Zephyrine Vesper POV

The mud in the paddock had frozen against my bare ankles, but I couldn't feel it. My whole world had narrowed to lantern light and the shape pinned against the cart wheel. Kaelen. His head hung low, blood matting his hair, his shoulders working with each ragged breath. Thaddeus stood over him with an iron shackle in one fist.

I was already moving to tear across the yard when a hand clamped over my mouth and dragged me back into the dark under the stable overhang.

I spun, teeth bared, ready to fight whoever had grabbed me and stopped.

Corisande Dupond stood there, hazel eyes wide, one hand still pressed to my lips. She hooked her other arm around my waist and pulled me behind a stack of feed sacks, where the smell of alfalfa covered our scent.

"Have you lost your mind?" Cora whispered, dropping her hand once she was sure I wouldn't bolt. Her chest heaved, and the calm she usually carried into every sickroom was gone. "If Thaddeus sees you out here half-dressed, running at a human captive, your mother won't just lock you up. She'll kill him in front of you to make a point."

"Let go of me," I hissed, panic clawing up my throat. "They're going to kill him, look at him, they've already broken his ribs."

"And if you run out there, you sign both your death warrants." Her grip on my arm didn't loosen. "Keep your voice down. The guard changes in three minutes. Get inside before someone looks over here."

Every instinct told me to fight her off. Then the ache in my chest flared again worse this time, the bond punishing me for standing this close to him without being allowed near him. I gasped and my knees gave out.

Cora caught me and hauled me through the low side door into the infirmary.

The heavy door shut out the wind and the sight of the paddock both. Inside smelled of valerian, antiseptic, and old copper the kind of room where things got fixed quietly and questions didn't follow. She steered me to a cushioned bench in the back dispensary and sat me down.

"Breathe," she said, already reaching for a dark glass vial on the shelf. "Fight your own blood any harder and your heart will give out before the enforcers even lay a hand on you."

"I can't just sit here while they hurt him." I pressed both hands to my chest, the ache tasting like copper at the back of my throat. "My mother knows, Cora. She showed me his axe. She's doing this on purpose."

"I know exactly what your mother wants." Cora poured an amber liquid into a small chalice, her hands not quite steady. "Drink. It won't touch the bond-ache, but it'll keep you upright through tomorrow's council review."

I looked at the liquid wolfsbane and moonflower, unmistakable even by smell. "This isn't infirmary stock. This is restricted."

"Your mother locks a lot of things away. I've had twenty years to learn how to get around her locks." Cora pulled a stool close, and something heavier than concern settled into her face. "You think you're the first wolf in this pack she's tried to break? You think the old laws came from the moon goddess? Every rule here was built by Vivienne Vesper to keep anyone from ever questioning her."

I drank. It burned going down, and the pain in my chest dulled into something colder and more distant not gone, just quieter.

"Why are you helping me?" I asked, setting the chalice down. "If she finds out you're hiding me, giving me restricted herbs she'll ruin you."

"Because I watched her do this exact thing to your sister. Twenty years ago."

The room went silent. My blood stopped moving. I didn't have a sister. Every record I'd ever seen named me Vivienne's only child.

"What are you talking about?" I leaned forward. "I don't have a sister."

"You don't," Cora said quietly, looking at the barred door instead of at me. "Because the night she fell for a human hunter from the southern valleys, your mother put her in these cells, let the rejection sickness run its full course, and handed her to the elders as a traitor when it was done."

Something in my chest dropped away entirely. Every rule I'd grown up under, every cold hand on my shoulder, every warning about stepping out of line it all rearranged itself into something much uglier.

"She engineered it," I said slowly. "Kaelen. She didn't stumble onto us. She led us there."

"She leaves the door open for the people she wants to catch." Cora took my hands, which had gone cold. "She needed something to make the elders look weak and the bloodline look fragile enough that the pack would beg for a stronger hand by the time you ascended. Kaelen wasn't a stray human who wandered too close, Zephyrine. He was placed there. Probably the year you turned sixteen."

The room tilted. The man who'd held me by the creek, the one hour of my life that had felt like mine all of it reshaped itself into a piece on someone else's board. I felt tears rise and refused to let them fall.

Boots hit the hallway stone outside, fast and synchronised, and stopped right at the infirmary door.

Thud. Thud. Thud.

"Open the door, Healer Dupond." Thaddeus's voice came through the wood like a hammer. "Order of the Matriarch. There's a breach in the lower wards, and the hounds say the human had help from inside."

Cora went white. She looked from the door to me, then shoved me toward the supply closet in the corner.

"Get in," she whispered. "If she finds you here, we're both dead by morning."

I backed into the cramped dark and pulled the louvred door shut, leaving it open just enough to see through the slats. The oak door groaned on its hinges behind me and swung open.

