I was still fuming, unable to focus on anything but that smug son of a bitch and his demand that I work for him and him alone. I gave up on unpacking, grabbed my laptop, and got to work instead. "Arrogant prick, demanding I only work for him," I muttered, checking my email. "Isn't he perfect?" my wolf purred. She'd been in a lovesick haze ever since she laid eyes on Alpha Blake. "Did you forget we already got screwed over by an alpha? He was our mate, and look how that turned out. I'm not handing myself over to another one especially one who tried to command us. We have more important things to worry about. Like Channing." "Fine. But when he leaves for college, I'm owed a good fuck," she huffed, retreating. I understood her frustration. I'd given myself to someone once, and he'd betrayed me for it. I couldn't fall for that twice. I thought I'd loved my mate, and I don't think I'll ever be able to hand that much control to anyone again. I was deep into Mr. Dillinger's finances when Channing wandered into the kitchen. I was working at the island, still refusing to set anything else up. The thought of settling into two months here was exhausting on its own. "All done?" he asked, opening the fridge. "Haven't even started. I need to finish this before Mr. Blake loses his mind," I said with a sigh. "You really don't like alphas, huh?" he asked, pulling out sandwich supplies. Whoever had stocked this kitchen had done us a favor no grocery run needed yet. "I don't like being told what I can and can't do with my own time. He demanded I submit," I told him, crossing my arms. "Well, this should be fun to watch," he chuckled. "Sorry, Channing. I know this isn't your fight to carry." My voice was sympathetic my son, after all, was an alpha in his own blood, even without a pack of his own yet. "Don't be. A please and thank you would've gone a long way. He didn't have to talk to you like that," he said, sliding a plate my way before grabbing two cold sodas from the fridge. "You're the best. And if he wants the best, he'd better start giving the respect he's demanding," I said, warmed by his loyalty. "You're a wolf, but you're a Luna, Mom. His equal, whether he realizes it yet or not." "Let's keep that between us." "Not a soul," he said, rounding the counter to set down my soda and kiss my cheek. "I'm all unpacked. Going to eat and get ready for bed." "Thank you for the sandwich. Goodnight, sweetie. Love you," I called after him. "Love you too. Don't stay up too late," he called back, and I laughed. Sometimes I think he forgets who the parent is. It didn't take long to trace the money and the accounts behind it. I forwarded everything to Miller and Dillinger. Honestly, anyone at the firm could have handled this one I think he simply wanted discretion. Dillinger is rich and powerful, and if word got out that his wife was cheating and stealing from him, it would hurt his reputation. He knows I'd never breathe a word about a client, no matter who was asking. Once the email was sent, I cleaned up the kitchen and headed upstairs. The house really was beautiful three bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. I took the one that looked out over the lake, with a window seat perfect for watching the view. I groaned at the sight of all my unpacked suitcases. All I wanted was to sit at that window and pretend I wasn't standing in the middle of someone else's pack. I checked on Channing sound asleep then went back to my room and started unpacking. As much as I hated the idea, I needed this place to feel like home, at least for the summer. The moon hung nearly full above the lake. Once everything was put away, I changed into an oversized shirt and shorts, climbed into bed, and stared at the ceiling. "Only two months, and then we're back to our normal lives," I said into the dark, empty room. "Do you actually believe that?" Lily asked. "Is there something you know that I don't?" She only whimpered in response. "We've been through enough, Lily. I've worked too hard for our normal life to let it slip without a fight. Channing has enough going on with his senior year. We have to get back for his sake, not just ours. We just need to make sure no one finds out you're a Luna wolf. The past doesn't get to become the present. Not again. Not while I have any say in it.”Alpha Blake To say this Monday was busy would have been an understatement. It's been a long time since I've had so many back-to-back meetings. And to top it all off, the board was demanding a meeting with Ryley who had barely even started. Even though I knew she probably hadn't found anything yet. I didn't even know if there was anything to find. I was spending a lot of money to ease my own anxiety. But after learning the manager had been stealing for years right under my nose, I wanted nothing left unturned. I didn't get a chance to sit down behind my desk before Aspen stormed in with Luca right on his heels. "Dad, I'm in love," Aspen announced, dropping into a seat while Luca chuckled behind him. "Oh, and who's the lucky girl?" I smirked, taking my own seat. Luca sat down beside him, looking far too amused already. "She's an older woman, but that's okay. And she already has a kid, so I get to be a dad." Aspen said it with a completely straight face, and I pressed my lips into a
