Sera’s POV ;

I did not breathe properly, this wasn't because I could not breathe, it was because for the fact that breathing right now simply felt like a permission that would allow something outside of me to notice me.

The window was slightly covered by thick black curtains, it was night time and I could feel the cool breeze, the air was crisp and fresh.

I also noticed that outside, the night time in Duskborne Palace was way too quiet, it was even more quiet than a graveyard, as if there was no single person inhabiting it

I took a deep breath and exhaled deeply, and that was when I saw it.

A tall dark shadow, it wasn’t passing, it wasn’t moving or anything, it was just standing there a little further off my window.

For a moment, I didn’t read meaning to it, I didn’t see it as something to be alarmed or worried about.

Werewolves didn’t climb palace walls like robbers at night, and security guards could never stand outside royal Luna vicinity like ghosts.

But yet there was this shadow, as I looked more closely at it, it was definitely the shadow of a man.

The way he stood against the stone, with so much calm and composure and he blended like a camouflage as if he had been there for like a lifetime.

I stood at my window, slowly observing the figure and my fingers began to sweat as they clenched the blade under my pillow.

A few moments later, I noticed the figure move, he moved with so much carefulness and precision, and he wasn’t moving towards the window.

Infact, he was moving away from it.

My brain soon realized what that meant, and I instantly froze on the spot. If he was moving away from the window, then that means he was an obvious threat and there was imminent danger because it meant he was trying to get in.

Come to think of it, he had probably been there for hours, calmly and patiently watching, observing and waiting for the right moment.

My mind began to think a lot of things at the same time, fear gripped my heart and it started beating and pounding with speed and intensity. What did he want? Who was he ? What did he come here for ?

Was this an assassination attempt? Or was it internal palace security surveillance? Or perhaps it was Lira’s network already testing me.

What if it was even something worse? Something I probably had no idea about.

I payed more attention to it and noticed it had shifted its head and tilted it slightly.

It was as if he knew I was awake and observing him.

He took a turn and then jumped off the ledge, my stomach rumbled and I could feel my heart skip.

As a defense mechanism, I quickly rushed to the window without even thinking twice, and I yanked the curtain off the rails hoping to catch him or see him move.

But nothing, it was just empty space, empty air. I looked at the stone ledge, it was bare and dry. No traces or signs of anyone there except.

My eyes caught a faint mark, almost invisible. It was three scratches in the stone, someone had inserted them there on purpose, he wanted it to be seen, or he wanted me to see it.

I inhaled and then exhaled deeply, and my pulse and heart beat slowed down instead of increasing and even multiplying rapidly.

I knew that mark, I had definitely come across it before, I knew I had seen it somewhere because it seemed familiar.

But not here, I had definitely not seen it in this life, I took a faint breath and touched the scratches with my fingers.

What I felt was completely impossible.

I began to slowly move back from it, my heart pounding but in a controlled and very dangerous manner.

The type of way I felt just before an ambush. “No this can’t be, it’s just not possible,” I whispered silently to myself.

I remembered the symbol, it belonged to the Borderland scouts, they were human beings.

But last I could recall, they were all dead or weren’t they supposed to be ? Yes they were.

Soon, there was a gentle knock on my door and I sprung to my feet, alert and vigilant as ever.

There was a brief silence and pause, and then two knocks followed.

The knocks weren’t aggressive, but they seemed very urgent and deliberate.

For a moment, I paused and kept quiet, I did not answer or say a word in response. “Commander Vale,” I heard a voice from outside, it was definitely the voice of the person knocking.

It was a calm and familiar voice, one that made my heart shudder and my adrenaline rush.

It was Cael, I heaved a sigh of relief and lowered my blade slightly, but then I didn’t move.

“What the hell is your problem? It’s late, I said, feeling a little annoyed now.

“Yeah, I know it’s late,” he replied and then paused for a moment.

“You know what ? Can I come in?” He asked, as if demanding that I allow him in.

I sighed again and took a glance at the door, there wasn’t any lock and then I breathed in and exhaled sharply again.

“Why do you want to come in Cael?” I asked, this rkm

Cael.

Of course it was him.

I lowered the blade slightly but didn’t move.

“It’s late,” I said.

“I know,” he replied.

A pause.

Then: “May I come in?”

I stared at the door.

There was no lock.

Of course there wasn’t.

I exhaled slowly. “Why?”

Another pause.

“I felt you wake up.”

That made my grip tighten again.

“That’s not an answer.”

