The first time I saw him again in the light of day, I forgot how to breathe. I never imagined that the man who had haunted my dreams and whose child I bore would be the CEO of the company I was to work in. It seemed like something out of a ridiculous soap opera.

Jasper Kent stood at the head of the conference table, a wall of glass behind him spilling sunlight over his broad shoulders. He was exactly as I remembered, sharp jaw, eyes like storm clouds, but there was no trace of the disoriented man from that night. Here, he was power formed into flesh, a man who owned the room simply by existing.

And he didn’t even know me.

“Miss Gray,” he said, voice low and clipped, as if testing my name on his tongue. “You’ll be presenting your proposal today, correct?”

For the briefest second, his eyes narrowed. His nostrils flared almost imperceptibly, as though he’d caught a scent he couldn’t place. His gaze lingered too long, unsettled.

My breath hitched and palms dampened instantly once his attention was fixed on me. I clutched the folder tighter. “Yes, Mr. Kent.”

Vanessa sat at his right hand, smiling faintly, her nails tapping against her notebook as if marking time until I failed.

I began my presentation, voice steady at first. The slides projected onto the wall, glowing with the numbers I had worked on for months. Every statistic, every market projection had been my lifeline.

“This proposal,” I said, pointing to the chart, “is built around integrating AI-driven logistics into your current infrastructure. With predictive algorithms, we can anticipate shipping delays before they happen, cut transport costs by at least 20%, and strengthen Kent Enterprises’ trade routes with my pack’s land access.”

A low chuckle came from one of the older investors. “Ambitious. AI predicting the future? Sounds like wishful thinking.”

Before I could reply, Vanessa leaned forward, her tone sugar-sweet but sharp as glass. “Exactly. The market is flooded with untested AI startups. What makes yours different? Why should Kent Enterprises gamble on projections that may collapse in three years?”

I inhaled slowly, forcing calm. “Because ours isn’t untested. We’ve already run pilots in smaller trade hubs, and the results were consistent. Predictive rerouting cut delays by 17% in the first month alone. Imagine that scaled across your global network.”

The laughter faltered. Silence prickled the room.

Vanessa’s smile didn’t break. “Still optimistic.”

I met her gaze squarely. “Optimism is seeing potential. Strategy is proving it works. I’m offering both.”

For the first time, Jasper leaned forward, storm-colored eyes fixed on me. “Continue,” he said softly, though it felt like a command.

Somehow, I did.

Finally, Jasper leaned back in his chair and gave his verdict. “It’s efficient, precise, and very ambitious.” He paused, gaze never leaving mine. His voice carried a faint edge, almost as though he was speaking to himself as much as the room. “And familiar. I like it.”

Relief washed over me so sudden my knees nearly buckled.

Vanessa’s smile tightened. “But, sir—don’t you think her projections are a little… optimistic? She doesn’t have the experience Kent Enterprises usually requires for this scale of partnership.”

Jasper’s reply was immediate, unwavering. “Then she’ll gain it under us.”

The finality in his tone silenced the room. Vanessa lowered her eyes, but I caught the flicker of fury in them. But I didn't pay her any heed. I was so happy that my wolf's tail was wagging. This was a good beginning and I would work hard to keep it that way.

When the meeting ended, I gathered my papers, trying to slip out unnoticed. But Jasper’s voice stopped me.

“Miss Gray. Stay behind, I need to have a talk with you."

The others filtered out while I stood looking like a frozen goose. Vanessa hesitated but a cold gaze from Jasper had her on her way. She shot me a poisonous look before exiting. The door clicked shut, leaving me alone with him.

I swallowed hard. The last time I had been alone with this man, my entire life had changed.

He circled the table slowly, his movements precise, deliberate. When he stopped in front of me, I felt small beneath his gaze.

“You did well,” he said. “Better than I expected.”

“Thank you,” I managed, my voice barely above a whisper.

His eyes narrowed slightly. “Though you seemed nervous. As if something weighed on you.”

The words cut deep. If only he knew. I forced a faint smile. “Just the stakes of the deal, Mr. Kent. Nothing more.”

He studied me in silence, and for a terrifying moment, I thought he saw straight through me—to that field floor, to Johnathan, to the secret I carried like a brand.

"Is this your first time in the city?" He suddenly asked.

"Yes." I answered unsurely. "Why do you ask?"

"Nothing. You just seem so familiar but never mind that."

His eyes flickered with something, recognition perhaps. But it slipped away before he could grasp it. He then turned away, dismissing me with a nod. “Don’t disappoint me.”

I escaped the room with lungs aching, every nerve alight with panic and another emotion I dare not think about.

By the time I returned to my temporary office, Emilia was waiting with Johnathan, who clutched a drawing in his small hands. My assistant gave me a sympathetic smile.

“He insisted on coming to see you. Said he wanted to give you this before he forgot.”

Johnathan ran up, thrusting the paper at me. Crayon lines, uneven but proud. A stick-figure me, him, and a tall man holding our hands.

“Do you like it?” he asked, eyes shining.

I forced my smile, my heart splitting. “I love it, baby. It’s perfect.”

Emilia watched me carefully, as if she saw the crack beneath my façade. “You’re carrying too much alone,” she murmured when Johnathan ran off to play with her bag zipper.

I shook my head. “If Jasper finds out… everything falls apart.”

"If who finds out?" She asked.

I just shook my head. "Nothing." She couldn't know the truth, no one could know. Jonathan is a child that would be killed brutally is anyone found out that his father was a human. I couldn't trust anyone with this secret not even Emilia. When it comes to my son, everyone is a threat including Jasper. If Jasper knew Johnathan was his, a lot could go wrong. He could take him away from me or worse, reject us both and destroy everything I’ve built.

