Ricardo sat in the quiet of his bedroom, the soft glow of the desk lamp illuminating the documents spread neatly before him. Contracts, reports, financial statements—normally, these were the things that demanded his full attention. Tonight, however, they meant nothing.

His mind refused to stay in the present.

It kept drifting back to the dining room. To Amelia’s hesitant gaze. To the way her voice had trembled when she finally confessed the feelings she had been hiding for so long.

I love you.

Ricardo shut his eyes briefly, his jaw tightening. His heart had betrayed him in that moment, racing in a way he hadn’t felt in years. It had startled him—not because of her words alone, but because of how deeply they had affected him.

She wasn’t a child anymore.

Somewhere along the line, the timid girl who had entered his life through a contract had grown into a woman—gentle, resilient, and dangerously sincere.

When she looked at him, there was no calculation in her eyes, no ambition. Only honesty.

That was what frightened him the most.

He ran a hand through his hair and leaned back in his chair. “This can’t happen,” he murmured to himself. “It was never part of the agreement.”

The contract had rules. Clear boundaries. Emotions had never been included. Letting his guard down now would only complicate things—things he had spent years keeping under control.

Yet no matter how much he tried to dismiss it, the memory of Amelia’s expression lingered. She hadn’t begged him. She hadn’t demanded anything. She had simply told the truth and accepted the consequences.

His chest tightened.

The sharp ring of his phone broke the silence.

Ricardo glanced at the screen, his brows knitting together when he saw the name flashing across it.

Stella.

He hesitated before answering. “Hello.”

“Ricardo,” Stella said smoothly, her voice warm and familiar. “I hope I’m not disturbing you.”

“No,” he replied, straightening. “What’s going on?”

“I’ll be stopping by tomorrow morning,” she said casually. “There are some documents I need to deliver to you personally. I thought it would be quicker that way.”

Ricardo frowned slightly. “You could’ve sent them to the office.”

“I could have,” she agreed, a faint laugh in her tone. “But I wanted to see you. It’ important”

There was a pause.

“Alright,” he said finally. “Come by in the morning.”

“Great,” Stella replied, clearly pleased. “See you tomorrow.”

The call ended, but the unease didn’t.

Ricardo stared at his phone for a moment before setting it down.

That night, sleep came slowly.

The next morning, the atmosphere at breakfast was painfully stiff.

Amelia moved quietly around the dining area, her movements precise and controlled. She placed Ricardo’s coffee beside him without meeting his eyes.

Her face was calm, almost emotionless, as though the confession from the night before had never happened.

The distance between them was unmistakable.

Ricardo took a sip of his coffee, watching her over the rim of the cup. She had built her walls back up—stronger this time. The realization stirred something uncomfortable inside him.

“This is better,” he told himself. “This is how it should be.”

When he finished eating, he stood and reached for his coat. “I’m heading to work.”

Amelia nodded. “Have a good day.”

Her voice was polite. Neutral. Not a single trace of the warmth she once carried.

Ricardo paused, as if he wanted to say something more, but the words refused to come. He turned and left, the sound of the door closing echoing behind him.

Only after he was gone did Amelia finally breathe.

She leaned lightly against the counter, pressing her fingers together to steady herself. Her heart still ached, but she refused to let it show. She had made her choice last night, and now she would live with it.

If loving him meant loving quietly, then she would endure.

Later that morning, she changed her clothes and began preparing to step out.

That was when the doorbell rang.

Mrs. Pat answered it, wiping her hands on her apron. “Good morning.”

Amelia followed behind, stopping a short distance away.

The woman standing at the door was elegant—well-dressed, confident, and unmistakably out of place in the quiet house. Her sharp eyes swept across the room before landing on Amelia.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Stella’s lips curved into a slow smile, though there was no warmth in her eyes. “I’m looking for Ricardo.”

“He’s already left for work,” Mrs. Pat replied.

The air between the two women felt sharp, charged with hostility that needed no words. Amelia could see it clearly now—the disdain, the jealousy, the unspoken challenge in Stella’s eyes.

This woman didn’t see her as Ricardo's wife.

She saw her as an obstacle.

Amelia held her ground, refusing to look away.

And in that silent stare, she understood one thing with chilling certainty—

Stella’s arrival again was only the beginning.

Amelia remembered Stella the moment she saw her.Four and a half years had passed since their last encounter—four and a half long, exhausting years in which Amelia had convinced herself that Stella had vanished from her life completely. It had felt as though Stella had disappeared into thin air, swallowed by time and circumstance. Amelia never asked about her, never searched for her. Some memories were easier left buried.Yet here Stella was again.Alive. Unchanged. Standing right in front of her as if time itself had looped cruelly back on her.Amelia’s steps faltered for a brief second, her heart tightening in her chest. She forced herself to keep walking, her gaze fixed straight ahead. She had somewhere to be—work. She didn’t have the strength, or the courage, to deal with ghosts from her past.“Amelia.”Stella’s voice cut through the air, sharp and familiar. It sent a shiver down Amelia’s spine. She didn’t turn around.“Amelia, can’t you even greet me?” Stella called again, disbel

Dinner was unusually quiet.Amelia sat across from Ricardo at the long dining table, her fingers tightening around her fork as the clink of cutlery echoed in the spacious room. The soft glow of the chandelier reflected off the polished surface, but none of its warmth reached her chest. Her appetite had vanished the moment she sat down.Ricardo noticed it almost immediately. She had barely touched her food, and every few seconds, he felt her gaze flicker toward him—hesitant, lingering, then quickly pulled away as if she’d been caught doing something forbidden. He pretended not to notice at first, focusing on his meal, but the tension thickening the air made it impossible to ignore.“Amelia,” he finally said, setting his fork down. “You’ve been staring at me all evening.”Her head snapped up, eyes wide. “I—I wasn’t.”He raised an eyebrow, unconvinced. “You look like you want to say something. What’s wrong?”The question made her heart pound violently against her ribs. She lowered her ga

Amelia excused herself quietly, fingers tightening around the hem of her dress. No one stopped her. No one asked if she was all right. The silence in the living room felt heavier than any argument, pressing against her chest as she turned and walked toward the staircase. She kept her head high as she climbed, even though her heart was sinking with every step.Behind her, Stella finally found her voice.“Ricardo,” she said, disbelief and anger trembling beneath her calm tone. “Does your grandfather know about this… marriage?”Ricardo’s jaw tightened. He didn’t look at Stella immediately. “Yes,” he replied flatly. “He does.”Stella’s eyes widened. “So this isn’t some lie? This woman—Amelia—is really your wife?”“She is,” Ricardo said, his voice firm now. “Legally.”The word landed like a slap.Stella rose to her feet, her hands clenched into fists. “Then why was I never told? Why did you let me keep coming here, acting like—”“Because it was none of your business,” Ricardo interrupted c
