Zoe's POV

The security floor was empty at 6 a.m.

That was exactly why Zoe had chosen that time.

As she walked down the service stairs, her heart was beating hard against her chest.

She kept telling herself that what she was doing made sense, It was reasonable.

If someone found out that their boss's life was in danger, wouldn't they try to find proof instead of just sitting and doing nothing?

At least, that's what Zoe told herself.

But right now, her hands were shaking badly.

She almost dropped her master keycard twice before finally putting it into the card reader.

The light turned red, Denied.

“Come on,” she whispered, trying again.

“Come on, come on…”

She tried one more time.

This time, the light turned green.

The door clicked open.

Zoe quickly stepped into Marcus Webb's office.

Her heart was beating so loudly that she could hear it in her ears.

She carefully closed the door behind her.

She was so nervous that even the small sound of the door locking made her feel like the whole building had heard it.

The office was very neat, Too neat.

It looked like Marcus kept everything in its exact place.

There were no family pictures.

No personal things, No mess.

Just a desk, two dark computer screens, and a locked filing cabinet in the corner.

Zoe's stomach tightened the moment she saw it.

Of course it was locked.

Of course nothing was going to be easy.

She walked over to the desk anyway.

She tried the drawers one after another.

Locked.

Locked.

Locked.

Then the bottom drawer moved.

It opened with a soft scraping sound.

Zoe looked inside.

There were folders.

Most of them contained building plans.

They looked like the same kind of detailed drawings she had seen on the flash drive.

Her hands were still shaking as she pulled out her phone.

She started taking pictures of the pages.

She turned the pages quickly.

Click.

Click.

Click.

The sound of her camera seemed very loud in the quiet office.

She kept taking pictures.

She was already three folders in when she heard something.

Footsteps.

They were close.

Someone was walking down the hallway.

Slowly.

That somehow scared her more than if the person had been running.

Zoe froze.

No.

No, no, no.

She quickly pushed the folder back into the drawer.

This time, she didn't care if it was placed neatly.

She looked around the small office.

There was no closet.

No second door.

Nothing she could hide behind.

There was only the desk.

And the desk wasn't big enough to properly hide her.

There was also a window.

But it didn't open.

The footsteps stopped outside the door.

Zoe's heart began beating even faster.

Then she heard it.

The clear sound of a keycard being taken from someone's pocket.

For one second, Zoe's mind went completely blank.

She didn't know what to do.

Then she acted without thinking.

She quickly dropped to the floor and squeezed herself into the small space under the desk.

Just as she got under it, the door opened.

The lights came on, filling the room with bright white light.

Zoe pressed her back against the cold bottom of the desk.

She put one hand over her mouth.

She didn't dare make a sound.

Through the small space under the desk, she could see a pair of polished shoes.

The person walked into the room.

Then stopped.

Zoe knew those shoes.

Marcus Webb.

She watched as he walked toward his desk.

The same desk she was hiding under.

He placed something on the desk.

There was a small metal sound as it touched the surface.

Zoe held her breath.

Marcus started humming.

Actually humming.

It was quiet and slightly out of tune.

He sounded completely relaxed.

As if nothing was wrong.

As if he had no idea someone was hiding under his desk.

Zoe stayed completely still.

Marcus was only a few feet away from her.

She could see the shine on his shoes through the small gap.

This was the man who wanted Julian Blackwood dead.

And he was standing right above her.

Checking his phone like it was just another normal Tuesday morning.

Then his humming suddenly stopped.

Zoe's heart seemed to stop with it.

“Huh,” Marcus said quietly.

He was looking down at his bottom drawer.

“That's not how I left that.”

Zoe didn't breathe.

She didn't even move.

She was terrified that even the smallest sound would give her away.

Marcus reached for the drawer.

It slowly opened.

Zoe watched his hand move toward the folders.

Then his fingers stopped.

They were touching the exact folder she had just photographed.

The humming was completely gone now.

The room became silent.

Zoe could feel the fear growing inside her.

Marcus had noticed.

He knew something was wrong.

And in that moment, Zoe understood something even worse.

Marcus had just realized that he was no longer the only person in the building keeping secrets.

