Nobody answered him."Did you hear me," Margaret said."I heard you the first time too."Something crossed her face then, quick, gone before I could name it. Not anger. Anger she wore easily, like a coat she kept by the door. This was something underneath the coat. She picked her fork back up and didn't say anything else for the rest of the meal.*"She noticed," Damien said

  • THE HEIR'S UNWANTED BRIDE   CHAPTER 66- BUILDING THE CASE

CELESTE'S POV"Not the whole account," Damien said. "Just enough to confirm the pattern holds through a fourth transfer. Anything more and the request itself becomes a flag.""A flag for who.""For whoever's watching the systems. Not since Vivienne found that photograph she was never supposed to find."The investigator didn't look up from his laptop. "I can pull four months of statement history through a compliance request. Won't say your name anywhere on it. Says routine audit.""Routine audits don't usually happen at midnight.""They do this month. I made sure of it."The study didn't look like a study anymore. Corkboard against the wall, string running between photographs and printed pages. Dates on the left. Names on the right. Money in the middle, moving in one direction only."Four confirmed transfers," I said. "Two families who don't know their name belongs on this board.""Three," Damien said. "He found a third late last night. I wanted to sit with it before I told you.""You

  • THE HEIR'S UNWANTED BRIDE   CHAPTER 65- STILL WATERS

CELESTE'S POV"Celeste." Damien's voice was low. "We should go."I didn't move."Celeste.""I heard you," I said. The investigator was already at the car, phone to his ear. Damien stayed one step behind me. Close. Not touching."Do you want to sit," he said. "In the car. Just sit.""I want to stand here a little longer.""Okay."He didn't argue. He just stood there in the cold with me, hands in his pockets, waiting.*The drive back was silent. Streets waking up like nothing had happened in them all night. A man walked a dog. A bakery pulled up its shutters. At the penthouse, he opened my door before I could reach for the handle."I can walk," I said."I know."He walked beside me anyway, all the way to the elevator.*Inside, I sat on the edge of the sofa and stared at nothing.Damien didn't ask if I was okay. He went to the kitchen. I heard the kettle, cups. He set one in front of me. I didn't touch it."You don't have to talk," he said. "I'm not going anywhere.""You have a company

  • THE HEIR'S UNWANTED BRIDE   CHAPTER 64- IT WASN'T AN ILLNESS

CELESTE'S POV"Doctor Whitlow," Damien said. "We know you signed both pages."The old man in the doorway did not move. His hand stayed on the frame, like he needed it to stand."It's four in the morning," he said. "You can't be here.""We can," Damien said. "And we are."I stepped past Damien before he could stop me. The investigator stayed one pace behind, folder still under his arm."Two names," I said. "One patient. Your handwriting on both pages. I'm not leaving until you tell me why."The doctor's eyes went to the folder, then to my face, then away, fast, like my face hurt him to look at."You look like her," he said quietly. "God help me, you look exactly like her."My chest went tight. "You knew my mother.""I treated your mother. For eleven months." He stepped back from the door, not quite an invitation, more like his legs had simply given out on the argument. "You'd better come in."The house was small and cold and full of old furniture that didn't match. He sat down hard in

  • THE HEIR'S UNWANTED BRIDE   CHAPTER 63-WHAT THE OWNERSHIP PROVES

CHAPTER 63: WHAT THE OWNERSHIP PROVESCELESTE'S POV"One page," the investigator said. "Out of seven years of files. One page.""How," I said. "The fire took everything. You told us that yourself.""The fire took the originals. It didn't take a copy sitting in a filing cabinet across town."Damien was already on his feet. "What copy.""Insurance," the investigator said. "Before a clinic like that can open its doors, the insurance company makes them copy the intake ledger. Once a year, mailed off, filed somewhere nobody ever looks again. In case of exactly this kind of fire.""So somebody in an insurance office has been sitting on this for twenty-three years," I said, "and never once thought to mention it.""Nobody asked them. Until today."It was still the same night. Or the same very late hour that pretends to be morning if you look at a clock and refuse to believe it. We hadn't slept since the license. Margaret's name, folded under a maiden surname, was still sitting in my chest lik

  • THE HEIR'S UNWANTED BRIDE   CHAPTER 62- THE CLINIC THAT DOESN'T EXIST ANYMORE

CELESTE'S POV"Not closed," the investigator said. "Gone.""Gone how," I said."The building isn't there anymore. Torn down eleven years ago. The company that owned the clinic was dissolved the same year. And every treatment file they kept burned in a fire, two years after your mother died.""A fire," I said slowly."Small one. Storage room only. That's what the report says.""You don't believe that."He looked at Damien first. Then at me. "I don't believe anything until I check it twice. But a fire that burns one room, the exact room holding seven years of patient files, and nothing else in the building catches, no other case like it in that county that whole year — I don't call that bad luck.""Somebody set it," I said."I can't prove that yet.""But you think it.""I think it's a strange kind of luck," the investigator said. "For somebody.""Who investigated the fire," I said."Local department. Small county. They closed the file in nine days.""Nine days.""Nine days," the investi
