ログインAdeline's POV
My heart skipped a couple of beats as he said the words. I didn't want to believe it but his voice had been hard, a warning that this wasn't a game. My eyes went to the press around me. They didn't have their attention on me anymore, something else had grabbed it and I knew it was his live. They were all staring down at something on their phones. I felt his hands on my shoulders again, heavy but telling. “We have to leave this place now. There can be no further clearing of names. He's shattering everything you've been trying to build here” he whispered strongly into my ears. My hands began to shake where they had been still. This couldn't be happening to me, not after everything. I had been through so much, the injuries and the heartbreak. How would Conrad ruin everything in just seconds of a live stream? I was still thinking when I felt myself move. It was Mikhail, he was leading me off the stage slowly and gently. But I didn't want to move, I didn't want to run, not again, I had done that before. I would be a coward to let him do it again. "No,” I said to him, standing my ground. We weren't facing the press anymore, our backs had been turned to them now, the no had left my mouth easier. Mikhail's face twisted into shock, "What do you mean by no? The live started, he's spitting so many lies. These vultures are going to do so much when he's done" He was right, I knew he was but I didn't want to leave. It would be giving another win to Conrad. He would think I was scared and who knew, it might even symbolize to the public that his lies were true. "And if I leave, they're going to find it easier to believe him. They'll think I ran because I couldn't stand the heat of the truth. I can't let him win again” I insisted. He gave me a look, not totally understanding but a little less strong, "And you can't stay here either, at least not right now. We have to know everything he's saying, we have to see it for ourselves. I don't think it should hold now” I knew he was right even if a part of me wanted to fight against it.,was one thing to bolt at the mention of the live but it was another to state our exit. “Then we tell them that. We don't let them form a reason but give them the right one instead” His face morphed into an impressed look. "You're right, a minute. That's all I can give you. Get this done and we leave now” he let my hands go and I took a deep breath before turning around. I stepped back towards the podium, hands shaking with nervousness but mind strengthened. I wouldn't fall at the slightest pressure Conrad placed on me, no - his empire would fall instead. I cleared my throat and began, "I'd like to announce my exit. I've got to deal with the current situation but this press conference will still hold” It was as if my voice had brought them back from wherever they had been. They all looked up from their phones, "When will this be ma'am?” One of them asked. My eyes closed for a moment, there had to be a definitive date but I didn't think there was. Not until so much had been dealt with and so far, nothing had been dealt with. “The day and date will be communicated to you through my team" I paused, “Thank you" The questions began as soon as I turned away, asking me if he was speaking the truth. Asking why I hadn't defended myself and so much more. It broke me that I couldn't say anything, not yet at least but I eventually would. Mikhail took my hands as he led me off the stage, through the back to where the cars had been parked. “Get in" he said quickly, leaving me at the door as he went around the other side. Of course I did as he asked, there wasn't really a choice and nowhere else to go. Once we were inside the car, we sped off and into the night back home. My heart raced in my chest, "Is the live still on?” I asked him. He looked at me as if he wasn't sure what to say- the truth or not. “Yes, it has but my people say it hasn't really taken off. He's waiting for so many people to join it." I had to know, “How many people are there now" He looked hesitant, taking a moment before he answered me, “Two million" I felt my heart stop for a moment, it felt like a knife going through me. Two million was more than enough to destroy my reputation, my father's and even his and somehow he was still waiting for me? I shook my head, “How could he" He was about to speak when the car stopped. I looked to see that we had arrived home. Mikhail didn't wait for me to say anything, he was out of the car in a flash and on my side already. His eyes searched the compound as he helped me off the car, probably being cautious that the media hadn't found its way in. We rushed inside where father was already seated, along with Mikhail's assistant and his - Jake and Donald. Everyone looked struck by the image on the screen. It was Conrad. He