INICIAR SESIÓNChapter 6: The Ghost in the Machine
The big leather chair at the head of the Sterling boardroom did not feel like a seat to Avery. It felt like a chair that could hurt her. Avery sat still, her eyes fixed on the caller ID on the monitor. Alistair Sterling. The name of her father was on the screen in white letters. Silas stood next to her his hand on her shoulder. His fingers got tighter as he thought about what was happening. "It's a trick " Silas said quietly. "Julian must have set up a number to scare you before they took him away." Avery reached out. Pressed the 'Accept' button. The speakers in the room made a noise like someone breathing. "Avery?" The voice was weak and rough like it had not been used in a time.. Avery knew the voice. It was the voice that used to read her bedtime stories about stars. "Dad?" Avery said, her voice shaking. "The vault and the biometric bypass worked because you are my daughter, " the voice said, getting stronger. ". Silas is right about one thing. You are in a room with people who might hurt you. Julian was a small part of the problem. The person who really caused the Sterling company to fall is still in that room." Avery looked at the people in the room, the quiet men in gray suits who did not care about Julian's arrest. Silas stepped away from her looking at the door. "Alistair if this is you tell me where you are " Silas said. "I will send Marcus to get you." "I am where I have always been, Silas. Waiting for the right person to stand up " Alistair said. "Avery checked the bottom of the ledger, the one. There is a computer chip in the leather cover. It has the codes to control the technology that Silas is using for Thorne Industries. It belongs to us." The line went dead. Avery did not wait. She took the ledger and felt the spine. There was a hard square hidden under the cover. She looked at Silas, her heart beating fast. "He is alive. He has been watching us this time." "If he has the codes he can shut down my company with one command " Silas said, his face white. "Thorne Industries would not just belong to you Avery. It would be dead." Before she could say anything the lights in the room went out. The big windows that usually showed a view of Manhattan were blocked by metal shutters. They were in darkness. "Silas?" Avery reached out in the dark, her hands finding his suit. "I did not do this " Silas whispered, his voice close to her ear. "The building's computer system just stopped working." A red light started to glow from the center of the table. It was a countdown timer. 05:00... 04:59... 04:58... "What happens when it hits zero?" Avery asked, her breath catching. "The server room in the basement has a system that uses gas to put out fires, " Silas said, his voice tight with fear. "If the computer thinks there is a problem it will fill the whole building with gas. We won't be able to breathe, Avery." Avery looked at the ledger in her hand at the glowing red numbers. Her father had sent her the keys to her company. It seemed like a trap that could kill them all. "He did not know I would be here, " Silas said, understanding the truth. "He told you to get the codes. He did not tell you to stay." "I am not leaving you " Avery said, her decision made. "You saved Leo. I do not care what my father thinks of your name." She slammed the ledger onto the table. "Silas, the computer chip. If it has the codes can we use it to stop the lockdown?" "Maybe " Silas said, taking her hand. ". We need a computer that is not connected to the main system. My penthouse has a satellite connection. If we can get there before the gas fills the vents we can stop the timer." As they ran for the door Avery's phone buzzed one time. A final text from the number: Choose carefully Avery. Your. Your company. You can't save both. The elevator started to move, filling the air with a smell. Avery looked at Silas in the red light, the man she was supposed to hate and the man she was starting to love. Her fathers ghost was making her choose and as the timer hit 03:00 she realized that being a Sterling might be more dangerous, than being a Thorne.Chapter 27: The High-Stakes SequenceThe way the global publishing market was changing was crazy. Avery was already way ahead of the game. She was sitting in her office at the upstate estate. The morning light was shining on her desk. Her computers were showing her all the information about her books.Avery clicked her mouse. I looked at some reports. Her book, The Architecture of Trust, was still doing great. She was not looking at how much money it was making. She was looking at some messages that were coming from a server in Zurich. This was the server that Julian used to hide his money before he merged his company with theirs. The door to her office. Silas walked in. He was wearing a suit but his shirt was open a little at the top. He looked much at home in the office but his eyes looked sharp like he was ready to make some big deals. He put a tray with a glass of water on her desk.Silas told Avery that Marcus had just found out that Julian's lawyers were trying to stop them from
