Kaelen POV

The iron of the execution post bit into my shoulders, but that pain was nothing next to what was sitting in my chest. I'd spent months thinking I knew her, thinking the girl who met me by the creek, who laughed over stale bread under the spruce trees, was mine. Now, frost working through my torn jacket, the truth was simpler and worse: I was a human who'd wandered too close to something with teeth, and I was about to pay the going rate for it.

Around me, the parade ground shook with the rhythm of a few thousand boots hitting frozen earth at once. Their breath rose into the cold like smoke off a single animal.

Thaddeus Blackwood stood at the centre of the stone amphitheatre, scarred and massive, his voice carrying without needing to strain for it.

"Listen well!" he roared. "For generations, Silver Ridge has stood as the last true stronghold of northern blood! We do not bleed for outsiders, and we do not share our soil with human filth! Shifter blood is sovereign and it stays that way!"

The ranks answered him with a roar that shook snow loose from the pines. I kept my head down and let blood drip off my chin rather than give them the satisfaction of watching me shake. My wrists were raw where the chains had rubbed through skin. They'd beaten me, taken my tools, and marched me across the border to make an example of me. None of that was the worst part. The worst part was Zephyrine's face on the balcony when they dragged me out wrapped in Luna silk, already halfway gone into a life that had no room in it for me.

She watched them take you and didn't move, “Something in the back of my mind kept saying. “She kept her crown.”

"Bring the prisoner forward," Thaddeus commanded, lifting a silver-plated broadsword as the crowd split down the middle.

I didn't look up. I braced for the sound of steel, ready for it to be over. Instead, footsteps measured, unhurried crossed the stone.

I forced my head up.

Beside Vivienne on the dais stood a man I didn't recognise. Broad-shouldered under dark pelts, silver-grey eyes that looked more tired than triumphant nothing like the crowd baying below him. Malakai Bellerose. The future Alpha didn't look like he was enjoying this. He held a leather-bound scroll, and his hands weren't entirely steady as he unrolled it.

He stepped to the edge of the dais and looked straight at me. Not mockery. Not satisfied. Just a man standing in a cage someone else had built for him.

"By the old decrees of the northern territories," he said, his voice carrying without Thaddeus's bark behind it "any human who breaches the inner perimeter forfeits his life. Unless"

The whole amphitheatre went quiet enough to hear the wind.

He glanced sideways at Vivienne, who gave him a small, sharp nod, then looked back down at me.

"Unless a binding oath of relinquishment is spoken before the council. If the human renounces every tie, every memory, every claim to the blood he touched, his life is spared, and he's cast out past the southern valleys. He won't come back."

The ranks muttered disgust, mostly, that mercy was even on the table.

I almost laughed. Renounce it? How exactly does a man renounce the one real thing that ever happened to him, even a thing that had, apparently, already let go of him first?

Before I could tell them to just get on with the sword, the gates at the upper terrace groaned, then screamed against their hinges.

Thaddeus spun, sword dropping, already shouting for the guards to hold the line.

"What is the meaning of this?" Vivienne's composure cracked for the first time, stepping forward, eyes wide.

The gates didn't open. They blew outward in a spray of shattered iron and ice.

Through the dust, one figure walked onto the terrace. Bare feet on frozen stone, a torn cloak, hair loose in the wind, and eyes gone the colour of a fire about to catch.

Zephyrine.

My chest seized. She wasn't in silk anymore. Her hair whipped free, and along her throat the raw marks of rejection sickness were plainly visible to anyone close enough to look. She didn't look broken. She looked like something that had decided it had nothing left to lose.

Vivienne went pale. "Zephyrine back to your quarters. You have no place at a tribunal."

"I have every place here." Her voice cut clean through the cold, steady in a way that made the enforcers nearest her go still.

She didn't look at Malakai. She didn't look at the ranks reaching for their steel. Her eyes found me first bound, bleeding, still standing and then moved, slow and final, to her mother.

"Because this trial was never about him." She drew a silver-hilted dagger from under her cloak, and the ground under her bare feet seemed to hum with something low and waiting. "It's about the person who built the whole trap."