“It is the only one I have.”

Silence stretched between us.

I opened the door.

Not fully.

Just enough.

  • THE HUMAN LUNA   Chapter Seven: The Strange Figure

SERA’S POV; Cael stood there looking at me, just exactly the same way he always used to.He was calm, elegant and composed, with his hair a little loosened as if his thought had been interrupted rather than his sleep. What always struck me about him was that there was no guard, no entourage, no security, just him and himself alone.I surveyed his body from head to toe, and I could not help but notice that his hands were empty.“Hey, did something happen?” I asked him, wondering why he had such countenance. He glared at me and sighed, then his eyes went straight to the window, and then back at me. “Yes, something happened,” he replied, his face turning slightly towards the window again. I felt a tight nudge on my stomach.“What happened? Talk to me,” I said, already getting impatient and anxious.Despite the fact that I was pressuring him and rushing him to talk, he did not respond to me and answer my question immediately, and that alone told me everything I needed to know.I inhale

  • THE HUMAN LUNA   Chapter Five: Eleven Days

Sera's POVI stared at him and didn't move.He stood one step inside the room, relaxed as always, watching me with those amber eyes that gave away exactly nothing. The firelight caught the angles of his face and made him look like something carved rather than born.I hated that he was attractive. It felt like a personal insult."You said we would discuss what this marriage looks like," I said "So discuss."He moved further into the room, toward the sitting area, where two chairs faced each other in front of the fireplace. He sat in one of them and looked at me with an expression that said well?I crossed the room and sat in the other one.If he was surprised I did sit with just a gesture, he didn’t show it."The bond has to be real," he said. "Not performed. Real. Wolf noble houses will be watching… If they believe this marriage is hollow they will use it against both of us.""Real means different things to different people, and–""In wolf culture it means witnessed," he cut me off. "

  • THE HUMAN LUNA   Chapter Four: The Gilded Cage

Sera's POVWe arrived at Dusk borne Palace by nightfall, which I suspected was deliberate. The palace looked almost impossible at night, lit from within by thousands of lights that turned every window gold, the dark stone towers rising against the sky like something that had grown there rather than been built. The gates were twice the height of Thornwell’s and moved silently, which meant they were maintained constantly, which meant this place had resources that would make Betha weep for an entirely different reason.I kept my face neutral.Inside was worse. Everything was enormous, beautiful and deliberately overwhelming ceilings that made you feel small, corridors lined with tapestries that told wolf history in vivid thread, floors so polished I could see myself walking across them. Warmth everywhere, real warmth, from fireplaces large enough to stand in.I’d spent three winters rationing firewood. I kept walking.I was given a wing. Not a room. Four rooms connected by an inner corri

  • THE HUMAN LUNA   Chapter Three: The Weight of Yes

Sera’s POVMorning came grey and cold.I hadn’t slept all through the night. I’d sat at my window and watched the cooking fires light up one by one in the settlement below as people rose before dawn the way hungry people always do… because empty stomachs don’t let you sleep past first light.I washed my face, strapped on my sword, braided my hair back tight the way I always did before something difficult, then I walked down to the outer yard.I stopped the moment I saw him.Cael Duskborne. This early? But he was not alone this time. Six wolf guards in full Duskborne armor flanked him on each side, standing perfectly still in the pale morning light. Massive, silent, expressionless. Not a threat exactly, more like a reminder. A quiet demonstration of exactly what was waiting beyond Thornwall's walls. He stood at the front of them, still in that same unhurried way, hands clasped behind his back, watching me cross the yard toward him.His amber eyes moved to my sword, then back to my face

  • THE HUMAN LUNA   Chapter two: The weight of “Yes”

Sera's POVI stopped a few inches from him, studying him for a long moment. He let me, didn’t rush me, didn’t smile, just stood there in my yard with the morning light caught in his copper hair, waiting like a man entirely certain time was on his side.I sheathed my sword."I will give you my answer by sundown," I said.He nodded. "I will wait."I turned and walked back toward the fortress without another word. My guards fell into step around me. I kept my face forward, my spine straight, my steps even.I didn’t let myself think about the way his eyes had found mine on the wall before he had even seen my face clearly. I didn’t let myself wonder how he’d known exactly where to look.Magnus was already waiting for me at the top of the inner stairs. He’d his staff in both hands and his face was the colour of ash. He’d clearly overheard everything. I could tell by the way he was looking at me."Sera–" he started."Not now," I cut him off."You don't understand, there are things I need to
