The document lay flat on the polished glass table, its pages thick and heavy, as though they carried more than just printed words.

Amelia Hart stared at the bold title at the top of the page.

Marriage Agreement.

Her fingers tightened around the strap of her worn handbag as her heart pounded loudly in her chest. She had read the contract three times already, yet it still felt unreal.

Across from her sat Ricardo Kingsley.

Cold. Composed. Untouchable.

He leaned back slightly in his chair, dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit, his long legs crossed with effortless authority. His sharp features were calm, unreadable, and his dark eyes held no warmth as they settled briefly on Amelia—then away again, as if she were merely part of a business transaction.

Which she was.

The silence in the private law office stretched until it became suffocating.

“This contract is simple,” Ricardo finally said, his voice low and firm. “We get married. You play the role of my wife in public. In return, you get financial support.”

He paused, then added without emotion, “Nothing more.”

Amelia swallowed.

The lawyer beside them cleared his throat and slid the pen toward her. “Miss Hart, once you sign this document, the agreement will take effect immediately.”

Her eyes flickered down to the papers again.

Five years.

That was how long the marriage would last.

No love.

No emotional involvement.

No expectations beyond appearances.

Ricardo leaned forward slightly, resting his elbows on the table. “I want to be very clear,” he said, his tone sharp but controlled. “There will be no feelings attached to this marriage. What we are doing here is strictly business.”

Amelia lifted her head and met his gaze.

“I understand,” she replied quietly.

“Good.” His eyes hardened. “Because I won’t tolerate complications.”

The words stung more than she expected.

She nodded anyway.

You knew this would happen, she reminded herself. You agreed to this.

Amelia drew in a slow breath as her mind drifted back to the reason she was sitting here in the first place.

Her tuition fees.

The eviction notice slipped under her apartment door.

The nights she spent staring at the ceiling, wondering how she would survive another month.

She had no wealthy family to rely on. No one to rescue her.

This contract wasn’t a dream—it was a lifeline.

This is not about love, she told herself firmly. It’s about survival.

Ricardo straightened and pushed the document slightly closer to her. “If you have doubts, now is the time to speak.”

She hesitated for a brief second—then shook her head.

“No,” she said. “I’ll sign.”

The lawyer exhaled in relief.

Amelia picked up the pen, her fingers trembling as she lowered it to the paper. Her name stared back at her from the blank line, waiting.

With one final breath, she signed.

The sound of the pen scratching against paper echoed loudly in the room.

Ricardo took the document next and signed without hesitation.

Just like that, it was done.

Amelia Hart had become Mrs. Kingsley—on paper.

Ricardo rose to his feet immediately. “The wedding will be small. Just family. No unnecessary attention.”

She stood as well. “Alright.”

“You’ll move into my mansion today,” he continued. “Your room is already prepared.”

Her heart skipped.

“So soon?” she asked before she could stop herself.

Ricardo’s expression remained indifferent. “This marriage starts now.”

She nodded again. “I understand.”

He turned toward the door, then paused. “One more thing.”

Amelia looked up at him.

“Don’t forget your place,” he said calmly. “You’re here to fulfill an agreement, not to interfere in my life.”

The words were clear.

Sharp.

Final.

“I won’t,” she replied softly.

Ricardo walked out without another glance.

The Kingsley mansion loomed before her like something out of a dream—or a warning.

Amelia stepped out of the car slowly, her suitcase in hand as her eyes took in the massive iron gates, the towering structure, and the manicured gardens stretching endlessly on both sides.

This was no longer her world.

A uniformed staff member bowed slightly and led her inside.

The interior was grand yet cold, every surface polished, every detail perfect—but lifeless.

“This will be your room, Mrs. Kingsley,” the maid said, opening a door on the second floor.

Amelia stepped inside.

The room was large, elegant, and beautiful—yet it felt empty.

As the door closed behind her, Amelia placed her suitcase down and sat on the edge of the bed.

She wrapped her arms around herself.

Five years, she reminded herself—just five years.

No matter how lonely it felt.

No matter how cold he was.

No matter what her heart might foolishly want.

She had made her choice.

And this mansion—this loveless marriage—was now her reality.