That night, exhaustion dragged at my bones, but sleep refused me. Every time I closed my eyes, Jasper’s face appeared—the confusion of that night, the certainty of today. The way his voice lingered like a com

mand in my veins.

I hated him for being a reminder. And still one look from him unraveled me.

The street was too quiet that night.Liora’s heels clicked softly against the pavement as she walked home, her bag clutched tight against her chest. The air smelled like rain, heavy and cold. Every sound—the rustle of leaves, the distant hum of traffic—felt louder than usual. She tried to steady her breathing. It was just another night, she told herself. Just work. Just the usual tired walk home. But deep down, her wolf didn’t believe that.Something was wrong. The scent in the air carried a hint of metal and smoke. Faint, but familiar. The same one she had sensed before—cold and sharp, like danger hiding in a shadow. Her heart began to race. She paused under a streetlight and glanced around. The light flickered, buzzing weakly before dimming again. The road stretched ahead, empty except for a few parked cars. She couldn’t see anyone, but she could feel it—eyes. Watching. Following. Her wolf stirred inside her. Don’t panic, it whispered. Just keep walking. So she did.Step by step, sh

Morning came gray again. The rain had stopped, but the clouds still hung low over the city, heavy and tired.Liora stood at the bus stop with her coffee cup, her fingers cold around the paper. She hadn’t slept well — every time she closed her eyes, she felt like someone was standing outside her window, just watching. The air was quiet except for the soft sound of tires on wet road. She told herself it was nothing. That the man from yesterday — the one by the car — had probably just been a passerby. But her wolf didn’t believe that. Her senses were too sharp now, too awake. She could smell faint traces of something familiar — the scent of someone who had been near her more than once. She turned her head slightly.A black car was parked across the street again. Same spot. Same silence.Liora’s breath caught, but she kept her face calm. She threw her coffee away and boarded the bus like nothing was wrong. At the office, she forced herself to smile at the receptionist and headed straight

The next morning came slow. The rain had stopped, but the world still smelled wet — like the city hadn’t fully woken up yet.Liora stood in front of the mirror, brushing her hair in silence. The reflection that looked back at her didn’t feel like her. Her eyes were darker, tired. Her body felt heavy.Jonathan’s voice called from the kitchen, “Mama, I finished my cereal!”She smiled faintly and replied, “Good job, sweetheart. Go wear your shoes.”The girl sat beside him, swinging her legs as she helped fold napkins. Mami hummed softly in the background, her movements steady and grounding — like always.Everything looked normal. But Liora’s wolf was still uneasy. That sense of being watched hadn’t left her since last night.Even now, standing by the window, she felt it again — that faint tug, as if someone’s eyes were on her from a distance. She scanned the street, pretending to adjust the curtain.Nothing. Just people going to work, a street vendor selling bread, a boy running with a b

The night had a strange quietness to it.Not peaceful — heavy. The kind of quiet that made every footstep sound too loud, every shadow seem too close.Liora pulled her coat tighter around her as she stepped out of the building. The rain had started as a drizzle, soft and cold, touching her cheeks like a whisper. Streetlights glowed gold through the mist, their reflections stretching across wet pavements. She walked fast. Not because she was late — but because her instincts told her to.Her wolf stirred beneath her skin, restless. It wasn’t fear. Not yet.Just the kind of tension that warned her to listen, to pay attention. The city wasn’t as alive now. Most people had gone home. Cars passed occasionally, their tires hissing against the road. The sound faded too quickly.Liora’s heels clicked softly as she turned into a smaller street — a shortcut she often used. It was darker, quieter, but faster.Halfway down, she stopped. The sound of footsteps echoed faintly behind her.She turned

The morning light came in slow and pale, crawling through the thin curtains like a whisper. The little apartment was quiet, except for the faint sound of a kettle heating on the stove and the sleepy hum of Jonathan’s voice as he played on the floor with his toy cars.Liora stood by the sink, rinsing her cup, her hair tied up loosely. Her mind felt heavy even though the day had barely begun. Sleep had come and gone in bits, leaving her tired, restless. Her wolf had been uneasy all night, pacing beneath her skin as if something unseen waited just beyond the walls. She turned slightly when she heard small footsteps. The nameless girl appeared from the bedroom doorway, rubbing her eyes. Her hair was messy, her small frame wrapped in one of Liora’s shirts that almost swallowed her whole.“Morning,” Liora said softly. The girl nodded, her voice small. “Good morning.”Jonathan glanced up from his toys. “You woke up late,” he said, his tone halfway between teasing and serious. The girl blinke

The city was quieter than usual that night.Rain had started again, slow and steady, painting the streets with silver light. The sky looked heavy, as if it was carrying too many secrets.Liora stepped out of the building, her coat pulled tight around her. The wind brushed her hair across her face, cool and soft. She walked quickly down the sidewalk, her heels clicking against the wet pavement. She had stayed longer than she planned.Too long. Her thoughts were a mess. She kept seeing Jasper’s face — the calmness in his eyes, the warmth in his voice, the way he’d said her name as if it meant more than just an employee’s name. It unsettled her.Because deep down, she knew she was already fighting something she didn’t want to name. When she finally reached home, the lights inside were dim. Jonathan was asleep on the couch, one arm hanging off the side. Elara was curled up beside him, her little hand holding his shirt. The sight made Liora smile softly despite her exhaustion. She took off
