Chapter 3: The Bloodline Glitch

"It showed he isn't Julian’s either," Elara said.

The elevator hit the lobby floor with a heavy thud. Caspian didn't move. He kept his hand on the door sensor, preventing them from opening. The silence between them was thick, punctuated only by the distant sound of the lobby's fountain.

"Explain," Caspian commanded.

"The birth certificate is real. The marriage to Sienna is real.

But the biological data doesn't match," Elara said, her words coming out in a sharp, frantic rush. "Julian thinks he’s using his son to anchor me. Sienna thinks she’s kidnapping her ticket to a settlement. Neither of them knows they are fighting over a child that belongs to a third party Julian was trying to defraud five years ago."

Caspian let go of the door. "We’ll deal with biology later. Right now, we deal with the threat."

They burst into the lobby. Caspian’s security team was already a moving wall of black suits, clearing a path through the afternoon crowd. The black sedan was idling at the curb, the door held open. Elara dove into the leather interior, her mind racing faster than the engine as they pulled into traffic.

"Call the school," Caspian said, handing her a secure line.

"I already tried. They won't release information over the phone during an emergency lockdown," Elara said. She was scrolling through a GPS tracker she had hidden in Milo’s backpack months ago. "She's not at school. She’s moving.

She’s heading toward the private airfield on the north side."

"She’s fast," Caspian remarked. He tapped a command into his own tablet. "She must have a pilot on standby. If she gets him on a plane, international law becomes a nightmare."

"She won't get him on a plane," Elara said. She opened her laptop and connected to the city’s traffic management grid. It was a system she had helped optimize for the local government two years ago. She still had the administrative credentials.

"What are you doing?"

"I'm giving her a red light," Elara muttered.

She executed a localized override. Three blocks ahead of Sienna’s tracked location, the entire intersection at 5th and Main turned red in every direction. Traffic groaned to a halt.

On her screen, the little blue dot representing Milo’s backpack stopped moving.

"There," Elara pointed. "She's trapped in the gridlock behind a delivery truck."

Caspian looked at his driver. "Go over the curb. Get us there in two minutes."

The sedan lurched, tires screeching as it bypassed a line of idling cars. Elara watched the blue dot. It was stationary, but then it started to flicker.

"She’s getting out of the car," Elara gasped. "She knows she’s stuck. Caspian, she’s taking him on foot toward the subway entrance."

"She’s desperate," Caspian said. He pulled a small radio from his pocket. "Team two, intercept at the subway entrance on 5th. Use non-lethal force. The boy’s safety is the only priority."

The sedan slammed to a halt a block away from the entrance. Elara didn't wait for the guard to open her door. She scrambled out, her heels hitting the pavement hard. She could see the crowd gathered around the intersection, people honking and shouting at the sudden traffic failure.

In the chaos, she spotted a flash of blonde hair and a small, bright blue backpack.

"Milo!" Elara screamed.

Sienna Vane turned. Even in the middle of a frantic escape, she looked impeccable in a cream-colored trench coat. She had one hand gripped tightly around Milo’s wrist. The boy looked terrified, his eyes wide as he struggled to keep up with his mother's long strides.

"Elara, stay back!" Sienna shouted, her voice shrill over the noise of the city. "He’s my son! You’re nothing but a paid servant! You have no legal right to him!"

"Let him go, Sienna!" Elara yelled, closing the distance. "I know about Swiss accounts. I know Julian is broke. You’re holding onto a debt, not a meal ticket!"

Sienna reached the top of the subway stairs. She looked down into the dark opening, then back at the black suits closing in from the other side. She was cornered.

"If I can't have the inheritance, neither can he!" Sienna yelled. She pulled Milo closer to the edge of the concrete stairs.

Caspian stepped up beside Elara. His presence was a physical weight, cold and immovable. "The police are two minutes away, Sienna. Every exit is blocked. If you let the boy go now, I might decide not to prosecute you for kidnapping."

"You’re a Thorne," Sienna spat. "You don't care about this boy. You just want the girl's cooperation."

"I care about what belongs to my wife," Caspian said. He didn't look at Sienna. He looked at Milo. "Milo, do you know who I am?"

The boy shook his head, tears streaming down his face. "I want Mama Elara."

Sienna flinched as if she had been slapped. Her grip on his wrist tightened, and Milo let out a small cry of pain.

"He doesn't even know me!" Sienna screamed. "I gave birth to him, and he calls you mother!"

"Because I was the one who was there!" Elara shouted. "I was there for the nightmares and the first day of school while you were spending Julian's stolen money in St. Moritz! You didn't want a son, Sienna. You wanted a hostage."

Sienna looked down at the boy, her face contorting with a mix of rage and realization. She looked at the crowds, the cameras, and the wall of men surrounding her. She realized the game was over.

She shoved Milo toward Elara with a violent force.

"Fine! Take the little brat! He's just like his father, useless!"