Julian's POVJulian stood outside Zoe's door for almost two full minutes before he finally found the courage to knock. He knew how ridiculous that was.He was a grown man.He had faced difficult business deals, angry investors, and situations that could affect his entire company without showing fear.Yet here he was, standing outside his housekeeper's door at nearly one in the morning, nervous about knocking. He took a slow breath.Earlier that evening, he had read the maintenance records three more times. The answer hadn't changed. The elevator had been inspected only two weeks earlier. There had been no problems. No warnings.Nothing that could explain why it had suddenly stopped between floors that afternoon. But that wasn't the only thing bothering him.He kept thinking about the conversation he had had with Zoe that morning. He remembered her voice. He remembered the hurt in her face. Most of all, he remembered what she had said. She had told him she had been trying to survive hi

  • THE HOUSE KEEPER    Chapter 9:A word of Advice

Zoe's POVThe man was waiting for her near the laundry room. That was how Zoe knew, almost immediately, that something was wrong.Staff members didn't usually stay around the laundry room. There was no reason to.The place was nothing special. It was just a room filled with washing machines, bottles of detergent, piles of towels, and the constant low sound of the building's machines working behind the walls. But the man was standing there. He leaned against the doorframe with his arms crossed.A security badge was clipped to his belt.Zoe had never seen that badge before. She slowed down as she approached, a basket of clean towels balanced against her hip."Long day?" the man asked."Something like that."Zoe tried to walk past him.He didn't exactly block her way.But he didn't move either.Something about him made the small hairs on the back of her neck stand up.She knew that feeling. She had felt it many years ago when she was a child in foster care. Sometimes, she could walk into

  • THE HOUSE KEEPER    Chapter 8:The Elevator

Julian's POVHe told himself he wasn't thinking about her.He repeated that to himself all morning. He told himself while taking two phone calls. He told himself during lunch, even though he barely touched his food. He told himself again during his meeting with Arthur about the merger he had decided to stop.Yet, at 4:47 that afternoon, he was still thinking about her.Julian stepped into the private elevator, his laptop bag hanging over one shoulder. His mind was somewhere else entirely as the elevator doors closed behind him.The elevator began moving down.He was between the fortieth and thirty-ninth floors when everything suddenly changed. The elevator stopped. It wasn't a normal stop. There was no gentle slowing down as it reached a floor. Instead, the elevator gave a hard, sudden jerk that threw Julian sideways into the mirrored wall.He quickly grabbed the railing to steady himself. The lights flickered once. Then twice. After that, they went out.A dim amber emergency light ca

  • THE HOUSE KEEPER    Chapter seven: Paranoid

Zoe's POVJulian was already at his desk, dressed and working on his laptop. He had the quiet, serious look of a man who didn't like being disturbed before nine in the morning."Your coffee," Zoe said as she placed it on his desk. Then, before she could change her mind, she added, "I need to tell you something."He didn't look up."If this is about the towels—""It's not about the towels."Her voice came out sharper than she intended.Julian finally looked up. One eyebrow rose slightly at her tone."I found something," Zoe said. "A flash drive. Marcus dropped it near the trash on the security floor."Something changed in Julian's face.It wasn't concern. Not yet.He simply looked at her with calm attention, the same way he looked at reports from the board."And?""And I opened it."She forced herself to continue, even though his expression became colder."There were messages. Between Marcus and someone he called 'R.' They were talking about..." She paused, trying to find the right wor

  • THE HOUSE KEEPER    Chapter 6:Thirty Seconds

Zoe's POVMarcus's fingers were still resting on the folder.Zoe watched them through the small gap under the desk panel. She was close enough to see the faint scar across his knuckles. For some strange reason, her mind suddenly became very clear. This is how it ends.Hiding under a desk at six in the morning because I couldn't mind my own business."That's not how I left that," he said again. This time, his voice was quieter, almost as if he were talking to himself.A phone buzzed somewhere above her.Marcus's hand moved away from the folder."Yeah," he said, and his voice immediately became smooth and professional. "No, I'm in the office now. Give me two minutes. I'll check the access logs myself."Zoe heard his footsteps. They slowly moved away. Then the door clicked shut behind him.His voice became quieter as he walked down the hallway.Still, Zoe didn't move. She didn't trust her legs. She didn't trust the sudden silence around her.She stayed there and counted to sixty in her h
