Julian's POV

The boardroom smelled like money and fear, and Julian had never hated being there more than he did that morning.

“It's a good deal,” said Frasier, the CFO.

He tapped his pen against the table as if the sound would somehow make the numbers easier to accept.

“Their environmental violations are small compared to the profit we'd make.”

“A small problem,” Julian repeated.

“Julian—”

“We are not joining a company that dumped chemical waste into a residential water supply just because paying the fine was cheaper than fixing the problem.”

He closed the folder in front of him harder than he meant to.

“Find me another deal. This meeting is over.”

He left before anyone could argue with him.

If they argued, he would have to explain himself.

And he was tired.

Very tired.

Not the kind of tired that sleep could fix.

He was tired of explaining himself to men who measured everything with numbers.

The car ride home did nothing to make him feel better.

Neither did the elevator.

It was quiet, with gold mirrors on every side, carrying him up floor by floor to his penthouse.

His home was supposed to be the same as always.

Empty, quiet, His Except it wasn't quiet.

He heard it before he saw it.

A small, happy scream of laughter came from the sitting room.

Then he heard a voice doing something he had never heard before.

Zoe.

She was sitting on the rug with her legs crossed.

His six-year-old goddaughter, Sophie, was sitting close to her, and they were both looking at a picture book.

Zoe was reading to her.

But she wasn't just reading.

She was acting out the story.

She made her voice deep and rough when she spoke as the wolf.

Then she made it high and shaky when she spoke as the pig.

Her free hand moved around as she acted out the different parts.

Sophie laughed loudly.

“Do the wolf voice again!” she begged.

Julian stood in the doorway without saying anything.

He watched Zoe.

Her whole face looked different when she thought nobody important was watching her.

She looked relaxed,happy, open.

There was something bright on her face that Julian didn't have a name for.

He had never seen that side of her around him.

Her hair had come loose again.

There was a coffee stain on her sleeve.

At that moment, she looked like someone who had never had to protect herself from anything.

Then Sophie saw him.

“Uncle Julian!”

And just like that, the moment was gone.

Zoe turned her head.

Her back became straight.

The happy, relaxed look on her face disappeared little by little, like a door closing.

In seconds, she had the same careful look she always wore whenever she looked at him.

It was as if she was waiting for him to find something wrong.

“Mr. Blackwood,” she said.

She put the book aside and stood up, brushing invisible dust from her knees.

“I didn't hear you come in.”

“Clearly.”

Julian hated how cold his voice sounded.

He hadn't meant for it to sound that way.

“You're good with her.”

Something changed on Zoe's face.

Surprise.

It was there for only a second before she quickly hid it.

It was almost as if receiving a compliment from him was so strange that she didn't know what to do with it.

“She's easy to be good with,” Zoe said carefully.

“Kids don't pretend to be anything they're not.”

The meaning behind her words was clear.

Unlike some people.

Julian felt those words hit him somewhere deep inside.

“I'll take her to bed,” Zoe said.

She picked Sophie up before Julian could answer.

Before he could even figure out what he wanted to say.

He wanted to say something that could close the distance between them.

But he didn't know what.

“Dinner's ready for eight,” Zoe continued. “I made sure it wasn't too salty.”

There was a dry tone in her voice.

It should have annoyed him.

But it didn't.

Julian watched as she carried his goddaughter down the hallway.

Zoe said something quietly to Sophie, and Sophie started laughing again.

Julian remained alone in his large, quiet sitting room.

For some reason, he had the strange feeling that he had just watched something important walk away from him.

Something he hadn't even known he wanted.

Not until it was already gone.

His phone buzzed in his pocket.

Julian pulled it out.

It was a message from Marcus.

Marcus: Need five minutes tomorrow. Something's come up with building security. I think you should know about it.

Julian frowned as he looked at the screen.

His thumb stayed over the phone for a moment.

Then he typed a reply.

Julian: Everything alright?

A few seconds later, Marcus replied.

Marcus: Probably nothing. Just want to be careful.

Julian should have felt better after reading that.

Instead, he didn't.

He couldn't explain why, but a small feeling of worry moved down his back.

Something didn't feel right.

And three floors below him, inside a locked room with the door pushed shut, Zoe Hart stood with her back against it.