Chapter 26: The Strategic ShiftThe morning sun was shining brightly across the lawns of the estate. Inside the western-wing studio the only light came from the computers. Avery was sitting with her chin in her hand staring at the market data for the Thorne-Sterling publishing companies. She had a folder next to her laptop. It was a folder with heavy blue paper. The finalized contracts from GoodNovel and NovelSnack. These contracts made sure that her books, written under the name Nora Vale, were safe from any problems with the company.Avery had been writing for fifteen years. She knew that the important thing for a writer was to own the rights to their work. The door. Silas walked in. He was holding a tablet in one hand. Two cups of coffee in the other. He was wearing a shirt but it was not buttoned up and he did not have his vest on. He looked like he was at home. His eyes were sharp like he was in a meeting."The London stock market just opened, " Silas said. He put the coffee down
Chapter 25: The Blueprint of InversionThe mechanical keyboard made a hollow click as Avery finished setting up the main structural constraints for the next phase of her plan. Going from managing conversations at the Thorne-Sterling boardrooms to tracking numbers for her accounts felt like switching from silk to cold steel. It was a move to take control of her life.On her monitor a developer window was open showing her contract portals on some websites. Her project, the Architecture of Trust was doing great with automated analytics pouring into her account. This used to mean survival. Now it meant she was totally independent. There was a knock at the heavy oak door and then it swung open. Leo walked in holding a tablet and wearing a dark sweater that made him look strong and healthy. The kid who was once hidden in a hospital was gone; now he was a man with bright analytical eyes."You are changing things again " Leo said, walking over to her desk and looking at the charts on her scre
Chapter 24: The Iron BlueprintThe sun was just coming up when Avery walked into the studio. She did not look up from her computer. Her coffee was cold. She was so into her work that she did not even notice. She was typing away on her keyboard, her fingers moving fast. She was not working on The Architecture of Trust that morning. Instead she had a project open on her computer. It was called The Iron Vault: Doomsday Architect. For a while now Avery had been thinking about something. She wanted to write about a world that was not all fancy and perfect. She wanted to write about a world that was tough and real.Avery was focused on a guy named Han. He was an architect but he was betrayed by the people he worked with. The world was falling apart. Han was building a safe place to hide. He was making a fortress called the Iron Vault. He was using a system to make it strong with lots of concrete and steel.Avery started typing out a scene:The machine that mixed the concrete was really loud
Chapter 23: The Next ChapterThe evening was getting cooler as the sun went down over the estate in the country and the air was filled with the smell of pine, wet earth and spring rain. This smell was coming in through the French doors of the studio on the west side of the house. Avery sat back in her chair resting her chin on her hand and watched the cursor blink on her computer screen. The clock on her monitor said it was past 7:00 PM. For the first time in fifteen years of writing she did not feel panicked about a deadline. The silver hard drive that Marcus had brought her earlier was on the corner of her desk. All the old files and bad things that were on it were gone, deleted with one click. Now she had a slate to start with.Avery looked at her monitor, where she could see how her new book, The Architecture of Trust was doing. People were really excited about her release and they were talking about it on websites like GoodNovel and NovelSnack. A few hours ago people were arguing
Chapter 22: The Master CopyThe sun was shining into the studio at a sharp angle making long shadows on the oak desk. Avery's fingers were moving quickly on the keyboard, the sound in the quiet room. She had just uploaded Chapter Twenty-One. It was a huge success but she knew she had to keep writing. She could not stop now.She was working on an important part of the story, where the grandfather's secret is revealed. Avery was trying to make it exciting and full of tension like her readers liked. She also wanted to show how complicated the business world can be because she knew it well. Then someone knocked on the door. It was Marcus. He was not wearing his usual uniform. He had on a charcoal suit and was holding a small locked box."Am I disturbing you, Ms. Sterling?" Marcus asked, walking into the room and nodding his head."No Marcus, you are not disturbing me, " Avery said with a smile. She saved her work. Closed her laptop. "What do you have there?""This is the copy of the old f