Milo stumbled, his small shoes tripping on the edge of the top step. Elara lunged forward, catching him by the straps of his backpack just as he began to fall. She pulled him into her arms, collapsing onto the pavement as she held him against her chest.

"I've got you," Elara sobbed into his hair. "I've got you, Milo."

Caspian moved past them like a blur. He didn't go for Sienna. He grabbed the railing and blocked the path of two men who had appeared from the subway stairs,Sienna's hired muscle. With a series of brutal, efficient strikes, he sent both men reeling back down into the darkness.

Sienna tried to run into the street, but she was met by four police officers with their weapons drawn. They forced her to the ground, the cream trench coat staining in the gutter.

Elara didn't watch the arrest. She just held Milo. She felt his small heart racing against her own.

"Is he okay?" Caspian asked, kneeling beside her. He reached out, his hand hovering over Milo's shoulder before he gently patted it. It was the first time Elara had seen a flicker of real humanity in his eyes.

"He's shaking," Elara said, her own voice trembling. "But he's okay."

"We need to go," Caspian said, standing up and scanning the area. "The press will be here in seconds. My jet is ready."

"We're not going to the airfield," Elara said. She stood up, lifting Milo into her arms. The boy clung to her neck, refusing to let go.

"We have to get out of the city, Elara. Julian’s lawyers will be filing an injunction within the hour."

"Let them," Elara said. She looked at the police officers who were currently loading Sienna into the back of a cruiser.

"Julian isn't the problem anymore. He’s a dead man walking. But there’s someone else."

"Who?"

"The person who actually owns Milo’s DNA," Elara said. She pulled a folded piece of paper from her pocket, the one she had taken from the vault earlier. "My grandfather didn't just leave me the Thorne estate. He left me the record of a debt Julian owed to a rival family. A family that thinks their heir died five years ago."

Caspian’s eyes darkened. "You’re talking about the Moretti family."

"Julian didn't just find a child to adopt, Caspian," Elara said.

"He stole one to use as leverage against a war he couldn't win. And now that he’s lost the Thorne money, he’s going to try to sell the boy back to them to save his own skin."

Caspian took a deep breath, looking at the boy in Elara’s arms. "If the Morettis find out their son is alive and in the hands of a Thorne, this isn't a corporate war anymore. It's a blood feud."

"Then we have to get to Julian first," Elara said.

A black SUV pulled up, its doors swinging open. Elara started to move toward it, but Caspian caught her arm.

"Elara, wait," he said. "The contract said I protect you and your assets. It didn't mention a war with the Morettis. If we do this, there is no two-year exit. You’re in this for life."

Elara looked at Milo, then back at the husband she barely knew.

"I was already in it for life the moment I signed that marriage certificate five years ago," she said. "At least this time, I know who I'm fighting."

They climbed into the SUV. As the vehicle sped away from the chaos of the intersection, Caspian’s phone rang. He looked at the screen and cursed under his breath.

"It's Julian," Caspian said.

"Put it on speaker," Elara commanded.

Caspian hit the button. Julian’s voice filled the cabin, but it wasn't the arrogant tone he had used in the boardroom. He sounded terrified.

"Caspian? If you’re with Elara, tell her to listen," Julian panted. There was the sound of breaking glass in the background. "They’re here. They’re in my house. They know, Elara! They know he's alive!"

"Who is there, Julian?" Elara asked, her voice like ice.

"The Morettis," Julian screamed. "They don't want the money! They want the boy, and they said if I don't give them his location in ten minutes, they’re going to"

The call cut off with the sound of a heavy blow and a muffled cry.

Elara looked at the GPS on the dashboard. They were ten minutes away from the house.

"Caspian," she said.

"I know," he replied, looking at his driver. "Drive faster. And get the guns out of the trunk."

Milo pulled back from Elara's neck, his small face pale. "Mama? Why is Daddy screaming?"

Elara smoothed his hair back, her eyes meeting Caspian's in the rearview mirror.

"Don't worry, Milo," Elara whispered. "We're just going to settle a very old debt."

As the SUV screeched around a corner, Elara’s laptop chimed. A new message had bypassed her security. It was a single image: a live feed from the nursery in her old house.

A man was sitting in Milo's small rocking chair, holding a single red rose. He looked up at the camera and smiled.

It wasn't Julian. And it wasn't a Thorne.

"Caspian," Elara whispered, pointing at the screen. "That’s not a Moretti."

Caspian leaned in, his jaw tightening as he recognized the face.

"That's my brother," Caspian said. "The one who died three years ago.”