Zephyrine povThe creek ran black under the thin moonlight. I found Kaelen where I always did sitting on the flat rock with his back to the current, the hood of his jacket pulled low. He looked up when I stepped out of the trees, and the careful distance he kept in public fell away for half a second. Relief. Hunger. Fear. All of it naked before he shuttered it again.“You’re late,” he said quietly.“Vivienne kept me.” I sat beside him, close enough that our shoulders almost touched. The cold from the stone bled through my jeans. “She knows. Not everything. But enough.”His jaw tightened. He didn’t ask how. He only reached into his pocket and drew out something small wrapped in soft cloth. When he unfolded it, the wooden wolf lay in his palm, finished at last. The grain followed the curve of its spine; the eyes were deep and watchful. A thin leather cord had been threaded through a hole behind the head.“For you,” he said. “So you remember the choice is still ours.”I took it. The wood

  • THE LUNA’S FORBIDDEN ECHO   Chapter 9: The Weight of the Crown

Zephyrine povThe ceremonial gown hung from the wardrobe like something that already owned me. Ivory silk, high collar, the sleeves cut to leave the crescent scar on full display. Vivienne had chosen every detail. The seamstress stood behind me with pins in her mouth, murmuring measurements while I stared at my reflection and tried not to breathe too deeply.“Hold still, Miss,” the woman said. “The waist needs to sit higher. Luna lines should read regal, not soft.”I lifted my arms when she told me to. The fabric whispered against my skin. In the mirror, the scar looked darker than usual, as if the silk had drawn blood to the surface. The pull that lived under it had been restless since breakfast. It coiled and released in slow waves, stronger when I thought of Kaelen, vicious when I tried not to.Vivienne watched from the doorway, arms folded, the silver in her hair catching the late-afternoon light. She had not spoken since the fitting began. That silence was worse than her question

  • THE LUNA’S FORBIDDEN ECHO   Chapter 8: Whispers in the Boreal

Kaelen povThe human logging camp smelled of diesel, wet pine, and fear. I kept to the tree line, hood up, the canvas duffel heavy against my shoulder. Dawn was still an hour off. Mist clung low between the stumps. Every few minutes a generator coughed somewhere deeper in the clearing, and men’s voices drifted out tired, rough, full of the stories they told to keep the dark from feeling so close.I had been at this for three nights. Non-perishables from the supply shed when the night watch was drunk or sleeping. Rope. Waterproof matches. A second canteen. Small things that wouldn’t be missed until the next inventory, and by then we would be gone. The weight of the bag was starting to feel like a promise I wasn’t sure I could keep.A lantern swung near the mess tent. Two loggers sat on overturned crates, passing a thermos. Their words carried farther than they knew.“Saw the tracks again last night. Bigger than any wolf I’ve ever laid eyes on. Claw marks on the trees eight feet up.”“P

  • THE LUNA’S FORBIDDEN ECHO   Chapter 7: The Silver-streaked Line

Zephyrine povI woke to burnt toast and Vivienne’s voice drifting up the stairs. The light through the curtains was thin and grey, the kind that never quite becomes day. My body felt heavy, like it had been running all night even though I’d only climbed back through the window an hour before dawn. Creek water still clung to the insides of my wrists where I’d scrubbed Kaelen’s scent off in the dark.I dressed slowly. The cotton dress Vivienne liked for family breakfasts hung loose on my shoulders. I kept my eyes off the mirror. The crescent scar on my collarbone had ached since I left him, a dull throb matching the beat under my ribs. I pressed my fingers against it once, hard, hoping pain would quiet it. It didn’t.Downstairs, Vivienne sat at the head of the long table. Silver threaded the dark hair she’d pinned back with care. Her smile was the same one she gave the elders soft at the edges, sharp underneath. Eggs and toast waited at my place. Steam still rose from the coffee she’d p

  • THE LUNA’S FORBIDDEN ECHO   Chapter 6: Stolen Hours

Zephyrine Vesper POVThe first time I lied to my mother's face, I was eleven, and it was about a broken teacup. It didn't feel like anything. My heart didn't even move. The lie I told her tonight sat in my chest like a second pulse. “Studying in the west library. Don't wait up.” Four words, and somehow they weighed more than the crown I was supposed to grow into.I found the clearing an hour after moonrise, following the route we'd worn into the frost over the last six months not a real path, nothing a tracker would notice, just a slightly kinder line through the brush where our boots had gone before us, over and over, until the snow learned to expect us. Kaelen was already there, sitting on the flat rock we'd claimed as ours, a thermos between his boots and his collar turned up against the cold."You're" I started, and the word came out wrong, tangled, my mouth catching up a beat late to a night that had already exhausted me before it started. I tried again. "You're early.""You're l
