Rose's POV

I staggered back a bit. A stranger came running up to me and held me up. "Are you okay?" he asked. I didn't know who he was, but I knew I had seen him before. Of course I did.

In my past life, this was exactly how it happened too. I staggered backwards and was caught by a stranger.

"Ehem..." Richard cleared his throat. "I will take it from here," he told the strange man. As the man reluctantly let me go, I nodded to the man in appreciation.

Richard held me from behind. "You don't look too well, I should take you to your room. The doctor has prescribed some drugs for you, to help you with the depression."

We walked off, heading to my room up the stairs. This was exactly how I got sick last time. I was given medicine for my depression and slowly I was being drugged every day, and in three years I had totally lost everything. By this time back then, I didn't know Richard was cheating with my friend or that he had eyes on my dad's wealth.

I was so blind and foolish. At the very least, with the incident of me falling on the floor while Richard ran to my friend first, I should have suspected something.

We got to my room and he opened the door for me. I was welcomed by the smell of cedarwood and roses. My room was just as it was then. Same bedsheet, same design, everything was the same. I quietly sat on my bed as my eyes scanned through the room. Indeed, I once had a beautiful life. I couldn't believe that in the near future I would be locked and abandoned in a basement. If I really went back in time, I need to change my fate.

Richard hurried to my desk and picked up the medicine bottle. If people saw him now, they would think he was a caring husband. He handed me a glass of water and the medicine.

"My darling... please swallow this medicine. It would help you rest, I will take care of—"

"Everything, you mean," I cut in, my voice rising an octave. I glared at him. I wish I could rip off that lying, darn tongue at that very instant.

"How... do you know I was going to say that?" He let out a dry laugh. "Okay... I want to see you take it." He stood rooted there. For a moment, I forgot the kind of careful enemies I had.

"Can I get my phone?" I asked.

"Oh, it's at the hall downstairs. Let me quickly go get it," he said, bursting through the door and running down the stairs like a perfect little messenger. No wonder I couldn't suspect him, he was always so humble. Humbly scheming against me.

I tossed the medicine quickly under my pillow and lay on my bed, covering myself with my white duvet. He got back to the room, but this time he wasn't alone. His mother came with him. She quietly stood just inches from me, her eyes searching my entire body as if looking for a fault.

"Rich kids... you people are always so soft. If you had grown up eating what my son ate, you wouldn't feel so weak on your dad's burial. What can make you strong is giving me a grandchild. You aren't barren, right? It's almost a year now since you married," she complained, her eyes unable to hide her hatred for me.

That was Richard's mum. It was my father's funeral, but all she could think of was to insult me.

She continued. "I don't blame you, my child," Richard's mother said, her voice dripping with fake pity. She stretched out her wrinkled hand to touch my face and I forced myself not to flinch. I just looked at her. This time, it was necessary that I observed the situation clearly. How they had dealt with me with those back-handed comments I never understood.

"You know...," she spoke softly, her eyes traveling down to the black silk of my dress. "Your mother was never here for you. What happened? She ran off, right? I honestly forgot what happened." She turned over to look at Richard.

"Yeah... no... mama," Richard stuttered, looking a bit nervous. "She didn't run off. She died."

"Oh... I am so sorry. How unfortunate you have always been," she smiled at me, but the smile didn't reach her eyes. She began caressing my hair with her filthy hands, then suddenly pulled back, wiping her palm on her own dress as if she had just touched something rotten.

"Richie," she turned to her son, her lip curling in disgust. "Make sure she washes up properly before she comes back down. Death has a way of clinging to people like her. I don't want that orphan energy rubbing off on anyone. Rich people always seem to have this death curse." She looked at me, her eyes sweeping over the jewelry I was wearing.

Everything she had on, from the perm of her hair to her toes, was all bought by me. The proverb of "people bite the hand that feeds them" was honestly true. Immediately, as she turned her back to leave, Katherine broke in.

"Mummy!" she yelled in excitement, running off to Richard's mother to hug her. For reasons I didn't know then, Katherine was very close to his mother. She did everything right for his mum, and one time in the past, I heard his mum wishing Katherine was her daughter-in-law instead.

They both hugged each other. "I hope you weren't giving my other half a hard time," Katherine said.

"Oh, my dear... you are always so kind to your friend. Everyone should have a friend like you." Katherine giggled, nodding her head slightly lower to Richard's mum.

"Hahaha..." I couldn't hold it in anymore. I chuckled. They all turned to look at me.

"Rose, you aren't going crazy, are you? Why did you laugh?"

I kept silent. I scrambled off my bed immediately, snatched my phone from Richard's hand, and walked past them toward the door. I gripped the doorknob as they all looked at me, frozen.

I halted and turned to them. "I wish Katherine was your daughter-in-law, too," I smiled and stepped out, slamming the door behind me.

This time around, there is no time for me to lay on my bed depressed. In the past, I couldn't even stay for my dad's funeral, but since I was given a second chance, I would oversee this burial myself.

