LOGINZoe's POV
Zoe waited until Sophie's parents came to pick her up at nine.
Once they left, the penthouse became quiet again.
Only then did Zoe finally allow herself to breathe properly.
Her room was small.
Honestly, it was even smaller than some of the guest bathrooms.
But it was hers.
The door locked.
And right now, that lock felt like the only thing keeping her safe from whatever was going on.
She sat on her bed with her legs crossed.
Her old laptop rested on her knees.
The flash drive was plugged into it.
On the screen, the cursor blinked over a folder called B_Files.
“Okay,” she whispered to the empty room.
“Okay. It's probably nothing.”
She took a deep breath.
“Just some boring security files. Camera schedules. Access records. You're just being paranoid.”
She clicked the folder anyway.
The first file was a spreadsheet.
It was full of information and words she didn't fully understand.
There were elevator override codes.
Emergency lockdown steps.
Penthouse exit points.
Zoe's stomach tightened as she kept scrolling.
This wasn't normal security work.
It looked like a map.
A very clear and detailed map showing exactly how someone could get into Julian Blackwood's home.
Or worse, how someone could trap him inside.
Zoe's hands became cold.
She opened the second file.
What she saw made her even more nervous.
It was a list of messages between Marcus Webb and someone saved only as R.R.
The messages were about Julian.
R.R.: Board vote moves up if he's out of the picture before Q3. You said you had access.
Marcus: I have access. The timing has to be right. It can't look rushed.
R.R.: He trusts you. That's your advantage. Don't waste it.
Zoe stared at the screen, She read the messages once, Then again, Then a third time.
She still couldn't believe what she was seeing.
Her heart was beating hard in her chest.
Then she heard a knock.
She almost didn't notice it.
Another knock came.
This one was louder.
“Zoe?”
It was Elena.
“Are you in there? You didn't come down for the shift change…”
Zoe quickly shut the laptop.
She closed it so hard that the hinge cracked.
She grabbed the flash drive and pushed it under her mattress.
Then she opened the door.
She forced a smile onto her face.
“Sorry. I lost track of time.”
Elena looked at her carefully.
Her eyes moved over Zoe's face.
“You look like you saw a ghost.”
“Long day.”
Zoe forced out a small laugh.
It sounded weak.
“Blackwood and his towels. You know how it is.”
Elena didn't look convinced.
But she didn't ask any more questions.
Instead, she started talking about a problem with a delivery as they walked down the hall.
Zoe nodded when she was supposed to.
She smiled when she was supposed to.
But she barely heard what Elena was saying.
Her mind was somewhere else.
Two things kept repeating in her head, Before Q3.
Before he's out of the picture.
Zoe thought about Julian.
Earlier that afternoon, he had stood in the sitting room doorway and watched her read to Sophie.
There had been something different in his eyes.
Something softer, Almost human.
But the moment he remembered who he was, that softness disappeared.
He had become cold again.
Zoe thought about how much she truly disliked him.
She really did.
But then she thought about what she had just read.
She suddenly understood something.
Disliking someone and wanting them dead were two very different things.
And there was one thought that kept coming back to her.
I have to tell him.
She had to tell the man who thought folding his towels the wrong way was a serious problem that someone he trusted was planning to kill him.
Zoe almost laughed at how crazy the situation was.
But the sound that came out was closer to a cry.
She quickly swallowed it.
Then she turned toward the linen closet before Elena could notice.
That night, Zoe didn't sleep.
She lay on her small bed and stared at the ceiling.
The flash drive was still under her mattress.
It felt like it was burning a hole through it.
She kept thinking about the conversation she would have with Julian.
How would she tell him?
What would he say?
How would he look at her?
And most importantly, would he believe her?
She went over the conversation in her head again and again.
By four in the morning, she had her answer.
He wouldn't believe her.
Why would he?
She was only the housekeeper.
The woman who couldn't even fold his towels the way he wanted.
The woman he barely noticed unless something was wrong.
If she walked into his study tomorrow and told him that his head of security was planning to have him killed, what would happen?
She could lose her job immediately.
Or worse.
Marcus could somehow find out that she knew.
Zoe needed proof, Real proof.
Something nobody could argue against.
Something that would make even a calm and controlled man like Julian Blackwood stop and listen to her.
And that meant one thing.
She needed to get into Marcus's office.
Zoe closed her eyes.
Her heart was still beating hard.
She knew exactly how dangerous that idea was.
Getting into Marcus's office was a terrible idea.
Maybe even a crazy one.
But she had already made up her mind.
Some stubborn part of her had been there since she was a child.
Years of moving through foster homes had taught her many things.
One of them was that she could never simply walk away when someone was in danger.
Not even when that person was a man who had never once thanked her.
She was going to find proof.
She just didn't know one important thing yet.
Marcus already suspected that his flash drive was missing.
And three doors down the hall, Marcus stood quietly in the darkness.
He was checking every camera in the building.
