Chapter 3: The Woman in My Place

"Two days ago?" I echoed, my voice barely a whisper in the empty kitchen. "Sarah, that's impossible, two days ago, Mark was supposedly trapped in a hotel room in Chicago."

"Clara, I'm telling you, I was downtown, and I saw him," Sarah said, her voice dropping lower, sounding frantic. "He was getting into a black car outside the Grand Azure Lounge and Clara... he wasn't alone, he was with…"

Suddenly, a loud crash echoed through Sarah’s side of the phone, followed by a man's sharp voice calling her name.

Sarah gasped. "I have to go, i can't talk right now."

"Wait! Sarah, who was he with?" I demanded, gripping the granite counter. "Who did you see?"

"Meet me at the corner café near my office at noon," Sarah rushed out. "Don't tell Mark we're speaking. Please, Clara."

The line went dead.

I stood in the kitchen, shocked and confused, The Grand Azure Lounge, the exact same rooftop bar where I had seen the man in the suit on the livestream last night. Mark had sworn he was freezing in Chicago, and I had believed his perfectly crafted hotel-room alibi. I had let him hold me, let him kiss me, let him make me feel like a paranoid, ungrateful wife for even questioning his devotion.

At 11:50 AM, I was sitting in a booth at the back of the café, my hands wrapped around a mug of green tea I hadn't taken a single sip from.

The bell above the door chimed, and Sarah walked in, she looked entirely different from her usual polished self, she was wearing dark sunglasses, her hair was tied back in a messy knot, and she kept looking over her shoulder.

When she slid into the booth across from me, she wouldn't meet my eyes.

"Sarah," I said immediately, leaning across the table. "Tell me exactly what you saw, who was Mark with?"

Sarah swallowed hard, tracing the rim of a sugar packet with a trembling finger. "Clara... I think I made a mistake."

I froze. "What?"

"I was stressed this morning," Sarah stammered, finally looking up, her eyes were evasive, guarded. "I was looking at someone from far away, across a busy street, it was dark. Honestly, it probably wasn't even him. I shouldn't have called and panicked you."

"Sarah, you explicitly said he was getting into a car outside the Grand Azure Lounge," I pressed,

"You were going to tell me who he was with before someone interrupted you, why are you suddenly backtracking?"

An unexpected event had clearly spooked her, but instead of answering my question, Sarah’s expression hardened into something almost pitying.

"I'm backtracking because I'm worried about you, Clara," she said softly, reaching across the table to touch my hand, i pulled back slightly. "Look at you. You're shaking over a misunderstood phone call, you need to stop building your entire life around your husband."

"Excuse me?" I blinked, completely thrown by the sudden lecture.

"I'm serious," Sarah continued, her tone becoming oddly vague and philosophical. "You used to be the most capable, ambitious woman I knew, you used to run boardrooms, now, you just sit in that big house waiting for Mark to come home, do you even know who you are outside of being his wife anymore? More importantly... do you truly know the man your husband has become?"

On the surface, they sounded like reasonable words from a concerned friend but looking at Sarah's evasive eyes and the nervous way she kept checking her phone, the words felt incredibly suspicious.

Why was she deflecting? Two possibilities slammed into my mind. Option A: Sarah had discovered the affair, gotten threatened, and was now indirectly trying to warn me to protect myself. Option B: Sarah herself was the mistress, she realized I was getting close to the truth, and she was testing the waters to see exactly how much I already knew.

"I know exactly who my husband is," I said coldly, gathering my purse and standing up. "And I'm starting to realize I don't know my friends."

I walked out of the café, leaving her sitting there in stunned silence.

When I pulled into my driveway an hour later, Mark's car was already parked out front.

I walked into the house to find him in the living room, humming cheerfully as he unpacked his overnight leather travel bag, he looked up and smiled brilliantly when I walked in.

"Hey, beautiful," Mark said, tossing a few dress shirts onto the sofa. "I came home for lunch to surprise you, but you were out, where did you go?"