  • THE HEIRESS'S VENGEANCE    THE MAN BEHIND THE VOTE

CHAPTER 24: THE MAN BEHIND THE VOTEElara walked back and forth in Whitfield's office, her heels hitting the floor in short, angry steps. Julian Vane's name was still ringing in her ears like something she couldn't shut off. Her hands wanted to shake. Instead, she kept them moving, walking, folding her arms, doing anything to avoid standing still with the feeling."He's in a hospital bed awaiting trial. How does a man like that get a vote in anything?""Because he still owns shares," Whitfield said, sliding a document across the desk. "A small stake. Tied to an old agreement between Vane Tech and a Thorne subsidiary. Signed years before you two married.""So this is real." Elara quickly picked up the paper and scanned it, feeling something inside her chest sink while her eyes continued moving over the words. "He actually has voting rights.""Limited. Enough to request a shareholder review. Not enough to block your appointment."Caspian stood by the window, his arms crossed, his face c

  • THE HEIRESS'S VENGEANCE    THE BOARDROOM

CHAPTER 23: THE BOARDROOMThe Thorne boardroom was colder than Elara expected. It was made of glass and steel, with a table stretching under bright white lights like it was built to intimidate people, not welcome them. She felt the cold in her spine before she had even crossed the doorway. She walked in with her shoulders back, a slim folder under one arm, Caspian a half step behind her. Close enough to matter. Far enough that the room could see she had walked in on her own. Her heartbeat was already loud in her ears, a fast, unsteady beat she hoped nobody else could hear.Twelve directors waited. Arthur sat near the head of the table, his expression unreadable. Beside him was a woman Elara didn't know. Her pen was already tapping against her legal pad like she was counting down until it was her turn to speak. Elara made herself hold the woman's gaze for a moment longer than was comfortable, the way she'd learned to do with Julian's old partners, never looking away first."Ms. Vance,"

  • THE HEIRESS'S VENGEANCE    THE CHALLENGE

CHAPTER 22: THE CHALLENGEThe phone rang before the sun came over the garden wall.Elara grabbed it while she was still half tangled in the blanket. Her heart was already beating faster before her sleepy mind understood why. Ms. Whitfield's name was on the screen. That was never good news at this hour."It's early," she said, her throat still thick with sleep."I wouldn't call if it wasn't necessary. Come to the office. Now. Bring Caspian. Bianca too, if she can. And Marcus, if he can sit through bad news.""What bad news?""Not on the phone."The line went dead, and Elara sat there for a second, the phone still pressed to her ear. She felt the old, familiar drop in her stomach. She knew that feeling. She had spent years living with it, waiting for Julian to walk through a door and tell her what she had done wrong this time. She thought she had left it behind.Caspian was already at the car when she came down. His jaw was tight in the way that meant he had guessed something was wrong

  • THE HEIRESS'S VENGEANCE    WHAT THE LAWYERS SAID

CHAPTER 21: WHAT THE LAWYERS SAIDElara sat across from her lawyer's desk two days later, a thick folder of documents spread out between them, the morning light filtering softly through the office windows."So," said Ms. Whitfield, the sharp, no-nonsense woman Marcus had personally recommended to handle the family's legal affairs, "let's talk about what Julian is actually proposing.""He wants full custody signed over to me quietly," Elara said. "No public fight. In exchange, he wants me to ask the prosecution to keep certain details about the adoption fraud out of the official trial record."Ms. Whitfield studied the request written out in front of her, tapping her pen thoughtfully against the desk. "The custody part is simple enough. He has no real legal ground to contest it anyway, given everything that's already come out about the falsified documents. Frankly, you could get full custody without giving him anything in return.""I know," Elara said. "That's what makes this complicat

  • THE HEIRESS'S VENGEANCE    THE HOSPITAL WING

CHAPTER 20: THE HOSPITAL WINGMorning came too fast.Elara stood in front of the mirror in Bianca's guest room, smoothing down the front of a simple gray dress, her hands steadier than she expected them to be. She had rehearsed this moment a hundred times in her head overnight, imagining what Julian might say, what expression he might wear, whether he would still look at her the way he used to when he wanted something from her."You don't have to do this today," Bianca said from the doorway, watching her carefully. "You could give it another week. Let him sit with his lawyers a little longer before you give him the satisfaction of your attention.""I've given him five years of my attention," Elara said. "A week won't change anything except how long I let this hang over me."Bianca didn't argue further. She simply nodded and stepped aside to let Elara pass.Milo was still asleep when they left, Marta settled comfortably in the kitchen with a cup of tea and a promise to keep him busy wi

  • THE HEIRESS'S VENGEANCE    THE CALL

CHAPTER 19: THE CALLThe next morning came slowly, sunlight spilling gently through the curtains of the safehouse. Elara woke to the smell of coffee and the quiet sound of voices downstairs. She found Bianca and Lorenzo in the kitchen, along with Marcus, looking much stronger than he had the night before, color slowly returning to his face."Grandfather," Elara said, surprised to see him up and moving. "You should still be resting.""I've rested enough for one lifetime," Marcus said, though his voice was still weak. "I want to help sort out what happens next.""There's a lot to sort out," Bianca said, sliding a cup of coffee across the table toward Elara. "The estate. The board. Silas is in the hospital, under guard. Someone needs to decide what happens to him now.""One thing at a time," Elara said, sitting down heavily at the table. "First, I want to make sure Milo has a normal breakfast, in a normal kitchen, without anyone chasing us."As if on cue, small footsteps sounded on the s