Ryley My stomach grumbled as I made my way into the dining room. It wasn't busy, so I grabbed a sandwich, some fruit, and a bottle of water. I had Channing's voice nagging in my head about eating more, so I grabbed a diet soda too. I sat down at an empty table, opened the container of cut-up fruit and berries, and started scrolling through my emails. I could feel curious eyes on me, and it twisted my stomach. I should have taken everything back to my office to eat at my desk. It didn't take long before I was lost in all the unread messages, and by the time I looked up, I'd already finished eating. I was just wrapping up an email before heading back to my office when the clicking of heels on the tile floor caught my attention. They stopped right in front of my table. I could feel someone's intense glare, but little did they know I was used to being glared at, and no one intimidated me. A foot started tapping impatiently while I took my sweet time finishing my email before finally lif
Ryley The weekend went by quickly. Channing and the alpha's son, Aspen, had been inseparable. He really is a good kid, especially for one being raised by a single dad. I enjoyed having him at our place. They spent Sunday playing video games and hanging around the house. I'm used to Channing having friends, but usually the weekends were for us. I think Aspen was just lonely he'd mentioned his dad was busy with meetings all weekend. Poor kid. Now it's Monday morning, and I'm walking up to the pack house. Beta Luca is standing outside. "Good morning, Miss Halliwell," he greeted me. I was dressed professionally in a high-waisted pencil skirt and a white blouse, my heels clicking against the driveway as I walked up toward him. "Good morning, Beta Luca. How are you feeling?" I asked with a smirk. "Sore, in places I never knew existed," he groaned, and I laughed. "Come on, let me show you to your office. I'll also show you where the dining room is for lunch," he said, leading me into t
Alpha BlakeI was hitting the weights in the gym when Aspen mind-linked me to say my beta was getting his ass kicked on the training field. What the hell was going on? I grabbed my shirt and headed over, greeting pack members along the way. With everything else going on, I'd wanted a few minutes alone to work off some tension."Yeah, 'cause jerking it in the shower for an hour didn't help," Gunner snickered. I ignored him. He'd been feeding me nothing but filthy images since we met Ryley the day before. He started purring like a kitten the second we reached the field and I saw her taking my beta down again and again with technique that was flawless, almost lazy in its precision. Everyone who was supposed to be training had stopped to watch instead. I stepped up beside her son, Channing, as Ryley helped Luca up off the ground. She'd flipped him hard enough to knock the wind clean out of him. He was gasping for breath, drenched in sweat. Ryley didn't even look winded."What's going on
RyleyI don't remember falling asleep. My mind had been racing through too many scenarios all night. I needed to take back some of the control some normalcy for the both of us while we're stuck here. Channing could find a summer job in the city, or start a couple of online classes.I forced myself up. The only way back to any kind of routine was our morning run. We hadn't made it to a movie the night before, but maybe he'd want to go this afternoon. If not, I'd spend the day reading. It had been a long time since I'd had a day to myself.I pulled on shorts, a sports bra, and a tank top, and stepped out of my room just as Channing came out of his, already dressed for the run."Was just coming to get you," he said."Morning, sweetie. Sleep okay?" I asked as we headed downstairs."Really good, actually. I think this could be good for us, Mom." Chipper as ever. He'll always be my boy with the glass half full.I grabbed my phone and the house key and followed him out onto the porch. After