"Just went to grab a coffee," I said smoothly, forcing my heart to slow down. I walked over to help him unpack. "I actually thought I saw Sarah while I was out."

Mark paused but his eyes flicked to my face before returning to his bag.

"Sarah?" he echoed, his tone completely casual. "Wow, i haven't seen your best friend in a long time, how is she doing?"

The lie was so effortless, so smooth, that it was terrifying, if Sarah really was the mistress, or if he really had run into her two days ago, he was masking it perfectly.

"She seemed fine," I replied, forcing a soft smile. "Go take a shower, Mark, you smell like the office. I'll finish unpacking your bag."

"You're the best," he murmured, leaning in to kiss my cheek. "I'll be right down."

The second I heard the bathroom door click shut upstairs and the shower water turn on, my polite smile vanished.

I turned back to the leather travel bag, my hands moved quickly, systematically checking every pocket, every zipper, and every seam. I dug past his shaving kit, checked his laptop sleeve, and ran my fingers along the bottom lining.

There was a subtle, unnatural bump near the corner seam.

I pulled a pen from my purse, jammed the tip into the cheap stitching of the hidden lining, and ripped it open.

Sitting in the hollow space between the leather layers was a small, square foil packet. I pulled it out, my fingers trembling violently.

It was an unused condom.

It was a specialized, expensive brand because of my medical birth control, Mark and I hadn't used condoms in over eight years.

This was the undeniable proof, this was the absolute confirmation that all the previous abnormalities, the livestream, the perfume, the texts weren't just my imagination, the perfect husband, the man who had just kissed my cheek and told me he loved me, was sleeping with someone else.

A raw, agonizing sob tore out of my throat, but I clamped my hand over my mouth to muffle the sound, tears spilled over my cheeks, dropping onto the foil packet in my hand.

I wanted to scream, I wanted to march upstairs, throw open the shower door, and throw the condom right in his lying, manipulative face.

I wanted to watch him panic, I wanted to watch his perfect facade crumble but as I stood there in the quiet living room, a terrifying clarity washed over me.

This was my first true test.

If I confronted him right now with a single condom, what would happen? He was a master manipulator, he would invent another bulletproof lie, he would claim it was a joke gag gift from a coworker, or that he bought it years ago and forgot it was in the bag. Confronting him would only warn him that I was suspicious, giving him time to destroy the real evidence and hide the mistress better.

I wiped the tears off my face, for the first time in our marriage, I chose silence.

I pulled out my phone, snapped three high-resolution photos of the condom with the bag's lining in the background, and shoved the foil packet right back into the hidden pocket where I found it. I smoothed the leather back down, perfectly concealing the tear.

The woman who passively waited for explanations was dead, she died the moment I held that foil packet, grom this second onward, I was actively hunting the truth.

Ten minutes later, Mark walked downstairs, toweling his hair dry, he looked at me, completely unaware that the power dynamic in our house had just violently shifted.

"Did you finish my bag, honey?" he asked, walking over to wrap his arms around my waist from behind.

"I did," I lied, leaning back against his chest and staring at our reflection in the hallway mirror. "Everything is exactly where it belongs."

"Are you sure you don't want me to stay home with you today?" Mark asked, adjusting his silk tie in the hallway mirror, he turned to me, his expression radiating that perfect, manufactured concern. "You looked so pale last night, Clara. You’ve been so on edge lately, i really think you should just rest, read a book, and let your mind relax.""I'll be fine, Mark," I lied smoothly, handing him his leather briefcase the same briefcase that held the foil packet I had discovered less than twenty-four hours ago. "I'm just going to do some gardening in the backyard and maybe take a nap, you go to work, I know you have a busy day.""I do, unfortunately," he sighed, leaning in to press a tender kiss to my forehead. "I'm buried in executive meetings until six. I'll call you at lunch, okay? I love you.""I love you too," I replied, the words tasting like ash on my tongue.I stood in the doorway and watched his car disappear down the street, the second his taillights vanished, I turned around and