had dressed up in a suit which was laughable since it was an I*******m live, his eyes were downcast and I knew that look. It was the same look I had suffered for years whenever he told me one heart wrenching lie or the other. The view bar increased and I was observing as it rose to 2.6 million when I felt a hand on my waist. It was soft, jolting me from thoughts, “Take a seat" Mikhail said, not even waiting for my agreement or disagreement as he led me to the chairs there. Father looked at me for a moment, his face had fallen and I hated that I was the cause of it. They softened at the edges for a moment, “Are you okay?" He asked. I nodded, “I'm worried about you" I said back, I wasn't the only one who was at stake here. And my downfall had been the cause of my stupidity - something that my father shouldn't have to suffer from. He shook his head and whispered back, “Don't worry about me" It was the throat clearing that brought us back to the live showing on the television. The views had increased in less than five minutes, they had hit 3.5 million and they were still increasing. He began to speak, “Just like I said before, I'll be debunking whatever stories she's begun to tell and reveal the truth on this live. I will not let my years of hard work go down the drain due to a pitiful story told by a scorned woman" the expression on his face was purely vile. I couldn't believe it, the man standing in front of me. Even though he had tried to really kill me, it surprised me that he was doing this. He was pretending to the world like I hadn't been the one to champion his success. I had been the funds to his frivolities but now I was simply a “scorned woman" I felt my heart squeeze in pain. The views had increased to four million and he officially began, “A few days ago, something happened. And yes, I will admit my fault” his voice was low and so were his eyes, it was as if he had done some magic and turned the fire off. He looked like a grieving man at that moment. "A betrayal of mine revealed itself, I had cheated on Adeline. And although it happened only once, with one woman, it broke her or at least that was what I thought” The lies had already begun. He hadn't done it once, he hadn't done it as a mistake. It had been a well thought out plan and the fire that had left his eyes began to simmer in my veins. "But then can that betrayal justify the pain she wants to cause to me? Can it justify the planning she carried to ruin my empire?” His question went unanswered but the comments had already begun to pour in. The world was not silent.Conrad POV The soft breeze pf the new day touched my skin from the balcony of my office…I took it all in… everythung. I liked mornings. They were honest. Morning was the only time of day when power really showed off.. where it felt so much better. I entered back into my office slowly, a warm coffee mug in my hands… Thus particular morning felt even much better… Three newspapers. Two digital summaries. One internal memo from media consultants I paid obscene amounts to predict public mood with the confidence of astrologers. Across all of them, one name repeated beautifully. Adeline Royce. Suspect. Detained. Questioned. Possible link. The words did change a little depending on publication style, but the melody was the same. I smiled a little, not too much, though… If I did then, that would imply surprise. And nothing about this outcome surprised me. When a person insists on stepping onto a battlefield they don’t understand, eventually they learn the terrain belongs to s
Adeline POV The plan was now in motion.. In every sense of the word, it was a risk… We could lose the case and be denied bail and it that case, my future will be completely out of my hands… but now more than ever, I had to trust Mikhail… I was being driven by a taxi and soon we arrived at the front of the police station. When the door opened, the cold air hit me like a tidal wave. Two officers were outside waiting for me.. I informed them to expect me. “Ms.Royce.” One said as he guided me inside the station… Inside, everything moved quickly and all at once. Walk. Sit. Confirm. Wait. Answer. I was guided through corridors that all looked the same, until I stopped trying to remember them. They first asked my name, then… My identity confirmed. My details recorded. Fingerprint pressed. Photo taken. All in that order. Then next step…questions. The interrogation room was small. A table. Two chairs. A recorder already on. The officers sat across from me. A young one