FLASHBACK:Rose's POV "Where am I?"My eyes snapped open slowly, the white ceiling, swirling like milk until the edges finally sharpened. The silence in the room was not peaceful, it was pressurized, suffocating vacuum. I felt a pounding headache, that drummed against my skull in a frantic rhythm. I was weak, I felt incredibly fragile, like a glass doll that could shatter at any touch.I lay perfectly still, my breath shallow listening. I was trying to remember the last thing that happened and how I ended up in an unfamiliar room.Beep... Beep...Beep.The faint sound of a heart monitor nearby confirmed my worse fear. I wasn't in the house. This was definitely a hospital.I tried to move my hand to my head, but a sharp tug stopped me. My wrist was strapped to the bed with a thick leather restraint. Panic erupted in my throat, hot and frantic. I tried to pull away, but my muscles were weak and useless. Then my memories all came running to me. Richard was with a nurse in my room, the ho

FLASHBACK; Rose's POV I felt it. The sting was immediate, blinding and absolute. I had just been hit by my husband again. This was not the first time. Nor the second. I honestly can't count how many times I had been hit in my own father's mansion. You know, it wasn't just the physician pain of Richard's open palm colliding with my cheek. It was the utter humiliation of it. I stumbled backward, my shoulder hitting the door frame of the guest bedroom. I didn't fall, but I felt the world tilt violently on its axis."How dare you question me?" Richard's voice was a low growl, vibrating with an intoxicating mix of rage. He stood over me, his chest heaving, his face flushed not with guilt, but with the indignation of a man who believed he was invisible.I held my cheek, my eyes stinging with hot tears that were a mix of pain and sadness. Moments ago, I had walked into our room looking for my husband. Instead, I found him on top my best friend in our own matrimonial bed. My next move was

Rose's Pov "If Rose doesn't speak to me, I will be leaving this house now."Derek's voice was deceptively quiet, but it commanded immediate silence in the lounge. "You can speak with me, Derek, it hasn't come to that honestly," I blurted out, my eyes darting to Richard. "Please, everyone. Leave us."Eleanor huffed, looking at me with pure venom, but I couldn't defy Derek's presence. Katherine gave me one last glint of jealousy before leaving the lounge with Eleanor. Richard hesitated, looking from me to Derek, his eyes red with anger. "My wife is pregnant. And she is stressed, she needs to rest now, Sir. I will speak to you on her behalf.""I will speak to Derek myself honey," I blurted out, ignoring Richard's frantic look and statement. "My mouth is working just fine." Richard glared at me, without saying a word he stormed out the lounge. As soon as the heavy door slid shut, the heavy, suffocating atmosphere disappeared replaced by a cold, business like tension."Why are you here,

  • THE HEIRESS'S REBIRTH:REBORN AS A THORN IN MY HUSBAND'S PATH   Uninvited Guest

Rose's POV The air in the lounge was toxic. Richard held the cup against my lips with a grip that felt like iron bands. The metallic tang of the tea steamed up into my nose, a scent that triggered an involuntary shudder through my body. The same scent of the basement, I felt a familiar terror crawling into my skin. My heart hammered against my ribs in a frantic rhythm. I raised my hand up slowly to hold the base of the cup. Finally a thought dropped into my mind. I should just faint right now, that would have been a good idea but what if I got injected with the drug instead. As I closed my eyes, forcing a shaky breath, preparing to tilt the cup not into my mouth, but onto my own dress, in a fake spill. CLICK! CLICK! Heavy clicking of boots stumped on the marble floor behind me. "This place doesn't look bad," a voice interrupted, cold, smooth and devastatingly calm. It was a familiar voice. Richard froze instantly, his eyes brushing past me to see who it was. Richard's mum gas

Rose's Pov The air in the lounge was suffocating me, it was heavy with the scent of lilies and the cup smelled like the metallic tang of drug steaming from it. I have dropped my shopping bags on the floor, holding the cup of tea Richard had given me. I knew damn well what was on it. It wasn't just tea. It was drugged. He was trying to make me a vegetable again."I said, Drink," Richard repeated. The word was soft, almost gentle, which made it a thousand times more terrifying. He took a predatory step forward and I drifted back a little. My mind raced, a frantic animal trapped in a burning cage. I needed a way out of this mess. How did Richard find my location? I had underestimated my enemy once again. If I drank this, I would be completely at their mercy, incapable of fighting, incapable of thinking. If I threw a fit now, it would lead to more issues. I had been already tagged insane by everyone.I needed to be smart about this. The cup of tea slipped from my hand, it smashed on the

Richard's POV "Something is definitely off about her."I shut the heavy oak door of Mr Hawthorne study behind me. The muscles on my face ached from fake constant smiling. I raised my hand to rub my aching face. I had no idea why my dear wife had to always put me through constant pressure. Rose had been acting all wrong these days, was it because of the drugs I gave her? It couldn't be the doctor had told me it would always make her weak and dizzy but this was totally the reverse.I poured a glass of my late father in-law vintage scotch, my hand steady."Useless," I hissed, my eyes fixed on the head of security who stood trembling by the door. "You let my darling wife out of this house without a driver? You let her out in a private cab!" I roared."Sir, Madom Rose...insisted she wanted to go alone," the guard stammered.I took two dangerous steps closer to my guard, and waved him out with a heavy slap across his face.