  • THE LOVE I GAVE HIM    Chapter 43. The moment she lost control

Amelia’s eyes froze the moment their faces drew dangerously close, the space between them shrinking until even the air felt too heavy to breathe. For a brief second, time seemed to pause around them, stretching into something fragile and suffocating. Neither of them moved. Neither of them spoke. They simply stood there, staring at each other, caught in a silent battle neither of them had prepared for.Ricardo’s grip on her waist was firm, not enough to hurt her, but enough to keep her from stepping away. His presence surrounded her completely, his familiar scent, his warmth, the intensity in his eyes—it all came crashing back at once, stirring emotions she had spent years burying deep within herself. His gaze did not waver, and that only made it worse. There was something in his eyes, something raw and unguarded, something she had never seen so clearly before. It unsettled her.No… it terrified her.For a moment, Amelia forgot how to react. Her mind went blank, her carefully built com

  • THE LOVE I GAVE HIM    Chapter 42. Too Close to Resist

Amelia’s irritation deepened the moment Ricardo let out that low, unhurried chuckle. The sound, calm and almost amused, only made the tension in her chest tighten further. It felt as though he was deliberately provoking her, as though he found her reaction entertaining rather than serious. Her brows furrowed slightly, her gaze sharpening as she looked at him.“You think this is funny?” she asked, her voice controlled but edged with annoyance.Ricardo didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he studied her, his eyes lingering on her face as though he was taking in every detail of her expression—the slight tightening of her jaw, the way her fingers curled faintly at her sides, the flicker of emotion she was trying so hard to suppress.“So that’s why you’re going,” he said calmly, as though he had come to some quiet conclusion.Amelia frowned. “What are you talking about?”Ricardo tilted his head slightly, his lips still curved in that faint, knowing smile. “Ever since we met again, you’ve be

  • THE LOVE I GAVE HIM    Chapter 41. The Question She Couldn’t Ignore

For a few seconds, Amelia simply stared at her phone as it continued to ring, her thoughts tangled between hesitation and restraint. Her fingers hovered slightly above the screen, her expression calm but her heart betraying her with its uneven rhythm. She had told herself countless times that if she ever saw Ricardo again, she would remain indifferent, unaffected, untouched by the past. But now, with his name flashing across her screen, she realized it was not as simple as she had believed. The call continued.Persistent.Unyielding.Amelia exhaled slowly, her grip tightening just a little before she finally made her decision. Without allowing herself another moment to hesitate, she tapped the screen and lifted the phone to her ear.“Hello.”Her voice was steady, controlled, giving nothing away.—At Amelia’s mansion, a sleek black car pulled up smoothly in front of the grand entrance. The gates had already been opened, and the guards stood respectfully at a distance as the car came t

  • THE LOVE I GAVE HIM    Chapter 40.Amelia's Thoughts

Amelia sat still for a long moment after Gabriel’s words settled in her mind, the weight of them pressing down on her thoughts like something she could not easily shake off. She had expected many things when she came to the United States for this deal—new opportunities, difficult negotiations, perhaps even unexpected challenges—but she had not expected this. She had not expected Ricardo to reappear so suddenly in her life, and she certainly had not expected him to position himself in a way that would force their paths to cross again and again. Her fingers tightened slightly around the file she had been holding before she slowly placed it down on Gabriel’s desk. Her expression remained calm, composed, almost unreadable, but beneath that calm surface, her thoughts were anything but steady. Was this intentional? The question echoed quietly in her mind. She knew Ricardo well enough to understand the kind of man he was. He was not impulsive, nor was he petty. He was strategic, controlled,

  • THE LOVE I GAVE HIM    Chapter 39. The Request

Amelia smiled faintly, her expression calm despite the storm of thoughts quietly stirring within her. She turned her head slightly toward Gabriel, who was still watching her with that same observant gaze.“I don’t want to talk about it now,” she said softly. “Maybe later… when I’m ready.”Her tone was gentle, but firm enough to leave no room for further questioning.Gabriel studied her for a moment, as if weighing whether to press further or let it go. In the end, he simply nodded.“Alright,” he replied. He didn’t ask anything else. The car ride continued in silence after that, but it was no longer tense. Instead, it carried a quiet understanding. Amelia appreciated that about him—he knew when to stop. Not long after, the car slowed as it approached a large, elegant mansion.Amelia’s mansion. The gates opened smoothly, and the car drove in before coming to a stop in front of the house. Amelia’s eyes widened in surprise the moment she saw who had taken the glass from her hand. The man standing beside her was tall, composed, and carried an unmistakable authority that seemed to command the entire space without effort. His presence alone shifted the atmosphere at the table, and even before he spoke, it was clear that everything had just changed. It was Gabriel. Her boss. The CEO of the company. For a brief second, Amelia simply stared at him, caught off guard by his sudden appearance. She had known he would arrive eventually, but not like this—not at the exact moment she needed an escape from the uncomfortable situation she had been trying so hard to manage.A small smile slowly formed on her lips.Gabriel didn’t say a word at first. Instead, he lifted the glass of wine—the same one Mr. Moses had been persistently pushing toward Amelia—and drank from it in one smooth motion without stopping.Amelia’s smile deepened slightly as she watched.Across the table, Mr. Moses’s