He wanted to know exactly who had taken it.
Julian's POVJulian stood outside Zoe's door for almost two full minutes before he finally found the courage to knock. He knew how ridiculous that was.He was a grown man.He had faced difficult business deals, angry investors, and situations that could affect his entire company without showing fear.Yet here he was, standing outside his housekeeper's door at nearly one in the morning, nervous about knocking. He took a slow breath.Earlier that evening, he had read the maintenance records three more times. The answer hadn't changed. The elevator had been inspected only two weeks earlier. There had been no problems. No warnings.Nothing that could explain why it had suddenly stopped between floors that afternoon. But that wasn't the only thing bothering him.He kept thinking about the conversation he had had with Zoe that morning. He remembered her voice. He remembered the hurt in her face. Most of all, he remembered what she had said. She had told him she had been trying to survive hi
Zoe's POVThe man was waiting for her near the laundry room. That was how Zoe knew, almost immediately, that something was wrong.Staff members didn't usually stay around the laundry room. There was no reason to.The place was nothing special. It was just a room filled with washing machines, bottles of detergent, piles of towels, and the constant low sound of the building's machines working behind the walls. But the man was standing there. He leaned against the doorframe with his arms crossed.A security badge was clipped to his belt.Zoe had never seen that badge before. She slowed down as she approached, a basket of clean towels balanced against her hip."Long day?" the man asked."Something like that."Zoe tried to walk past him.He didn't exactly block her way.But he didn't move either.Something about him made the small hairs on the back of her neck stand up.She knew that feeling. She had felt it many years ago when she was a child in foster care. Sometimes, she could walk into
Julian's POVHe told himself he wasn't thinking about her.He repeated that to himself all morning. He told himself while taking two phone calls. He told himself during lunch, even though he barely touched his food. He told himself again during his meeting with Arthur about the merger he had decided to stop.Yet, at 4:47 that afternoon, he was still thinking about her.Julian stepped into the private elevator, his laptop bag hanging over one shoulder. His mind was somewhere else entirely as the elevator doors closed behind him.The elevator began moving down.He was between the fortieth and thirty-ninth floors when everything suddenly changed. The elevator stopped. It wasn't a normal stop. There was no gentle slowing down as it reached a floor. Instead, the elevator gave a hard, sudden jerk that threw Julian sideways into the mirrored wall.He quickly grabbed the railing to steady himself. The lights flickered once. Then twice. After that, they went out.A dim amber emergency light ca
Zoe's POVJulian was already at his desk, dressed and working on his laptop. He had the quiet, serious look of a man who didn't like being disturbed before nine in the morning."Your coffee," Zoe said as she placed it on his desk. Then, before she could change her mind, she added, "I need to tell you something."He didn't look up."If this is about the towels—""It's not about the towels."Her voice came out sharper than she intended.Julian finally looked up. One eyebrow rose slightly at her tone."I found something," Zoe said. "A flash drive. Marcus dropped it near the trash on the security floor."Something changed in Julian's face.It wasn't concern. Not yet.He simply looked at her with calm attention, the same way he looked at reports from the board."And?""And I opened it."She forced herself to continue, even though his expression became colder."There were messages. Between Marcus and someone he called 'R.' They were talking about..." She paused, trying to find the right wor
Zoe's POVMarcus's fingers were still resting on the folder.Zoe watched them through the small gap under the desk panel. She was close enough to see the faint scar across his knuckles. For some strange reason, her mind suddenly became very clear. This is how it ends.Hiding under a desk at six in the morning because I couldn't mind my own business."That's not how I left that," he said again. This time, his voice was quieter, almost as if he were talking to himself.A phone buzzed somewhere above her.Marcus's hand moved away from the folder."Yeah," he said, and his voice immediately became smooth and professional. "No, I'm in the office now. Give me two minutes. I'll check the access logs myself."Zoe heard his footsteps. They slowly moved away. Then the door clicked shut behind him.His voice became quieter as he walked down the hallway.Still, Zoe didn't move. She didn't trust her legs. She didn't trust the sudden silence around her.She stayed there and counted to sixty in her h
Zoe's POVThe security floor was empty at 6 a.m.That was exactly why Zoe had chosen that time.As she walked down the service stairs, her heart was beating hard against her chest. She kept telling herself that what she was doing made sense, It was reasonable. If someone found out that their boss's life was in danger, wouldn't they try to find proof instead of just sitting and doing nothing? At least, that's what Zoe told herself. But right now, her hands were shaking badly. She almost dropped her master keycard twice before finally putting it into the card reader. The light turned red, Denied.“Come on,” she whispered, trying again.“Come on, come on…”She tried one more time. This time, the light turned green. The door clicked open.Zoe quickly stepped into Marcus Webb's office. Her heart was beating so loudly that she could hear it in her ears. She carefully closed the door behind her.She was so nervous that even the small sound of the door locking made her feel like the whole bui