Zephyrine povThe creek ran black under the thin moonlight. I found Kaelen where I always did sitting on the flat rock with his back to the current, the hood of his jacket pulled low. He looked up when I stepped out of the trees, and the careful distance he kept in public fell away for half a second. Relief. Hunger. Fear. All of it naked before he shuttered it again.“You’re late,” he said quietly.“Vivienne kept me.” I sat beside him, close enough that our shoulders almost touched. The cold from the stone bled through my jeans. “She knows. Not everything. But enough.”His jaw tightened. He didn’t ask how. He only reached into his pocket and drew out something small wrapped in soft cloth. When he unfolded it, the wooden wolf lay in his palm, finished at last. The grain followed the curve of its spine; the eyes were deep and watchful. A thin leather cord had been threaded through a hole behind the head.“For you,” he said. “So you remember the choice is still ours.”I took it. The wood

  • THE LUNA’S FORBIDDEN ECHO   Chapter 9: The Weight of the Crown

Zephyrine povThe ceremonial gown hung from the wardrobe like something that already owned me. Ivory silk, high collar, the sleeves cut to leave the crescent scar on full display. Vivienne had chosen every detail. The seamstress stood behind me with pins in her mouth, murmuring measurements while I stared at my reflection and tried not to breathe too deeply.“Hold still, Miss,” the woman said. “The waist needs to sit higher. Luna lines should read regal, not soft.”I lifted my arms when she told me to. The fabric whispered against my skin. In the mirror, the scar looked darker than usual, as if the silk had drawn blood to the surface. The pull that lived under it had been restless since breakfast. It coiled and released in slow waves, stronger when I thought of Kaelen, vicious when I tried not to.Vivienne watched from the doorway, arms folded, the silver in her hair catching the late-afternoon light. She had not spoken since the fitting began. That silence was worse than her question

  • THE LUNA’S FORBIDDEN ECHO   Chapter 8: Whispers in the Boreal

Kaelen povThe human logging camp smelled of diesel, wet pine, and fear. I kept to the tree line, hood up, the canvas duffel heavy against my shoulder. Dawn was still an hour off. Mist clung low between the stumps. Every few minutes a generator coughed somewhere deeper in the clearing, and men’s voices drifted out tired, rough, full of the stories they told to keep the dark from feeling so close.I had been at this for three nights. Non-perishables from the supply shed when the night watch was drunk or sleeping. Rope. Waterproof matches. A second canteen. Small things that wouldn’t be missed until the next inventory, and by then we would be gone. The weight of the bag was starting to feel like a promise I wasn’t sure I could keep.A lantern swung near the mess tent. Two loggers sat on overturned crates, passing a thermos. Their words carried farther than they knew.“Saw the tracks again last night. Bigger than any wolf I’ve ever laid eyes on. Claw marks on the trees eight feet up.”“P

  • THE LUNA’S FORBIDDEN ECHO   Chapter 7: The Silver-streaked Line

Zephyrine povI woke to burnt toast and Vivienne’s voice drifting up the stairs. The light through the curtains was thin and grey, the kind that never quite becomes day. My body felt heavy, like it had been running all night even though I’d only climbed back through the window an hour before dawn. Creek water still clung to the insides of my wrists where I’d scrubbed Kaelen’s scent off in the dark.I dressed slowly. The cotton dress Vivienne liked for family breakfasts hung loose on my shoulders. I kept my eyes off the mirror. The crescent scar on my collarbone had ached since I left him, a dull throb matching the beat under my ribs. I pressed my fingers against it once, hard, hoping pain would quiet it. It didn’t.Downstairs, Vivienne sat at the head of the long table. Silver threaded the dark hair she’d pinned back with care. Her smile was the same one she gave the elders soft at the edges, sharp underneath. Eggs and toast waited at my place. Steam still rose from the coffee she’d p

  • THE LUNA’S FORBIDDEN ECHO   Chapter 6: Stolen Hours

Zephyrine Vesper POVThe first time I lied to my mother's face, I was eleven, and it was about a broken teacup. It didn't feel like anything. My heart didn't even move. The lie I told her tonight sat in my chest like a second pulse. “Studying in the west library. Don't wait up.” Four words, and somehow they weighed more than the crown I was supposed to grow into.I found the clearing an hour after moonrise, following the route we'd worn into the frost over the last six months not a real path, nothing a tracker would notice, just a slightly kinder line through the brush where our boots had gone before us, over and over, until the snow learned to expect us. Kaelen was already there, sitting on the flat rock we'd claimed as ours, a thermos between his boots and his collar turned up against the cold."You're" I started, and the word came out wrong, tangled, my mouth catching up a beat late to a night that had already exhausted me before it started. I tried again. "You're early.""You're l

  • THE LUNA’S FORBIDDEN ECHO   Chapter 5: Iron and Protocol

Kaelen POVThe iron of the execution post bit into my shoulders, but that pain was nothing next to what was sitting in my chest. I'd spent months thinking I knew her, thinking the girl who met me by the creek, who laughed over stale bread under the spruce trees, was mine. Now, frost working through my torn jacket, the truth was simpler and worse: I was a human who'd wandered too close to something with teeth, and I was about to pay the going rate for it.Around me, the parade ground shook with the rhythm of a few thousand boots hitting frozen earth at once. Their breath rose into the cold like smoke off a single animal.Thaddeus Blackwood stood at the centre of the stone amphitheatre, scarred and massive, his voice carrying without needing to strain for it."Listen well!" he roared. "For generations, Silver Ridge has stood as the last true stronghold of northern blood! We do not bleed for outsiders, and we do not share our soil with human filth! Shifter blood is sovereign and it stays