She stared down at the flash drive in her hand.

Her heart was beating fast.

She couldn't stop wondering one thing.

Had she just picked up something that could get someone killed?

Julian's POVJulian stood outside Zoe's door for almost two full minutes before he finally found the courage to knock. He knew how ridiculous that was.He was a grown man.He had faced difficult business deals, angry investors, and situations that could affect his entire company without showing fear.Yet here he was, standing outside his housekeeper's door at nearly one in the morning, nervous about knocking. He took a slow breath.Earlier that evening, he had read the maintenance records three more times. The answer hadn't changed. The elevator had been inspected only two weeks earlier. There had been no problems. No warnings.Nothing that could explain why it had suddenly stopped between floors that afternoon. But that wasn't the only thing bothering him.He kept thinking about the conversation he had had with Zoe that morning. He remembered her voice. He remembered the hurt in her face. Most of all, he remembered what she had said. She had told him she had been trying to survive hi

  • THE HOUSE KEEPER    Chapter 9:A word of Advice

Zoe's POVThe man was waiting for her near the laundry room. That was how Zoe knew, almost immediately, that something was wrong.Staff members didn't usually stay around the laundry room. There was no reason to.The place was nothing special. It was just a room filled with washing machines, bottles of detergent, piles of towels, and the constant low sound of the building's machines working behind the walls. But the man was standing there. He leaned against the doorframe with his arms crossed.A security badge was clipped to his belt.Zoe had never seen that badge before. She slowed down as she approached, a basket of clean towels balanced against her hip."Long day?" the man asked."Something like that."Zoe tried to walk past him.He didn't exactly block her way.But he didn't move either.Something about him made the small hairs on the back of her neck stand up.She knew that feeling. She had felt it many years ago when she was a child in foster care. Sometimes, she could walk into

  • THE HOUSE KEEPER    Chapter 8:The Elevator

Julian's POVHe told himself he wasn't thinking about her.He repeated that to himself all morning. He told himself while taking two phone calls. He told himself during lunch, even though he barely touched his food. He told himself again during his meeting with Arthur about the merger he had decided to stop.Yet, at 4:47 that afternoon, he was still thinking about her.Julian stepped into the private elevator, his laptop bag hanging over one shoulder. His mind was somewhere else entirely as the elevator doors closed behind him.The elevator began moving down.He was between the fortieth and thirty-ninth floors when everything suddenly changed. The elevator stopped. It wasn't a normal stop. There was no gentle slowing down as it reached a floor. Instead, the elevator gave a hard, sudden jerk that threw Julian sideways into the mirrored wall.He quickly grabbed the railing to steady himself. The lights flickered once. Then twice. After that, they went out.A dim amber emergency light ca

  • THE HOUSE KEEPER    Chapter seven: Paranoid

Zoe's POVJulian was already at his desk, dressed and working on his laptop. He had the quiet, serious look of a man who didn't like being disturbed before nine in the morning."Your coffee," Zoe said as she placed it on his desk. Then, before she could change her mind, she added, "I need to tell you something."He didn't look up."If this is about the towels—""It's not about the towels."Her voice came out sharper than she intended.Julian finally looked up. One eyebrow rose slightly at her tone."I found something," Zoe said. "A flash drive. Marcus dropped it near the trash on the security floor."Something changed in Julian's face.It wasn't concern. Not yet.He simply looked at her with calm attention, the same way he looked at reports from the board."And?""And I opened it."She forced herself to continue, even though his expression became colder."There were messages. Between Marcus and someone he called 'R.' They were talking about..." She paused, trying to find the right wor

For some strange reason, her mind suddenly became very clear. This is how it ends.Hiding under a desk at six in the morning because I couldn't mind my own business."That's not how I left that," he said again. This time, his voice was quieter, almost as if he were talking to himself.A phone buzzed somewhere above her.Marcus's hand moved away from the folder."Yeah," he said, and his voice immediately became smooth and professional. "No, I'm in the office now. Give me two minutes. I'll check the access logs myself."Zoe heard his footsteps. They slowly moved away. Then the door clicked shut behind him.His voice became quieter as he walked down the hallway.Still, Zoe didn't move. She didn't trust her legs.