MIKHAIL POV Morning arrived sharply… I was already awake when the first call came through. Not because I had slept badly. I hadn’t slept at all. Sleep was a negotiation I didn’t trust myself to enter right now. When Adeline arrived at ky door last night, I knew it wasn’t an option anymore… I had three phones stacked up at ky fesk, all active and ready… There was no second to spare. I needed to help Adeline… I started with the lawyer. “Are you awake?” I asked. A tired exhale on the other end. “I am now.” “I need you ready for emergency filing. It’s a bail motion. Defamation containment and possibly wrongful accusation defense depending on how fast this escalates.” There was a pause, then… “That’s a lot of words for morning.” “It’s not morning,” I said. It was a warning. I ended the call before he could argue. Next: security intel. I needed to know who saw her that night.. if they were CCTV cameras or not. I was about to call when a sharp knock broke through…. Fuck… I
Adeline POV Mikhail did not ask another question until the front door was locked behind him… Then he turned and faced me fully now…. I could see the alarm and the worry in his eyes. I didn’t blame him… I would react the same way if I saw him stroll up to my house nearly midnight shaking and wuth traces of blood around his cloth… “Come.” My legs obeyed before my mind did. He guided me into a sitting room. “Sit down.” I sat on the edge of the sofa because it was all I could manage. He disappeared through an adjoining doorway and returned moments later carrying a folded wool blanket over one arm and a tray in the other hand. It had coffee, water and clean clothes there.. He set the tray down, unfolded the blanket, and draped it around my shoulders himself. The gesture felt so warming…. Then he crouched in front of me, forearms resting on his knees. “Drink.” I lifted the mug with both hands because I was sure if I used only one, I would spill it with all my shaking. The he
Adeline POV I stood in the doorway and forgot how to breathe. For one suspended second my mind refused to understand what my eyes were seeing. No.. no… this couldn’t be right? This was some sort of mistake…right? Devon. The name tore through me so sharply I lurched forward before thought could intervene. “Devon.” My voice came out thin and broken. I dropped to my knees beside her so hard pain shot through them, but I barely felt it. Her face was so cold and pale… her body was soaked in her own blood. “No. No, no…” I grabbed her arms, they were lifeless and cold. “Devon, wake up.” I shook her again.. harder this time, then again… “Wake up.” Nothing. “Devon!” She was.. she…. I pulled back so violently I nearly fell backward. “No…” Just then, I heard loud footsteps charging right into this room… “Ms. Royce!” Daren’s voice. He entered the room quickly… taking one sweeping glance took in the scene: the body, the blood, me kneeling beside it with my now bloodied hands…
Adeline’s POV I stood in the kitchen with the dead phone still pressed to my ear long after the line had gone silent. The kettle hissed softly behind me… but I didn’t hear it anymore… not really. My mind was still on the call. I lowered the phone and looked at the screen. Unknown number. Call ended. That was all. There was no record of who had spoken, no added explanation. I couldn’t even recognize the voice there…just that broken tone. Not make it... dead... watch... back... go... now. I replayed it in my head and hated how uncertain every word became the moment I tried to pin it down. Was it Devon? It had sounded like that.. a femal voice, probably somewhere that didn’t allow calls. It could have been her? Or maybe Jovian..? Or somebody else entirely like a wrong number… Coincidences lile that never happened around my life..not anymore. Maybe it could have been some stupid prank by someone who had found my number and thought my life was public entertainment now. But
Adeline's POVDinner had gone as well as it could that night. My father had been a little quiet but as usual, Natasha had been there to make sure that he wasn't so for long. She had a way of bringing out the energy in him.We had finished eating just then and I wanted to go to bed. Mikhail had know
Adeline POVWhen she left, I felt a wave of loneliness hit me. I had no idea why. It was as if now she had gone, all that was left was my fight again. I heard him come in before I heard his voice, “Why don't we go talk to Jackson?" He said.I looked up from where I had been staring into a portrait
Adeline's POVThere wasn't much I could see by the time tears had filled my eyes. It felt like watching the world around me topple to the ground. Despite how many times I had watched those videos, the content remained the same.Another set of perfectly placed and curated lies that had been created
Mikhail's POVMy eyes were on the laptop, scanning the chart when a knock came on the door. I didn't even get the chance to invite them in before the door opened to reveal Lily. She had a panicked expression on her face, an ipad in her hands.Immediately I knew something was wrong. “What happened?"
